I wouldn't have thought about Joseph Gordon Levitt, but I do think he could do a really job in the role. He certainly would look the part.

10 Things I Hate About You was on the other day (starring both Joseph Gordon Levitt and Heath Ledger), JGL doesn't have as, and I realize its odd sounding, as menacing a face as Ledger but I think he could do the Joker if it were in a smaller role just fine (at Ark.)
Everytime I saw Ledger pop up in the movie I kept thinking of the joker, doesn't help that he wears a similar suit with a similar hair style in a few parts.

Though I did avoid Stop-Loss.

What, like be blames himself for Harvey... Joker's gotten inside his head and seeing himself under the face paint is Bats psychological manifestation of his fear that he could easily cross the line and become what he fights against? That's a little meta for a "comic book" movie, and it makes Batman a little more damaged than I think Warner Brothers would like (although it is a cool concept to explore, and I'm not necessarily against it, those negative comments I make are, unfortunately, the mindset of a lot of studio execs, I fear).

EDIT: Damn you, Scott. You dragged me back into a thread I had sworn off!

VINCENT PEREZ
Perez even looks and sounds like Ledger. It would also be a nice comeback for this respectable actor that tried to make it big in Hollywood after starring in The Crow 2.
They are look-a-likes!

I could actually really see that working but wouldnt it be weird to yet again star in a sequel as (well pretty much in the Crows case) the same character after the original portrayer died before the film was released.

Chris,
I didn't think of that - that's funny! I would certainly like to see if Perez can pull it off because he's never really had a bizarre acting role as the character of the Joker. I probably would like to see him try to copy Ledger than try to do something different with the Joker character...getting rid of his French accent may be a challenge, because I'm not sure if i've seen him in a movie where he speaks in a neutral voice...
Speaking of voices, I look foward to The Dark Knight DVD to hear how the Spanish/French dubs are when they do The Joker...

I just think Day-Lewis is the only one that can live up to Ledger's performance in it. Also it wouldn't be slap to Ledger's work. It'd be a best friend finishing what his loving friend was not allowed to. It'd be honoring Ledger's portrayal. Though I do think Day-Lewis would make it a bit different as so to not imitate Ledger, but more of a spiritual extension of the character. All theoretical but it just sounds right knowing Day-Lewis' work and the love he has for his friend.

Honestly, as someone who was not as blown away by his performance as everyone else but still enjoyed it quite a bit, if you shot it from behind and in the dark, you can just get someone to do the voice, and I'm sure someone can do a pretty great impression of the voice, and it will work for a scene or two.

Why couldn't it?

They could always go The Killing Joke route. Batman comes in for an interrogation and sees its just some guy in make up, and the real Joker has escaped. It would show hes still crafty and dangerous, somewhere 'out there'

Yeah, but the next film is 3 years away... it's too soon NOW because it's only been a month.
I think the Joker could make an appearance in the next film and be okay.
