One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest wasn't on my radar for the top 10, that is for sure. Great movie, not top 10 movie.

12 Angry Men? I am so very surprised at this is a top 10 movie on IMDB.

Still, aside from the 2 Godfathers and Casablanca, none of them belong on the top 10 of all time.

I voted for Pulp Fiction. I finally saw it, and like most Tarantino movies, it sucks.

And move Shawshank closer to the bottom. Maybe replace it with Goodfellas.

I love pretty much all of those films (even if none would make my own top ten) - except for "Pulp Fiction". So I'd get rid of that, and replace it with "Vertigo", my all-time favorite film.

Remove TDK from the top 250. Hype kills.

Are you talking about Hype Williams, the director of the 1998 film "Belly"? If so, that's a pretty serious accusation.

12 Angry Men. Loved the play and the movie was great too. But Lumet has done much better work than that.

There's not much to discuss. It's simply that I think there are at least ten movies better than any of the ones on that list. Now I certainly think Casablanca and the first two Godfather movies are absolutely fantastic, and if anyone had them on a list of the top films of all time I wouldn't quibble with it, but for me they would rank lower on the list.

What I was trying to subtly ask for is your top ten. Others have been giving the replacements for the ones they are taking out of the top ten.

Oh, so you want a list? Fine.
  1. Rules of the Game
  2. Werckmeister Harmonies
  3. Paris, Texas
  4. Au Hasard Balthazar
  5. Chungking Express
  6. Sunrise
  7. My Life To Live
  8. Modern Times
  9. Persona
  10. The Double Life of Veronique

Will that work?

You know, I always enjoyed Persona but could never figure out it was so highly regarded.

Is that Renoir's The Rules of the Game or was there another one I'm missing?

Works for me! Four of those would be in my top ten, and you could certainly make arguments for the other six.

1. Citizen Kane
2. Nashville
3. Rules of the Game
4. Godfather Part II
5. Sunrise
6. L'Atalante
7. Nights of Cabiria
8. Sunset Blvd
9. Au Hasard Balthazar
10. Werckmeister Harmonies

Thanks to both of you "fans" for the lists.

My top ten is in a major state of flux. Until recently, I had little exposure to anything other than mainstream hollywood stuff. I always enjoyed "the classics" or foreign films or "arthouse" stuff the few times I ventured in those directions, and have been building a collection of those types of films, but haven't been watching many of them until recently.

Now I am rapidly expanding my horizons, and finding some great films. If I keep my current pace, my top ten will soon be composed of films that I don't even recognize right now. I have only seen 2 of the 16 films in your lists, although I have recently purchased several of them.

Reading over the poll results (so far) and some of the comments, I have to say that I am duly impressed. There are some genuinely discerning folks posting here on DVD Talk. I thought for sure this thread would be overwhelmed by fan boys screaming "how dare anyone question the greatness of ______."*

* Fill in the blank with Shawshank, Pulp, or Empire...

All of which are okay films, I guess, but completely baffling as to why they inspire such insane hyper-praise by many, let alone Top Ten rating on IMDB. My only guess is that the majority of support for these films comes from your average mall multiplex/Blockbuster "movie fan" who sees a lot of crap, and really hasn't much experience with genuinely great films.

But now that I think about it, I suppose I just described the kind of person who would depend on IMDB for film viewing guidance anyway.

I think my obsession with Renior's La Regle du Jeu is well documented in this forum.

I might have ranked Sunrise higher, but that middle section in the city really drags on a bit. The scene where the couple pose for the photo seems like a pretty elaborate set up for a quick visual gag involving the statue. Then again, I thought the second act of Murnau's Faust was the weakest as well - Jannings is an incorrigible ham!

Outside of the two Godfathers and Casablanca, I can pretty definitely say that the list is disposable. I mean I like all of the films, but 12 Angry Men? How in the hell did that make the top 200, let alone 10? Cuckoo's Nest? Not even the best Nicholson. Empire Strikes Back???? Saying it is the best Star Wars does not make it a contender for a top ten of all time list.

Where in the hell is Singin' in the Rain? Seven Samurai? Citizen Kane? Some people need to expand their pre-1960's and foreign film knowledge.

Singin' in the Rain is #77
Seven Samurai is #12 (If this poll was extended by 1 movie, it would be included.)
Citizen Kane is #28
