Well, everyone did pretty much think he was an asshole. They did cut some things out that showed he at least had some relationships (albeit physical), but that generally his powers always kept him at arms length.

And again... "Everyone"? Everyone doesn't agree with you. I certainly don't. And judging by the number of people (film goers, not "critics") who rated the movie at 8 and above, I'd say that I'm not alone in that disagreement.

I thought the concept was great, but I was really hoping we'd see a bigger glimpse of how he became so surly and misanthropic.
I thought that was pretty well explained by the dinner scene dialog.
Spoiler:
He was angry and bitter, both at himself and the world, that no one had been there for him at the hospital in 1931 when he was so badly injured. He concluded that he must have been a pathetic person, so he lived down to his own expectations. Once he learned the truth, he began to be able to understand, and overcome those feelings.

I suppose they could have used a flashback to add more punch to it, since it ended up being mostly exposition, but still, the explanation was there.
Spoiler:
Plus, being an immortal he was perpetually "young", and in his amnesiac state this would have only served to confuse and anger him more, since any relationship he forged would be doomed to fail.

Too summarize a rather long review I wrote on my myspace blog:

The first 45 minutes were great, the 2nd 45 minutes were paint-by-numbers Hollywood crap. There was SO much potential to make this something unique, but I'm sure having the world's biggest star, and a $150m budget, kept studio heads from letting this thing become it's own. They obviously wanted to make it cliche for mainstream audiences and that is it's major downfall.

I definitely remember that. Don't get me wrong, it's not like I don't recall the explanations given in the film. But he was a rotten person because...no one claimed him at the hospital and so he assumed he wasn't such a great guy? I just wanted a lot more in that explanation.

I would think kids would love him (like Bateman's son). I'd think girls would find him very attractive. Since he sleeps on park benches and lives in a trailer, you'd think he'd at least befriend a homeless person.

While I didn't like the movie overall, I really liked the concept. I was just much more curious as to why he was SO misanthropic. I was at first thinking it related back to a horrid childhood, awful parents, or something specifically dealing with his super powers, but we come to find out that he doesn't even remember anything or who he was.

You should calm down. It's a message board. Let me rephrase for anyone reading my words literally: many, most are in agreement that the latter half of the movie pales in comparison to the first. Even those who liked it.

No problem. The big twist is...
Spoiler:
Ray's (Jason Bateman) wife Mary (Charlize Theron) is also a "superhero", although she chooses to keep her powers secret and never use them. She and Hancock are from the same race of immortal superbeings, the rest of whom have died, due to part of their genetic makeup. When two of them become physically and emotionally close, they lose their powers, becoming mortal. Mary explained that this was done to allow them to choose to live a normal life, grow old, and die.

Hancock and Mary were once married, and thus mortal, but it resulted in him being seriously injured, causing permanent retrograde amnesia. She was so distraught over his near death that she decided they could never again risk being together, so she abandoned him.

Spoiler:
Charlize Theron is also part of the immortal race of angels that Smith belongs to. She has as much, if not more, power as Smith. They start to become mortal when they get close to each other.

Rent the damn movie when it comes out on DVD! I never understand people who have no interest in seeing a movie to know about plot details.

the immortality thing doesn't make a shit bit of sense if you ask me, she screws over Ray with this, he eventually ages and dies, she continues to live and not age.... what a bummer situation.

It was weird seeing a red-band trailer for StepBrothers (the f-bomb got dropped in it) in front of Wanted. but I digress...

.......really?

I seen the trailer for the movie a few times in the theater and each time it gets the most laughs from a trailer in a long time. I think its a gonna be a pretty big hit, most people really starting cracking up during the bunk bed sequence.

And your understanding is all I crave. I don't want to read Crime and Punishment, but I have to know what happens to Raskolnikov!

Thanks to the others for the info.

But you already have some vested interest in it that you know the characters.

Really? The crowd I was with not only reacted with loud laughter throughout the trailer and particularly at the end with the bunk bed, some even cheered when the trailer started.

I see what you're saying but then again, it only seems fucked up in regards to Ray. But she said they were made that way so that if they chose to love they would have "normal" lives. It's actually quite touching. How often are Superheroes in comic books looking for "normal" lives?

Right. And they were apparently very happy and in love. However, he had saved her many times over the centuries and this is due to the fact that they seem to attract trouble. The vibe I got from her explanation was that she could no longer take a chance on him being killed due to not having powers because they were together; and because he was a natural when it came to saving people. She sacrificed their relationship so that he could save the world. It seemed an act of true love which throws one off at first because initially, it seems she left him because he was an ass.

But he didn't became an angry ass until right AFTER he lost his memory thinking no one came to get him at the hospital which was wrong. She did come, but she chose to let him be a hero.

Yeah, I debated whether to add that part of the backstory into my explanation, but I got lazy. Thanks for filling in the gaps.

the whole film looks like it's geared to be viewed and enjoyed by a group of retarded 9-year olds.

Always funny when one person who thinks a movie looks entertaining says the audience reacted one way while another who thinks a movie looks like shit says the audience reacted another way.

Red Band trailer for that one had me laughing.

And your point is? BTW, I think you're right. But who says that's a bad thing if done right?
