Aside from the AvP movies, "Alien" ceased being a viable franchise over a decade ago.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if, in the near future, Fox decides to "relaunch" the franchise with a younger Ripley, a redesigned Alien, nu-metal music, and a teenaged Nostromo crew spitting out script-doctored wisecracks.

'Hellraiser' redo in Laugier's hands
Writer-director to help realize Dimension's relaunch
By Borys Kit and Gregg Goldstein

Oct 29, 2008, 01:00 AM ET
Pascal Laugier, whose horror film "Martyrs" stirred controversy in his native France, is in final negotiations to write and direct Dimension's re-imagining of "Hellraiser," one of horrormeister Clive Barker's best-known creations.

Released in 1987, "Hellraiser" told the story of an unfaithful wife who attempts to assist her dead lover in his escape from hell. The movie introduced viewers to a race of demons called Cenobites, most notably one nicknamed Pinhead -- who became one of the most enduring horror characters of the decade -- who was summoned using an antique puzzle box.

Dimension has been hoping to relaunch the franchise for the past couple of years, first hiring Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo to write and direct a remake then tapping Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton to write a new draft.

ICM-repped Laugier at least seems to have thematic sympathies with the material, with his "Martyrs" beginning as a revenge movie then entering the grounds of spiritual horror, with torture figuring as a focal point. Torture -- though not the so-called horror subgenre of torture porn -- also is a key point in "Hellraiser."

"This is a dream project for me," Laugier said. "I know Clive Barker's work very well, and I would never betray what he has done. Fans are expecting a definitive 'Hellraiser,' and I don't want to take that away from them."

"Martyrs" has been dividing audiences since appearing at the Festival de Cannes because of its unrelenting violent nature. The movie was hit with a 18+ rating -- a rarity in France and an equivalent of NC-17 in the U.S. -- sparking a protest by the country's Society of Film Directors.

At the Toronto International Film Festival, several people reportedly fainted during its midnight screenings. The Weinstein Co. is the domestic distributor, but no dates have been announced.

The remake is part of Dimension chief Bob Weinstein's master plan.

"If I could make all my films from franchises, I would," the Weinstein Co. co-chairman said at the recent Media and Money conference in New York. At the event, presented by Dow Jones and the Nielsen Co., parent company of The Hollywood Reporter, he rattled off a list of other films that he hopes to continue sequelizing, including "Scream" and "Scary Movie."

Borys Kit reported from Los Angeles; Gregg Goldstein reported from New York.

re: Hellraiser (2022, D: Bruckner)

From FB:

HOT FROM HELL! My friends,I have some news which may be of interest to you. A few weeks ago I had a very productive meeting with Bob Weinstein of Dimension Pictures,in the course of which I pitched a remake of the first HELLRAISER film. The idea of my coming back to the original film and telling the story with a fresh intensity - honoring the structure and the designs from the first incarnation but hopefully creating an even darker and richer film - was attractive to Dimension. Today I have officially been invited to write the script based upon that pitch. What can I tell you about it?

Well, it will not be a film awash with CGI. I remain as passionate about the power of practical make-up effects as I was when I wrote and directed the first HELLRAISER. Of course the best make-up in the world loses force if not inhabited by a first-rate actor. I told the Dimension team that in my opinion there could never be a Pinhead without Doug Bradley, and much to my delight Bob Weinstein agreed. So once the papers are signed, I will open a Lemarchand Configuration, dip my quill in its contents and start writing. I promise that there will be nowhere on the Internet where the news of my progress will be more reliable than here, because the only author of these reports will be Your Infernal Corespondent, me.

My very best wishes to you
all,my friends.
Clive.

Now this I can get behind.

Well that is interesting, especially since Clive just submitted a draft of his new book, which is meant to be the end of Pinhead's story, to his publisher.

I know Clive has been trying to get control back over Pinhead in the last few years, so maybe he decided that the best way to do it was to dance with the devil, so to speak.

Now if he can just get that third Book of the Art finished, I'll be happy.

I've all but given up on Cabal II, Cabal III, and Galilee II.

I'd be fine with this. The original just in terms of content would need little to modernize. I love that BD I got.

I wonder what rating they're going for? I'd love to see it go balls out and get released unrated.

Would it need to be? It could go places but the first Hellraiser went places but was also very fucking classy about it. I dunno maybe it went harder that could go good for it too.

Barker hasn't directed in years, I'd be surprised and pleased if he's returning to the chair.

re: Hellraiser (2022, D: Bruckner)

I mentioned this in the Nightbreed thread, but at last night's screening Barker talked about what he wanted to write for the remake. He said he was upset that the sequels lost sincerity and ignored the rules that he labored to set up. He said that the Cenobites were very dear to him, which is why he felt he needed to write the remake instead of someone else. He feels that in the years since the first film's debut, the world has caught up to the S&M world that he mined for inspiration on the Cenobites, so now they need to be more transgressive and out there than what we already expect. He stressed that as a writer and producer he would work his hardest to make the remake something worthwhile and true to the characters, but ultimately he can't control everything that ends up on screen (and he can't direct because of health issues).

It was also revealed that The Scarlet Gospels, his book which features Harry D'Amour and Pinhead, probably won't be out until 2016.

re: Hellraiser (2022, D: Bruckner)

From EW, Barker reveals he recently sent Dimension Films chief Bob Weinstein the second draft of his screenplay for a new HELLRAISER movie, which Barker describes as a “very loose” remake of his original film.

“I think the phrase is ‘reboot,’ although I’ve never really understood what that meant,” he says. “I wanted to make sure we sounded some fresh notes. The movie actually begins on Devil’s Island. I wanted to fold into the Hellraiser narrative something about the guy—the Frenchman Lemarchand—who made the mysterious box, which raises Pinhead. I figured, ‘Well, what would have happened to him?’ He might well have been taken to Devil’s Island and I thought that would be a pretty cool place to start the movie. We’re waiting for Bob to come back to us and see when we’re going to actually make the movie.”

re: Hellraiser (2022, D: Bruckner)

excuse me while I temporarily derail this thread. But as best as I can tell from IMDB there are about 8 or 9 Hellraiser films, my question for you guys that might have seen them, are any of the sequels worth a damn? I've only seen the original.

I thought Hellraiser 5: Inferno was actually really solid. Other than that, you're not missing much.
