Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

Star Wars does a much better job of setting up the rules of the world (without draining the second act of all momentum) and tying things up in a satisfactory conclusion than Tron. Could you nitpick Star Wars? Probably. Do you need to nitpick Legacy to see its flaws? Nope.

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

Well, I dunno. When you're watching it over and over I'm sure you'll be able to nitpick it a lot easier.

For me, the three times I watched it, I didn't really go into questioning what the point of an ISO was. Much like how when I saw star wars, I took it at face value that "they were different and special". Much the same that I didn't have to ask what difference Sam as a user was to the programs.

It played in the same flow as the first. And for that defense of "the first one sucked so this one sucking is okay.", it's hardly that. I liked the first one and this was just as basic as that while also planting seeds for what could be a fulfilling sequel.

Considering the sound track has sold so much, and it was projected to do only 30 million or so and beat that, I have hope. Besides, Disney must really be happy to have a licensed franchise injected with life.

What ever happened to people accepting the fact there are great movies, good movies, average movies, and bad movies?

TRON LEGACY is an above average to good movie; no need to tear it apart like Fritz Lang's METROPOLIS.

Oh wait, this is the Internet.

I thought it was a bad movie with great visuals. Ctrl/alt/delete

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

Very cool, wonder if those sources are correct; there already was news a while ago that the writers were being brought back for a sequel treatment but it's just a question of the gross for a greenlight.

Question about the movie though:
Spoiler:
I thought the Flynn/CLU re-integration that Wilde was talking about "could" destroy them both, not that it would. Is that correct?

As far as picking apart the movie, I think you can thoroughly enjoy the movie and point out the flaws. There's nothing wrong in wanting things to be better than they are.

Well, the fact that they resurrected a 28 year old property and made it a viable merchandise machine for the company could lead to the potential sequel in itself.

Actually, I had no problem with the ISO's, other than the fact that they were unnecessary. I think if the only problem had been the ISO's, the movie would have been great.

Not sure what that site is talking about Bridge's demand. The dude (zing!) was beyond hyped to reprise the role of Flynn when they talked to him about Legacy. So I would say that a third film without Jeff Bridges would be a tragedy.

Let's be honest, he's one of the highlights of the film and I'm sure there was to that boom.

I'm thinking they meant Bridges is in high demand, but I agree, he was instrumental in getting the thing off the ground by participating in the proof of concept film a few years back. I'm sure if they wanted to do a third, he'd find time in his schedule to make it work.

Thanks for that advice DT. "Tron: Legacy" didn't "physically" hurt me. Sorry, I didn't know that this thread was just to fawn over the movie. Aren't most discussions here supposed to be pro and con? Not everyone is going to see eye to eye.

I don't know why I have to explain this, but there is a fundamental difference between the in-depth discussion of pros versus cons and you posting "Oh Dear God, no!" in response to the announcement that a sequel might be forthcoming. Notice how I didn't single everyone out who had something negative to say? There are only three posters in this thread who keep coming back to post that the movie is "shit" without adding anything further to the discussion.

And I don't know why I have to justify any of my posts here Dragon Tattoo. I've already explained why I didn't like this movie. And it wasn't just a "the movie is shit" hit and run comment. So if I hear of a sequel, I'm free to post any way I like. Just like your smug "Well, enjoy your pirates sequels then" to someone in another thread who said he didn't like "Tron".

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

I believe the pirates movie comment was directed towards me. But you know, there will always be rude people in life and on the internet. The difference is that if it's on the internet I have a much harder time giving a shit.

As for Tron, I'm rewatching the original right now, and it's really light years beyond Legacy. What's the difference? I care about these characters. And the world, despite the archaic effects, feels a lot more defined.

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

The first few minutes of Tron establish the connection between the real world. Bridges is attempting to hack into the system and find Space Paranoids by using the CLU command; inside the Grid, the CLU program has to fight its way through the defenses set up by the MCP. We see it again when Tron connects in the uplink and receives programming from his guy. Programs that have not been corrupted by the MCP believe in the users (see RAM) whereas others have brainwashed by the MCP (see ending - which looks like Blade ripped that off)

Now, there is a bunch of stuff in Tron that doesn't jive with that stuff either. What was the point of the hookers/girls? I am not sure, but at least it was interesting eye candy. Maybe created by the MCP to lure programs away. Who knows.

The question in Tron Legacy is what these programs are doing. It is a closed universe created by Bridges with programs running around. What are they supposed to be doing? In that sense, Tron actually makes a lot more sense than Tron Legacy and makes Tron more relevant, IMHO.

I sort of a agree. The original Tron was essentially about the communication between systems via the internet, which existed at the time but was only used by the military and universities. A facility like the Lawrence Livermore Lab where the film was shot would have most certainly been using the internet, and the filmmakers were aware of it. Tron was ahead of its time in depicting the internet (so much so that its audience knew nothing about it and was probably alienated a bit). The film was very ahead of its time. Legacy's decision to make it a closed system was peculiar. Perhaps their inspiration was based more on some next generation concept I'm not aware of. Large closed mainframes that construct nano-bots or something? I don't know.

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

Other things Tron has going for it: A better bad guy, a totalitarian system inside the computer that's easy to understand, no flashbacks, the unbridled enthusiasm of Bridges, and a more palpable threat from the MCP (because the idea that a computer program might take over our electronic infrastructure is vivid, whereas programs breaking free of a computer feels kind of silly).

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

I hope there's a sequel; while I thought Legacy was mediocre, the universe lends itself well to future stories, hopefully ones better then Legacy's. The ones speculated on in the article seem pretty interesting to me.

speaking of Pirates 4 ( ) I thought the 3D trailer before Tron Legacy had a ton of better 3D effects crammed into all of it's 2 minutes and 30 seconds, than Tron did (and that feature was shot with 4K cameras)

Re: Tron 2 Announced at SDCC!!

Tron is not at the top of the heap for 3D, I agree. I wasn't crazy about the sword sticking out of the door in the Pirates trailer, but some of the wide open vista shots looked fantastic.
