Best explosion

So we all know that one of the best scenes of explosions is the Naktomi building in Die Hard. List some more....

Giles 08-18-08 01:16 PM

wasn't that model work? the hospital explosion in 'Dark Knight' was pretty impressive since it all was in-camera.

bridge explosion - 'The Long Kiss Goodnight' [on the DTS laserdisc, the explosion rips like a mutha]

NoirFan 08-18-08 01:24 PM

The bridge explosions in The Wild Bunch and Bridge on the River Kwai.

toddly6666 08-18-08 01:32 PM

2-Dimensional Freeze-frame explosions in AVALON.

islandclaws 08-18-08 03:00 PM

The nuclear blast from T2 was pretty sweet.

flagstone 08-18-08 03:32 PM

The blast when the Ring was cut off Sauron's hand in The Fellowship Of The Ring.

FinkPish 08-18-08 03:36 PM

The ship explosion at the end of Blown Away. That thing was so massive, it blew out 8,000 windows in Boston.

Mondo Kane 08-18-08 03:37 PM

Bridge blast in Duck You Sucker.

Clint said that Leone used "Hundreds of pounds" of dynamite to blow up the bridge in Good/Bad/Ugly. Well, I'm guessing that a THOUSAND pounds of dynamte was used to blow up the bridge in DYS. The schockwave that's caught on camera is proof of that.

Shannon Nutt 08-18-08 03:38 PM

Yes, we should eliminate any CGI or model work from this thread...

The building explosion at the opening of Lethal Weapon 3 is pretty sweet.

But the bridge in BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI has to take the cake - it's a classic.

Apone 08-18-08 03:40 PM

Apocalypse Now - The opening and air cavalry raid.
Band of Brothers - Bastogne and Breaking Point; excellent studio production (set, CGI and etc)
Casino - Cool subjective shot of being inside an explosion.
Children of Men - The Coffee shop.
Clear and Present Danger - Black operation + jungle + guns + explosions = awesome.
Cold Mountain - I can't remember how impressive it was but it made enough impression on me.
Come and See - Spectacular!
Flags of Our Fathers - The bombarment combined by navy and air force.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail - Tim. It's simple but fun and effective.
Munich - The hotel bombing; aftermath was the best part.
Rambo - Best explosions.
The Thin Red Line - The first bombarment (full-bit DTS).
We Were Soldiers - There's a lot.

Even though I knew it was coming it was still made me jump. The audio dynamics are great!

Saving Private Ryan - The tank to building hit near the end of the film that knocks Hanks off his feet. Wows me every time I see it.

But just about nothing beats the real deal as in Trinity and Beyond: The Atomic Bomb Movie. The testing stages are staggering.

Winter Kills had similarly flat, ridiculously fake looking explosions.

devilshalo 08-18-08 04:21 PM

I do enjoy me some Quick and the Dead explosions of the town.

Funniest would be both of the Lethal Weapon 3 buildings.

Bluelitespecial 08-18-08 04:35 PM

My all time favorite would have to be Jabba's Barge in Return of the Jedi.

Mr. Salty 08-18-08 06:53 PM

I like the destruction of Kurtz's compound in "Apocalypse Now," as well as the destruction of the refinery in "The Road Warrior."

Zen Peckinpah 08-18-08 08:51 PM

Die Hard 2

[/thread]

Ranger 08-18-08 09:24 PM

I know I have many favorites.

To name a few:
- U-571 with the destroyer dropping in bombs on the sub.
- M-I:3, where the drone attacks the bridge.

RTisBetter 08-18-08 09:47 PM

Wow, you people fail.

Which version is that? Theatrical, special edition or DVD edition?

Jam Master Jay 08-18-08 09:57 PM

ya know I thought the one at the beginning of Swordfish was pretty cool!

Cellar Door 08-18-08 10:22 PM

The explosion of Parliament at the end of V for Vendetta.

Brack 08-18-08 10:35 PM

there are plenty, but my favorite explosion shot:
Bad Boys (1995) - when the hangar explodes, and the car is coming into the foreground, looks absolutely awesome.

UAIOE 08-19-08 02:17 AM

I'm partial to the explosion on the cruise ship in "The Fifth Element".

The funniest would have to be Stewie and Brian blowing up that house in "Family Guy".

orderandlaw 08-19-08 09:21 AM

How about the end of 'Big Trouble in Little China' where one of the trio of bad dudes head explodes, and it looks like they just tossed a bunch of cabbage or lettuce to show the 'innards' of his head.

Doughboy 08-19-08 01:14 PM

This Is Spinal Tap - The drummer at the end of the movie.

RichC2 08-19-08 01:15 PM

The one from ID4 (city explosion) was cool back in the day, it hasn't aged well.

My vote goes to the one in my pants during The Dark Knight. ;)

Giantrobo 08-19-08 01:24 PM

Cum Blasters 4

Chapter 4, 00:09:34 in.

Randy Miller III 08-19-08 01:30 PM

I win.

NIMH Rat 08-19-08 01:33 PM

John Cassavetes at the end of The Fury.

Multiple angles, repeated action, slow motion, John Williams going apeshit.....

mattressman 08-19-08 01:34 PM

Street Trash!

Giles 08-19-08 01:49 PM

the funny thing about the Scanner's head explosion was that it was done very crudely - with a shotgun... hey go with the flow. The scene in uncut form then had the headless victim slumping to the table with all this blood flowing out of its neck.

likewise, the exploding head in Raiders of the Lost Ark originally didn't have the fire covering up all the grue and gore, the addition was to appease the MPAA and not have the film go out with a R-rating.

I've never seen it, since it was censored for American audiences, but the head decapitation with a shotgun of Willem Dafoe's character in WILD AT HEART was very gory in the uncut international print of the film.

Solid Snake 08-19-08 04:51 PM

I can think of is Police Story 3: Supercop. Duck, You Sucker was already brought up as well as The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly

Robert 08-19-08 05:02 PM

<b>Speed</b> - Bus collides with jumbo jet
<b>Stealth</b> -Refueling blimp explosion and Hangar explosion

what was that Kevin Costner movie where the guy's head blew up in a dream sequence - now THAT scene was jarring.

The Upside of Anger. Given the context in which it occured, that was probably one of the most unexpected moments I've ever seen in a film.

Detroit Rock City when the chick is on the crapper.

Or Vanishing Point at the end.

Wolf359 08-21-08 11:19 PM

I've always loved the bridge explosion from True Lies.
