I thought the movie was rock solid, but I do think that fanboys are going overboard about how great the movie is. It certainly doesn't feel like your run of the mill "superhero" movie. I like how human Batman is, complete with flaws and weaknesses.

^If there is anything that this horrible tragedy can teach us, it's that Harvey Dent's life was a precious, precious commodity. Just because he was the white knight of Gotham, it doesn't mean that he too can't not die in a freak gasoline fight accident.

Finally caught up to this. I think I liked it better than The Prestige...and it's much better than The Lookout.
Too bad it bombed (compared to Avatar).

Re: The Dark Knight: Overrated?
I'd say this movie is an American classic. That is, it's action, it involves a classic superhero, it's amazingly well-done, and it has great replay value.
Now, if it were to win Best Picture at the Oscars, I'd say that maybe it's over-rated. But nope, it was recognized as a popcorn movie, just an amazing one. I enjoyed it, and will continue to.
Best movies of all time? Dunno. One of the best action flicks though? Probably.

BEST ACTION FLICKS? What? No.
TDK is Heat w/ Batman. It's a damn Superhero movie that's more Crime Drama than standard Superhero genre. I like the hell out of this too but...it is overrated. I don't think Nolan made it to be JUST a recognized popcorn flick. He made it to make a good flick. And he succeeded at that, IMO. I'd say the action element in it is low compared to the tension and suspense from the plot. I love the action but....there's not a lot of it to be considered an action flick. It has several BIG action set peices but it's not a defining genre element to make it an action flick.

Re: The Dark Knight: Overrated?
I'm done dumping on people that hold this film in high esteem. Nothing wrong in enjoying what you enjoy, and no one should dictate taste.
As to whether it is 'over-rated', I'll just bring up what seemed to be the general consensus regarding Jack Nicholson's work in the part, prior to Nolan casting TDK. It wasn't uncommon to see exchanges like
"Won't be topped"
"Agreed. It's probably the most iconic comic book character performance ever"
"perfect mating of an actor with a role."
I think now considerably more people understand the complaints some of us have always had that the character was weakly written and Jack is just in check cashing mode doing his crazy Jack schtick- now that they can see a direct comparison with the same character when he's given a more compelling agenda and the fallout from his actions are treated more seriously. It was head to brick wall time whenever someone would make the comment that "thank God, the Burton films gotten the characters past all that campy nonsense".
Eventually I think someone will do a comic book superhero movie in such a way that it nails the balance between the 'truth' of the characters and their relationships and motivations, while at the same time allowing for the fun elements of camp(for lack of a better term) to filter up that is a natural, genetic component of such a hyperbolic premise as the costumed superhero.
Burton wasn't able to do it, imo, and Nolan got a lot closer, but still missed the target too going in the other direction.
Of course almost no one is going to really understand what I'm saying until there is a concrete example to point to. Until then, TDK is what Nicholsons Joker performance used to be.
I'm very interested to see what Matt Vaughn can do with X-men, but I think the big stumbling block there is the studio he's working for. Maybe it will be Webb with Spider-man. I'm not as optimistic about the DC stuff coming for some reason despite always having liked their characters more.

Re: The Dark Knight: Overrated?
EDIT: Obviously you can call it a mix of drama or thriller or crime or however precise you want to get, but it's clearly a mix of all those genres and action is a big part of it. IMDB lists all of those, and most sites seem to categorize it as an action/drama.

Re: The Dark Knight: Overrated?
I don't have a problem with it. Not enough to where if someone were to say that the Dark Knight was one of their favorite action movies that I would distinguish between action or action/drama. Who ever asks what someone's favorite action/drama is anyway?

Re: The Dark Knight: Overrated?
I'd put if need be for sake of simplicity a superhero flick...which encompasses many elements and doesn't just make it just one genre...much like most genres.

Re: The Dark Knight: Overrated?
I encompass TDK as a Crime/Drama. I don't really feel much superhero in it. It's very compelling tale and honestly the only way people can possibly think it's overrated is cause of all the fanboy love.
Throw that aside. Nolan easily made one of the greatest and compelling movies of all-time.

Re: The Dark Knight: Overrated?
I personally think it's a lot more Crime/Drama than what one would think as Superhero film as well. But for the sake of simplicity based on face value...it's a superhero flick to the average person.

Re: The Dark Knight: Overrated?
Kind of ironic considering how the Blu-rays for all three turned out...
