I don't know if this is true or not, but I have heard this story a few times before: During the filming of the Empire Strikes Back scene where Han is about to be frozen and Leia finally says "I love you", Carrie was so drugged up she kept messing up that scene. Han's original line was supposed to be "I love you too." Because Carrie was messing it up so much and they had to keep redoing the scene over and over, Harrison was getting really impatient so he said "I know." Evidently, that was Carrie's best performance, and they thought the "I know" line suited Han's character more, so they kept it.

I also saw this when it aired November 17, 1978 on CBS.
I remember begging my dad to race home in the car so we could be in front of the tube in time to videotape this....
Who wouldn't be fooled into thinking this would be the coolest thing to hit the airwaves from this original ad in TV GUIDE?

Doesn't that ad make it look like Han, Luke, and Leia would be the main characters of the story with a bunch of new X-Wing/TIE Fighter battles mixed in?

Man, I remember watching the Star Wars Holiday Special when it was first on.
I was so excited, and then - even though I was only 10 - I was so disappointed. I liked it, and had fun watching it, but I knew it was crap!
And this only 2 months after the greatness that was KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park! Ahhhh, 1978 TV - gotta love it!

The Star Wars Holiday Special confirms your grandfather's theory that everyone was on drugs in the 1970s.

I wonder what it was about the original Star Trek series that turned them all into dicks on Twitter?

Re: The Star Wars Holiday Special
Does Shatner remember he directed Star Trek V: The Final Frontier?
