What makes you think I or anyone else wants to know where real IMAX screens are in "my town"? My question about a list of real screens is for out of my town because I do know the screens in my town.

I thought there was a link posted a few months ago that showed if it was 70mm or Does anyone have that link? There is only one IMAX in my area and it is digital only. I am going to have to take a trip somewhere to see it.

Not necessarily. Many theaters that were once real 1570 IMAX are converting to digital IMAX, so the only way to know for sure is to do some research. Your best bet is to contact the theater(s) directly. That's what I've done in the past.

It was a legitimate IMAX theater from 2003 - 2011. ;)

They switched to digital sometime before the release of Super 8.

aren't real IMAX screens supposed to curve over you somewhat?

haven't been to the Ronnies or The Mills IMAX screens here in St. Louis but the one at Chesterfield mall is just really tall and kind of closer up to you, doesn't surround you or anything, definitely has the best sound I've heard in a theater here though

I thought Imax screens were supposed to curve as well.

I went to see Prometheus Imax in 3D and it was a pretty disappointing experience. The screen looked normal sized to me.

You guys might be thinking of Omnimax, which projects onto the inside of a dome.

What you're thinking of is an IMAX Dome (sometimes known as Omnimax). A traditional IMAX screen is bowed toward the center (away from the audience) but does not bend out over the audience.

Are there any downsides to the IMAX dome screens? I saw TDK at the Franklin Institute which has the dome theater, and it was very impressive. I was under the impression that it was 70mm and on par with the highest quality of other IMAX theaters.

It is 70mm, and the same quality as IMAX. The only difference is that the image is slightly warped to compensate for the curvature of the dome (when it's projected it should look normal to the human eye). Once I had to run test footage from an Omnimax in my standard IMAX theater, it looked bizarre.

I was thinking of taking a ride to Franklin for this movie but have heard the seats are very uncomfortable and need to be replaced? My other option is driving to Pittsburgh.

Granted, it was four years ago, but I don't remember the seats being uncomfortable. However, I would definitely say that there are bad seats in the house. We got there late and were the last people seated, so we were in the far front corner, making it a bit disorienting for us with a screen of such magnitude. I think the key is to sit near the center of the theater.


Thank you, I thought this was the case, but wasn't sure. It does look fine when watching the movie, and really is an incredibly immersive experience. When Batman jumps off of the building in China and the camera follows him, I felt like I was falling. The truck flip was also amazing, it was so disappointing to watch that scene in a regular movie theater.

all three Smithsonian IMAX (15/70) screens are showing this - WHOAH!!!

(I can't stand OmniMax screens, the one Syracuse New York made me kind of ill watching 'Polar Express' as such).

do you wanna just make a thread and educate us on IMAX/ Cuz it's something I'd like to know more of. Specifically the projection of it etc. Of course..the film itself is very neat as well. And since you work w/ this stuff. You can translate it in DVDtalk language.

Midnight IMAX ticket at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum: Acquired. Used to go there for field trips from around 1991-2001, and been there a lot for other things, so seeing this movie there should add to the memories.

The dome annoys the hell out of me. Back in Tallahassee that was the only IMAX they had when I was there, at an education center. They'd get movies a few months late and project it on the dome which was nearly impossible to watch.

usually it's the Chantilly Virginia IMAX screens that gets all the Hollywood stuff, the mere fact that the Smithsonian got to book all three screens to feature 'Dark Knight Rises' all at the same time is literally unreal. (Now I have to renew my Smithsonian membership to get the reduced IMAX tix price.)
