You don't find the satirical overuse of "multiple cameras" during an explosion to be funny?

It reminded me watching action movies as a kid and them always using at least three cameras to film an explosion.

See the clip I posted in spoiler tags. It is clearly being referenced by that Family Guy clip.

NoirFan 08-26-08 06:30 PM

The boat explosion in Parallax View. The scene itself is directed with such an opaque, minimalist style that the explosion itself is quite startling, as it seems to come out of nowhere.

I'm always partial to the exploding house in Friday the 13th part VII: The New Blood.

I dunno, it isn't edited fast enough (the clip you posted).

I still think its an "80's-90's action movie multiple camera explosion" homage. If it was supposed to reference that particular clip there would have been lingering shots of the house & explosion and none of the fast editing between cameras.

I also like the explosion at the end of "Police Story 2".

Regardless, that clip (from the early '70s) may very well be the archetypal explosion of that nature. Other intense explosions that pre-date it, such as White Heat (1949) or Kiss Me Deadly (1955) certainly did not have that type of cubist multi-angle abstraction that Antonioni crafted (please note I'm referencing the shots before the super slo-mo kicks in).

It's no surprise that particular style would be consumed and adapted and streamlined for more commercial filmmaking ventures. It is quite exhilarating, particularly seeing it in a theater.

UAIOE 08-27-08 03:00 PM

Honestly, I've always taken the use of multiple cameras to catch an explosion to be less "artistic" and more "we have one take to film this, get every camera on it".

Giles 08-27-08 03:05 PM

the explosion during the finale of Beaufort seems like all the time, money and effort was put into soley that scene, everything else about the movie was terribly amatuerish and weak.

No doubt.

But the genesis of that style appears in a quintessential "art-house" film.

I've always liked the explosion at the beginning of Another Stakeout. Good choices on the angles and the closeness of the stuntguys to the house make it a well done explosion.
i've also like that slo-mo explosion at the end of Quntum of Solace when he is running pass the glass. A very cool shot and I believe they used a new type of camera but hopefully they will explain that on the new BD release.

Re: Best explosion

Explosions looked perfect in "Stealth". I didn't really like the movie. But those explosions were the movie's standout point. Not sure if I've ever seen better pyro in a movie. Not many people saw it, so the stunts don't really get the praise they deserve.

The Long Kiss Goodnight has some really fun pyrotechnics (and all around stunts). Though a little out there, making it harder to get totally immersed in again and again.

I also love when they actually get to film the demolition of something. The hospital in The Dark Knight. That mansion in Bad Boys II. The office building in Terminator 2. I'm always in awe when people can film something big, in a fictional story, without using much 'trickery'. The Fall did that, on a different level.

The 2nd Death Star in Return of the Jedi. It's my favorite action scene of all time. Also I'm kind of a sucker for the ludicrous jumping-from-the-helicopter explosion in Mission Impossible. It's so over the top, it's awesome.

Re: Best explosion

there is a HK action flick that I'm completely going senior on, but the finale has a house explosion that not only decimates the entire first floor and half the patio, but also lights around 8 stunt men on fire - it's both horrific and amazing at the same time, it's in slow-mo and you know that the stunt men just have to jump into the adjacent swimming pool to extinguish themselves (but they don't in how the scene plays out)

I seriously lost it at work while watching this. My co-workers never heard me laugh like that before - they thought I went mental. It didn't help that it took almost 10 minutes to regain my composure. Just watched it again at home and lost it again.

Thanks for posting this. Made my day.

The railroad car explosion in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Capped by Redford's line: "Think ya used enough dynamite there, Butch?"

A Hanna-Barbera TV cartoon: Punkin' Puss & Mushmouse in "Legend of Bat Mousterson".

Punkin' holds tiny Mousterson in his hand. Mousterson pulls out an even tinier derringer. Punkin' Puss laughs at the puny pistol. Mousterson pulls the trigger ... BLAM! Explosion! and when the smoke clears, not only is Punkin' covered with the usual gunpowder burns, the entire shack they were in has been leveled!

I'm partial to full-scale, practical explosions whenever possible (and they seem so rare anymore), but modeds and CG have their place. A few faves of various varieties:

Exploding gas station in UNIVERSAL SOLDIER
Exploding gas station in 1941
Exploding gas station in THE HITCHER
Exploding gas station in THE MARINE
Exploding gas station in BEST OF THE BEST 2
Exploding gas station in TERMINATOR SALVATION
Exploding gas station in ELVIRA
Exploding villain (Dom Magwili) in FIFTY/FIFTY
(seen here at 3:15: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2phKzblesY)
Exploding pirate ship (model) in CUTTHROAT ISLAND
Exploding department store in DIE HARD 3
Exploding factory/hanger in ACES: IRON EAGLE 3
(seen here at 1:17:15 http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...2585427577387#)

The aforementioned house explosion from ANOTHER STAKEOUT is a real corker, and can be seen in this compilation, one of several compiled at YouTube (More here:http://www.youtube.com/results?searc...xplosions&aq=f):

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/mNuEJjLgjjU&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/mNuEJjLgjjU&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
