Sounds like a good idea for an animated tv show.

The fact that this is rated R indicates that they are at least trying...not that it means anything.

If that clip is indicative of the entire film, I've gotta say it looks like it'll be a fun, gory watch, if nothing else.

Re: New Conan movie...a "darker approach"

sooo I guess Jason Mamoa is writing the sequel....

It will mostly be… It’s character-adapted, because I really want to get into more of the mythical creatures, you know? [...] We wanted to go there [in the first one], but having Clash of the Titans, and coming out against that, we wanted to put the budget into some other things. [...] I don’t want to give anything away, but we already have our Conan, really it’s about the villain, what that villain is going to extract from Conan, and where as an actor I want to go with Conan. [...] So, I think we have a good lock on it. Also, I feel it’s beautiful… How many actors get to go in there and go, “I’m part of the writing process?” and care that much about the character, because he is a fan himself? It’s great. You know some people go like, “It’s great, I’m going to be in my trailer.” I want to @#$%ing make a great Conan movie.

If it makes money, then he can talk about playing the Cimmerian again. I think there's always room for more, but there has to be a substantial audience to come up with a feature and not something made for SyFy.

I'm not sure Momoa is the best person to be going to for ideas. For example, he thinks for Game of Thrones:

Spoiler:
That his character could/should return for Season 2.

Given how shitty and pointless that part of the storyline became in subsequent books, I agree with him.

I'll admit, that clip makes it look rentable.

yeah...I somehow missed update w/ the clip. Rentable? Sure...predictable clip? Yes. Depending on what we get in terms of reviews...I MIGHT see this. Otherwise...I'm not enthusiastic for it.

I don't think anyone is looking forward to this. It definitely does not look worth a theatrical viewing. But I might rent it on a lazy sunday.

This will be the last movie of the summer for me, and I have a free ticket, so why not. Here's a good interview with Momoa, where he talks about breaking his nose on purpose for the film

^ Bah! It could be pure shit on screen with horrid reviews and, as long as it gets an amazing trailer, you know you'll be in the theater opening night (with a raging hardon)!

If it was The Expendables...maybe...not so much for this.

on topic:
I dunno..I don't mind they're doing a Conan flick. That's fine. I just don't like the look of it. It just looks too exotic to the point where it's boring...does that make sense? LIke they're trying too hard maybe? I'm open to it if it's at least good..but otherwise..I've no interest in this besides wanting to see wtf Rose McGowan looks like w/ all that shit on head in this one. She looks crazy from what bits the trailer showed.

Kinda like they're trying to throw everything but the kitchen sink in regards to crazy stuff?

It looked kinda cool that new clip, but the crazy visuals I saw in 300 still haven't been topped so this is kind of a letdown. I do like the that they got Ron Perelman as Conan's father.

Howard was influenced by Coopers Leatherstocking tales

Have you read the stories? The Hyborian Age was jam-packed with strange stuff. Just last night a friend and I were saying how funny it would be if they made the new Conan say "What the fuck?" and "This is some crazy shit!" whenever something weird happens, because it happens all the time in the stories. Some of them get downright Lovecraftian at times.

I'm sure you know this, but that's not a coincidence.

I have a collection of the stories by Howard and can agree. His material was a lot more sword and sorcery based and bordered on sci-fi at times. In fact, Masters of the Universe (the toyline) was VERY much in tone with his material, moreso than the Milius movie.

If Momoa does indeed write the script for the second one, if a second happens, then I think it will be worth seeing for the train wreck value.

Yes, I do know of Howard's friendship with Lovecraft. But it's still surprising to have Conan stumble upon a quivering mass of un-humanity that makes him shiver with an unnameable horror.

Early reviews seem to indicate that this doesn't suck. I think I'll go check it out.

Re: New Conan movie...a "darker approach"

38% rotten. I like this quote from Roger Ebert: "A brutal, crude, witless high-tech CGI contrivance, in which no artificial technique has been overlooked, including 3-D."
