Get rid of Kosinski and the writers, especially Kosinski.
As rancid as the script was, a decent director could have probably churned out a better movie with that same script.

I actually enjoyed this movie, while watching it, because I went in expecting it to suck. But the visuals were pretty awesome and the score is really fantastic. It wasn't until later that I started realizing that there were all of about 4 characters in the whole movie and story-wise it felt more like a convoluted chamber piece than a visionary epic.

Surprised to see so many people who apparently 'hated' the movie even coming back to this thread.

I thought this was a good flick. Took the wife for my second viewing and she enjoyed it
For those talking about the visuals, Speed Racer blows this away. I still don't get the hate on that one.

I'll probably be the last one here to see this movie. I saw it last night in IMAX 3D. Man, the movie was very good and the IMAX 3D was incredible--completely immersive. I like regular 3D but this movie is much more in IMAX. Price in this city is ridiculous though at $18. Even with movie cash, I had to fork another $6. I think it was worth all the hype. I saw the original TRON (which I loved) in a movie theater. There were about the same handful of people in the audience at a 7PM showing.
I'd love to check out the DVD/blu for the bonus features. Hope to get both TRON and Legacy in Blu. I still have the Beta version of TRON somewhere.
Maybe with a second viewing I'll better understand the whole ISO business and what Olivia's character was.

I saw it over the weekend in "regular 3D" and I enjoyed it. The story was interesting and the visuals were good.
The ISO's are a Lifeforms that spontaneously sprung up while Clu, Flynn, and Tron were developing that world. She was "the last" of the ISO's who was saved by Flynn while Clu was killing them all.

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!
I finally watched this last night.
For contexts sake, I was 11 years old and a budding young computer geek/programmer/nerd when the original came out, and wild horses could not have kept me away from seeing it. And I *LOVED* it. When it was re-released in the fall of 82, I saw it again. When it came to the Disney Channel the following spring of 83, I taped it and couldn't stop watching it.
As a movie, I don't know how it holds up but I still love it. The look, the feel, the imagination, the entire world just worked for me. Everything about it, I loved, Even the bits that made no sense whatsoever.
TRON: Legacy is kind of a huge piece of shit. It is visually resplendent, no question. It looks beautiful from start to finish. And yet, it doesn't quite engage me as the vector graphic, low-res Grid of 1982. Perhaps the obvious artifice of the original film lends it an air of wonder that the more refined, "realistic" visuals of 2010 can't replicate. Anyway, Daft Punk's score holds up beautifully, easily as striking as Wendy Carlos's work from 1982.
And Olivia Wilde makes me all sorts of funny in the pants.
Too bad the story is such a lost opportunity. The movie starts out pretty well. In fact, the entire First Act is pretty good, as far as big budget action spectacles go. The male lead -- whose name eludes me and I'm too lazy to look it up -- has the dramatic range of a wet mop. Compared to Jeff Bridges's performance in 1982, he's lifeless and milquetoast. Generic Brooding Kid with Daddy Issues 101. Too bad that once the story moves into Act II, it doesn't even GRIND to a halt, it SLAMS into a granite wall and lies mangled and lifeless for a good hour or so. By the time we get to the final Act and the requisite slam-bang action finale, there's no interest. Character, conflict, pacing, flow, it's all a mess.
The ending doesn't even feel like an ending; nothing feels accomplished, there's no sense of growth or resolution, there's just a convenient finish line that follows 1.5 hours of little more than dramatic intertia. There's some fine action pieces, and it's all fine and good, but it means nothing overall. Like watching someone playing a video game. Looks great, sounds great, at times thrilling but often dull and overall completely unengaging.
