They're gonna have to win me back. I loved the first three, but IV was garbage.

I saw Saw at a pre-screening, we saw the "How Fucked Up Is That?" teaser (still an awesome teaser) and my friends and all thought it looked insane and original. James Wan and Leigh Whannell were at that screening and I have a signed poster and everything. I've seen them all in theaters since then and while they no longer feel new, I still enjoy them. I'm tired of some of the series' hallmarks at this point (please lose the "Live or die. Make your choice." line, or at least use it selectively), but they're fun and while it's also convoluted the continuity is kinda genius, in a schlock movie kinda way.
For me:
1. Saw IV
2. Saw
3. Saw II
4. Saw III
I thought Saw IV was exceptionally clever, had the best acting of any of the chapters, sweet transitions (some of the recutting I could do without, where they show a line delivered nine ways), and (for me anyway) holds up under repeat viewings. The original comes in second, though, with such a strong premise and a cool ending (although never as awesome as the first time -- I was totally disappointed because I thought the movie's "red herring" was the ending, and man was I surprised). The second one is okay, although it was clearly written in a hurry. Another pass could have balanced the screen time for the characters out and thus been a better film, but the twist is nice, the return of the bathroom was a huge geek out for me and the needle pit is fucking awesome. Worst for me is the third one, which is smart enough and occasionally enjoyable but I find Shawnee to be quite irritating as Amanda (maybe that's the idea), and same for Bahar Soomekh as Lynn (probably not the idea). Even more of a downer is Jeff, who has the exact same reaction to every trap, which is to let out a bunch of tortured screams and then give in. Also, while it seems wrong, these movies are supposed to be kinda fun, but Saw III piles so many tests of Jeff's sorrow that it becomes exceptionally unlikable. Also, Jigsaw is really goofy ("Death is a surprise party."). The shotgun collar, however, is the best.
My only real complaint is that after I and II I thought this would be a neat franchise where new directors could cut their teeth with each chapter, but then Bousman made three in a row. Too bad.
Looking forward to V. Such a great poster, perhaps the best of the series.

I have to give props to Darren Lynn Bousman who directed II-IV. He turned what was otherwise a really low budget independent film into a hugely successful and commercial film franchise.
I wasn't a fan of James Wan and Leigh Whannell's writing in Part I. I thought Bousman did a great job turning the series around and setting up the series starting with Part II.
It's too bad that he's now left the franchise to do other things. I am confidant that David Hackl will do a great job with Part V.

Remember, Bousman's script was an original idea that was remodeled to fit the Saw universe before Saw even hit theaters.
Wan and Whannell returned to write Saw III with the Feast guys writing Saw IV and the next two sequels.

It's pretty impressive that they have been making these within such a short time frame and keeping the quality up despite the low budget.
I have to put the first one as my favorite though.

I like Saw III the best, IV was enjoyable but felt like 3.5 rather than a stand alone, the first 2 are about equal but with different strengths.

When I clicked on this thread...and I am not joking...I thought this was going to be a discussion about...
Which I know wasn't a movie in America, but it was released as a movie overseas. So somebody could have discovered it for the first time and opted to start a thread on it here...

Saw IV asked a lot more questions and only answered, what, one or two? We found out what was on the cassette tape and that Donnie Wahlberg finally ate it.
[I will give the crew that they are amazing at keeping secrets. Nobody knew that Wahlberg was returning for Saw III, mostly due to everyone denying it during interviews. It was even more of a shock when he was there for IV.]
And
for V.
I even enjoy V: The Final Battle. The television series, never happened.

I must be in the minority a bit....but let me explain.
Saw I was good...my bro suggested it, watched it on a whim thinking it would suck and it wasn't that bad. About a 3.5 out of 5. So I would see #2.
Saw II was great. Little bro and I saw it opening night and got a kick out of it. They expanded the mythos and the twist was pretty cool. This one stands up to repeat viewings.
Saw III, watched that one late one night...another solid one...clearly setup the next set of films. But visually I thought this one was one of the best.
Saw IV, had to see this one twice (and read a few reviews) for it to sink in. After second viewing, it made total sense and I felt it was executed rather well. And it sets up V nicely.
So If I had to rank them it goes like this:
Saw II
Saw I
Saw III
Saw IV

I've got to give them credit - they always come up with a great poster for each film. I thought Saw IV was pretty damn weak, but I'll still see V because it's become tradition to see one each Halloween, regardless of quality.

Meh, on that teaser. I couldn't really tell what the hell the trap was supposed to be.
I remember the hype for the first one- horror sites, fangoria, rue morgue. Everyone was getting super pumped. The movie came and I was disappointed. Eventually, it grew on me and, as mentioned here, I just like to think of the series as a modern day horror franchise milked to death... just sleazy fun. Though IV was a really, really, really low point for a set of movies that never set the bar too high... that could have been because I was coming off of III which, IMHO, is quite damned good for what it is. Certainly, the highlight of the series.
So, yeah... I'll see this. The poster is fantastic, I don't mind giving 'em 7 bucks for that alone.

Teaser was meh. Hopefully we get a better trailer or another teaser soon. I still find that with each film, the series has gotten better. Cant wait for V and then finally VI.

Really enjoyed the first film.
I've yet to see any of the Saw films theatrically. Might have to drag my girlfriend to the fifth film this time around.
