Samurai DVD's

I have not found anything on Japanese Samurai movies and would appreciate some information on the well made ones, not the Chinese horrible excuses for them, but the well made Japanese ones. I want to find movies like: Zen & Sword or Untamed Fury - the story of Miyamoto Musashi (Japanese with English subtitles) is a five part series, and Band of Assassins (Shinsengumi) 1970 color 122 min Starring: Mifune Toshiro, Kitaoji Kinya, Mikune Rentaro. There are many more good ones, but I cannot find even these. Is there any chance that one of you knows where to find them?

I have Seven Samurai, Sanjuro, Yojimbo, Samurai I, II and III, RAN, Sword of Doom, The Hidden Fortress, and Shogun's Samurai. Seven Samurai is one of my all-time favorites, but the real good ones are the Zen & Sword series, which are much better than the Samurai trilogy. They used to sell them from Japan to the U.S., but the internet store that had them went under just as I found it.

Are you asking for movie recommendations or DVD recommendations? If DVDs, then you are in the wrong forum.

You should check out Beat Takeshi's The Blind Swordman:Zatoichi.

Samurai Spy...
Sword Of The Beast...
The 47 Ronin Parts 1 & 2...

Hmmm...

In case you (the OP) aren't familiar with them, a couple of good search terms (general, not just for DVD Talk) are:

chanbara
jidaigeki

These will generate some good results.

I will definitely give a second thumbs up to Dr. Mabuse's list. I own a bunch of those and they are good.

I can't recommend the original Zatoichi (and even the TV series!) movies with Katsu Shintaro enough.

Another series which is cool is the Lone Wolf and Cub set of movies (Re-edited versions of which are know as belonging to the Shogun Assassin series). God stuff. I have also seen the first DVD of the LW&C TV show and really like it.

Sword of Doom is also a good flick too.

Looking in the International Forum (if you haven't already done so) should also yield some good discussions and info.
