Okay, just wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy. I figured it would basically be a Pixar film in terms of the people involved, though. Did he say why they didn't want it to be Pixar branded?
Edit: just looked it up, they basically don't want a PG-13 Pixar film.

It's probably like The Black Hole where they don't want a more adult-themed film to be associated with a company that traditionally produces family titles.

Re: PIXAR: John Carter of Mars Trilogy
In Princess of Mars, Carter's background as a Confederate Civil War vet is about one line of throwaway character history mentioned by the narrator. He is more often referred to as a "Southern gentleman from Virginia." When the story starts out Carter is actually a cowboy somewhere in the southwestern territories well after the end of the Civil War.
Having read all of his Mars and Venus stories, and many of the Tarzan novels, I can tell you that ERB wasn't a racist... despite what many critics say. On the contrary, he populated the Mars stories with a plethora of races, human and otherwise, whom John Carter made friends and allies with... predating by decades Flash Gordon's adventures on Mongo. One of the more memorable ethnicities ERB created were the Black Pirates.
I'm really looking forward to this. If only they can stay away from the typical Disney-fication (think Disney's Tarzan) that usually takes place when they adapt something. There's very little humor in the book and I hope they keep it that way.

A friend of mine lent me his old paperback copy of A Princess of Mars last year, and I devoured it over three fairly interrupted nights. I'm surprised no one has outright speculated how much violence and nudity from the novel will find its way into the screen adaptation. I suspect they'll get away with a certain amount of violence because it happens to alien beings, and the MPAA doesn't seem too concerned about "fantasy violence," and they'll tastefully adorn the human-type characters with loin cloths and such. Still, and I don't really care what it says about me as a person at this point in my life, I think a small part of me will miss those things not being as definitive as they are in the prose.

Willem Dafoe?! Crazy. I thought Thomas Hayden Church had gotten the role. I suppose he never specified what role he'd have, but he seemed like a good fit for Tars Tarkas.

English actors Samantha Morton, Dominic West and Polly Walker have joined "John Carter of Mars," Disney's adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs book series that Andrew Stanton is directing.
Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins and Willem Dafoe already are on board the production, which centers on a Civil War veteran (Kitsch) who finds himself mysteriously transported to Mars, where he becomes embroiled with the planet's warring people.
Morton plays Sola, the daughter of Dafoe's Tars Tarkas, who must hide her softer side from her warmongering race.
West plays Sab Than, prince of the Zodangans who believes he is entitled to rule Mars.
Walker plays Sarkoja, a merciless, tyrannical Thark.
Stanton wrote the screenplay with Mark Andrews. Jim Morris and Colin Wilson are producing "Mars," which is eyeing a start early next year. Brigham Taylor is overseeing for the studio.
Morton, repped by WME and Wishlab, next appears in the ensemble war drama "The Messenger."
West, repped by WME and United Agents, starred in HBO's "The Wire" and appeared in "300."
Walker might be best known for her work on HBO's "Rome," in which she played the conniving Atia of the Julii. The actress, repped by Gersh, Hamilton Hodell and Authentic Management, recently wrapped production on "Clash of the Titans," in which she played Cassiopeia.

This should have been the movie that Cameron did in 3-D, not AVATAR (which reminds me a little of John Carter of Mars).

Interesting casting choice of Kitsch. I like him well enough on Friday Night Lights, but he doesn't have much range on there, especially to lead one to believe he could be the lead in this.

I like how it looks so far, but I wish they'd kept the full title. "John Carter" sounds like it's the title of some troubled youth sports film.

I read all the books and there's absolutely nothing in that trailer that offers even a remote hint of the source material, other than the guy's name. It looks like a generic Hollywood sword-and-sorcery fantasy. But there's nothing in the imagery that recalls Edgar Rice Burroughs. I'll pass.

Hrm....very iffy on this. Don't like the name change. That guy played Gambit...what else has he been in cuz he wasn't all that great in Wolverine Origins.
It has potential cuz of Stanton but I'm not digging it so far.
