So, if we don't feel it is the greatest movie ever made, it is overrated?

If it wasn't for the oh so impossible cell phone sonar garbage it would have lived up to the hype machine. Everyones cell phone has sonar tech built into it and it just needs to be activated? It wouldn't have been so bad if it wasn't used as a major plot device. Also the Two Face stuff was just horrible. Huge chiseled jaw actor guy was good in the role but the whole premise is dumb. Doesn't fit Nolan's "realistic" atmosphere he is trying to create with these movies. Two Faces only motivation was avenging the death of Maggie Gyllenhaal? They couldn't find a better actress? She looks like a sad turtle. Oh and it's long as shit. Other than that it's better than Batman Begins. The Joker was awesome. Gordon was awesome. The city was awesome. Nice to see Gotham during the day for once. But in no way is it the best movie ever.

It is very rare that I'll go see a movie two days in a row, but I did. And I don't think I've ever gone to see a movie 3 times in a week, but I will probably end up seeing this again tonight or tomorrow night. And then, hopefully, in IMAX.

So overrated? No, I don't think so. Critical praise, box office record-breaking, audience adoration, etc. With this thread, we've reached how many total threads dedicated to this movie? 1047? Seriously, this is the first movie in a long time that, as Mr. Ackerly said, lived up to the hype. And it deserves all the praise in the world, as far as I'm concerned.

Agreed. I've been waiting for the demolition squad to start picking on this film. Anything in America that gets too big for its britches is promptly brought down - sad.

As a film, it's a good time. I don't consider it the best thing I've seen this year, but damn close to it. It's certainly not flawless for me... the pacing felt off, there was some hamfisted dialogue, the Ferry scene didn't work for me (w/o spoiling- the end result was a little cheesy... didn't fit for me). Could have done without the blackmail subplot and the Scarecrow scenes. I am by no means a Batman fanboy... but Bale's menacing voice was just a little bit over the top most of the time. The interrogation scene was all over the place... and yeah, it was the one time Joker was in the makeup and could tell it was Heath. But there was a lot to love too... mainly in the performances and a few clever little bits (Pencil trick is the best thing I've seen in a movie so far this year) that mostly came from Ledger's joker.

As a phenomenon, yeah I think it's slightly overrated. In fact, quite. I can see where this may be the end all for fans of the character and that's great. For fans of the summer blockbuster movie... yep, it's far beyond Pirates or Transformers. When I hear it hailed as one of the best crime films ever or best film of all time or even best film of the last decade I just can't jump on board with that. As a lot of people have pointed out, the hype is so high and it's hard to get a true perspective on a film barely a week old... it begins to feel like a fever.

The film is something I may see again in theatres and will certainly pick up on disc. I enjoy Nolan's work (I'd put The Prestige at #1 for him, Memento #2, TDK #3) and on repeat viewings I am sure I will find more to enjoy with it... but I am basing my "Yes" vote on the general opinion on IMDB... #1. In that respect, I feel it's overrated. Greatly.
+1 (excepting the order of things...I actually rank Memento #1, Prestige #2, and Begins #3)

They should shut down Hollywood. The ultimate movie has been made and there's no reason for anyone to make any more.

Yes, but this wouldn't be the first flick to reach 1047. Heck, the last one was Indiana Jones.

Its a very good movie that actually kept my interest all the way through...which is saying a lot considering the last few years of tepid Hollywood garbage...

I was going to say the same thing, which is why i voted yes. It does not deserve to be anywhere in the top 25. Maybe the top 100.

By fans and critics? Not really. To say it's the best superhero movie of all-time is reasonable. To say it's one of the year's best films is also fair. Although that says just as much about 2008's offerings thus far as it does about the quality of The Dark Knight.
Again, I agree. It is thus far the best superhero movie; it will probably be years before it is succeeded. It is also the best movie to come out this year; impressive on almost every scale. However, like you said... there was very little to come out this year that was impressive.

Overall, I'd say yes it is a tad overrated by people. I personally think it's a 3 1/2 star movie(out of 4), but the few flaws it has are minor ones. Now Iron Man. THAT is an overrated movie.
I wouldn't say it's overrated because it's not as if the reasons people like it were unjustified, or will become less important over time.

