There weren't many in the matinee showing I went to, but that scene drew a big thumbs up from the audience. It was hilarious!
Saw this last night and yes, the entire theater applauded at that point

Overall I thought it was great..........i'll definitely buy it. the ending is brutal though...but i give them credit for doing it that way

Hell! I even applauded (of a crowd of about fifteen folk) - still mulling over the movie in general though.

Maybe it was just the state I was in (depressed), but I really got caught up in this whole movie. I didn't expect it to be a creature/monster movie, but it was done extremely well.

Very good stuff. I've always been a fan of Thomas Jane though, so it might be a bit bias.

I read the story again after the movie and definitely preferred the ending in the book....for those who have not read it, it's one of his better endings:

Spoiler:
the group is in a restaurant and they are all asleep except for the guy, the guy finds a radio and batteries in the managers office. He tunes in for awhile trying to hear something. He turns it all the way to the end of the AM band when he thinks he hears something. Just one word, but he's not sure. He doesn't know how they're going to make it, but if he could have just really heard this one word and it not be his imagination, there might be hope. The entire story has been written by him and he decides to leave behind the pages, just in case he really heard the word, that way someone else will find their story. The he goes to kiss his son goodnight before going to bed and whispers in his ear "two words that sound a bit a like". One is hope, the other is Hartford. And that's the end of the story. I like the believe he really did hear the word Hartford on the radio and they are able to get help there, but I'm a happy ending type of person so who knows?

I loved the movie...I thought it was expertly crafted, the acting was incredible and the ending just blew my mind... I haven't felt so tired and emotionally exhausted after a movie in a long time. Darabont should be the only one allowed to make Stephen King movies - seriously. Please get him onto 'Cell' as soon as possible.

Also, I thought the ending was earned
Spoiler:
Thomas Jane promises his son that no matter what, he will not let the monsters get him. They run out of gas, in the middle of buttfuck nowhere - it seems inevitable that the monsters will get them.

The adults have seen so much death, haven't had even a glimmer of hope since they left the store, why wouldn't they think it was better to go out on their own terms than it is to be torn to shreds and die a horrific and painful monster inflicted death that they've witnessed previous.

The reason they fight so hard to leave the supermarket is to see if The Mist actually has an end - if they can come out on the other side...but after driving as far as they did, they realized there was NOTHING THERE...there was no end to the mist (so they thought). So it makes perfect sense and IMO they lay the groundwork for it throughout the film.
Very well put, sums up my feelings exactly. I am so glad the studio had the balls to release this ending. I thought it was very well done overall for a horror film. 8/10 for me.

It thought it was decent, although I still prefer the book ending to the movie's. Still, it was an interesting and daring choice to go with that ending, so I'll at least give them credit for doing so.

One other minor point - anybody else notice that this was the third Daranbot directed Stephen King movie with William Sadler in it? They must be good friends, and/or he really likes his acting chops.

How can you spend the entire movie fighting and clawing for survival, only to give up and commit suicide?
I dont mind unhappy endings, in fact I love them... but the way this ended just bothered me.

Spoiler:
I don't think it was a turnaround at all. Look at the facts:

- You've seen that there are creatures which can sting you to death, lay eggs in your living body, and cut you in half.

- You've driven at least 200 miles (assuming the SUV had 10 gallons of gas in it, and they got 20 mpg) and have encountered no signs of human life, nor an end to the mist.

- You have no contact with the outside world to find out if there is indeed an end to the mist.

- You just saw a 10 storey tall creature walk past you, and you realize there could be ANYTHING out there in the mist.

- You're out of gas, have no food or supplies, and you can hear the screams and roars of monsters all around you, getting closer.

Given all those points, plus the promise he made to his son, I don't think their decision was out of character at all. Who wouldn't rather die quickly rather than be eaten alive or filled full of other-dimensional spider eggs?

I agree the ending was grim, but I'm glad they went with this one. It's stuck with me all weekend. If they'd gone with a shiny happy ending I think I would have felt cheated. It definitely wouldn't have had the same impact.

Finally was able to catch this tonight. I loved it. I loved every minute of it. The ending was a shocker, but not undeserved as some have suggested. The cast was great, especially Marcia Gay Harden and Thomas Jane. It's a shame this movie hasn't done any better, because it's miles beyond most everything else out there right now (I'm not including No Country For Old Men in that statement), and looks better than anything else that's going to come out this month.

Saw it this morning. This is pretty-much what I thought about it.

My thoughts exactly. I'm wondering if the timing has somthing to do with it underperforming? Maybe this isn't a movie that should be playing during the Holidays, when families are wanting to go to the theatre together. Maybe it would have been more successful if it had been released in October?

this might have been answered, but why wasn't Braugher's character
Spoiler:
given a much better satisfying demise
- he was itching for it IMO.

I doubt any of you remember me going on and on about how much I hated The Village and The Day After Tomorrow? If not, just go back and read my thoughts on them both.

The reason I mention that in this thread is simple - in my opinion, The Mist is right up there with the aforementioned pieces of crap. I don't know how anyone can actually call this a great film, unless they only mean "great" in that it's great to mock and to make fun of from beginning to in. Now that, I'll agree with. I saw it with my cousin, and it was just us and a group of three other people watching. We all thought it was horrible, and mocked it all the while. Hell, me and my cousin basicly wrote the film as it went along. After one scene, we'd guess what we thought the next horrible moment, cliche would happen next, and sure enough that's pretty much exactly what would happen.

I'm not even going to bother going into details, but my God, this was one horrible picture. One of the most unintentionally funny horrible movies in quite a while.

Well, Jeffrey DeMunn (Dan) has been in Shawshank, Green Mile, The Majestic, and The Mist. I like how he uses a lot of the same actors in different roles.

As for the movie, I definitely enjoyed it. It was refreshing to see a horror movie that wasn't torture porn. In fact, the movie really got to me and I can't stop thinking about it. I was really absorbed in it for the duration of the film. And the ending...wow! Do have to agree with others that the studios showed some major guts in having an ending like that.

YOU are EXACTLY the kind of person that, were I sitting next to you in the theater, I'd have you removed...or worse. Discussing the film while it's playing?!? You must be out of your fucking mind to think that other paying customers in a theater want to hear that sort of bullshit, whether you think the movie is crap or classic. We don't give a shit what you think of it; shut the hell up and let the rest of us enjoy it.

Trust me, the five of us in the small theater were all perfectly ok with it, and we said as much. I wouldn't do anything like that normally.

Saw this last week at the $1 theater, I loved it until the end, the last 5 minutes were a mix of highly out of character, lame, and predictable. It hammered the moral home but it didn't work for me -- reminded me way way way too much of
Spoiler:
Shaun of the Dead
which is fine... if it were a comedy.

The ending left me exhausted and tormented and drained.

Great stuff. I'll probably buy the DVD.

I'm well and truly grateful that the Director went with the ending he did. Would've hated Kings ending. Having them just drive off into the mist "Do they live or die? You decide..." God, talk about a boring and completely ball-less way to end the story.

King does deserve some credit though, as on the DVD extras he's quoted as telling the Director that he wishes he'd thought of that ending himself.

Quite powerful stuff that was very reminiscent of how I felt at the end of The Descent: Directors cut. I'll take the kick in the gut ending every time thank you.

I actually thought the exact same thing. To me, the ending kind of proved the legitimacy of what she was saying all along. She was dead on with that statement. Definitely made me think some.