I actually wouldn't even mind if that happened... for a little bit. There was a time when I had a pretty substantial interest in checking out upcoming movies like Step Brothers, The X-Files Movie, Tropic Thunder, etc. Now, it just feels like... why bother? I don't see any of those movies or anything else coming out anytime soon that is likely to leave as lasting an impression. While I'll still probably end up checking out most of those movies, in my head, I'll just be like, "I could totally be watching The Dark Knight instead." I honestly don't think that about many movies at all, and while these are all different kinds of movies with varying degrees of filmmaking quality behind them, it just feels like this year has peaked for movies in July. I may end up being pleasantly surprised, but it's unlikely. Then again, I am looking forward to that movie with that boy wizard in November.

I hadn't really been paying attention to Movie Talk for awhile, so I probably missed all the Indiana Jones-related threads. Guess something about the Batman just brought out the geek in me.

No. It's not the best film ever made, but it's one of the few films in recent memory that has lived up to, or exceeded, the hype surrounding it. So I can't say all of the hype is undeserved.

Overrated by who? People caught up in the moment who languish in the fact that one of the main characters is dead? Yes. People calling this movie the best comic book adaptation ever made? Not so much. People who think that this movie set a standard that won't be surpassed for years to come? No.

Major problems are:

Spoiler:
1. The Harvey Dent/ Two-Face transformation was way too quick, and handled poorly. Am I to believe that he would transform within 24 hours from "the White Knight" to a homicidal killer?
2. No chemistry between Maggie and the Dark and White Knights.
3. Bale's Batman voice...
4. Several sub plots could have been trimmed...the extradition, the whole Two Face coda, anything when Rachel was on screen...
5. Pacing, pacing, pacing...ugh!
6. A hundred other people could have played the Joker. Of those hundred, 2 or 3 could have done better than Ledger. The hype machine is rolling rampant in this one...Should Ledger get a Oscar nod? No. Will he because of the circumstances surrounding his death? Yes. Will he win...I hope not.
7. The various cliches that were employed in the film made me want to retch. A love triangle...who wants to see Batman brood for 2 hours because he's love sick?
8. Hopefully, we'll get a "better class of criminal" in Gotham for the next one...you see, the Joker was nothing more than a force of nature that was personified in this film. He lacked motivation, he lacked any real ambition other than to create disorder. As such, we could have had Batman curse at a hurricane like King Lear for the same effect...

Don't get me wrong, I think it's an okay to good movie. Just not deserving of what response it's getting. Everything in this movie has been done countless times before, and dare I say better in countless films. I am happy it's doing well because I hope Nolan can redeem himself with a third outing.

Yes and No, any movie rated #1 ever is overrated. No movie can ever be #1, too many taste in movies out there. Some people love "Citizen Cane", but I cannot stand the movie, feel asleep every I have tried to watch it.

Now, I loved TDK, it was a great movie drama that happened to have Batman in it. The Joker was incredible, twist and turns throughout the movie, FX were great (But not too much CGI).

Had the same feeling walking out of this movie as I did when I walked out of "Superman: The Movie".

Will see the move again, I hope in IMAX.

Best Batman movie? Yes.

Best comic book/superhero movie of all time? Yes.

Best movie of the year? I'm still partial to In Bruges.

Overrated. No, not one bit.

YES! I still think "In Bruges" is the best movie of 2008. But best "Batman" movie? Come on, no doubt. YES! Best comic book/superhero movie of all time?? Hmm. I still prefer and love the original "Hellboy". Both are great and 10/10 films. As is "Iron Man" (IMO). Overrated? You need a time out if you say yes to this. It's lived up to all of it's hype and expectations. And then some. "Iron Man" was a sleeper comic book film. We all knew it'd be good, but no one expected 300M plus. All eyes were on "TDK" to become this summer's biggest comic book movie. Like last year, I'm very very happy with the roster of films this summer.

At this point, it could absolutely be a Best Picture nominee. Obviously there is much more year to go, but still, that says an awful lot about not only a Batman film, but a comicbook film in general.
