What hurt The Mist's BO the most....that shitty Fog re-make that came out two years back.

I saw the film with six other people last night. Two people thought it was some of the "stupidest shit" they've witnessed recently (they obviously never got to catch Across the Universe) while the rest of us thought it was great.
I completely echo mdc3000's thoughts on the flick. The ending, with no doubt in my mind, absolutely fit what came before it.

This might be...
the best adaptation of a King story I've seen. The story has been a fave of mine for years, and I thought it was all around excellent. I could have done without CGI squid tenticles, but other than that, liked the film quite a bit. I thought the ending fit, but if they all just went out into the mist together and just faded away into it, I think that would have been better, but it wouldn't fit what had happened before. Frank had no other option with his son, he made him a promise that the monsters wouldn't get him. The only way to keep the promise, was for him to kill his son. And considering Mrs. Carmody's thoughts, I found it interesting that he killed his son, and the mist went away.

Although there were times during it I thought it might be a stinker and some dialog was pretty bad and the acting was somewhat inconsistent, by the end I thought it was one of the best horror films in a long time. I thought there would be one of two endings. They chose the right one.
I would grade Darabont's movies:
Shawshank: A+
Mist: A-
Green Mile: B-
Majestic: D- (I'm being generous)

I loved it. I thought the ending was devastating, and I thought the F/X were great given the budget, hentai tentacles at the loading dock not withstanding. Mother Carmody was a tad over the top.... but not much. In a situation like that, that's pretty much exactly how I picture a crowd reacting, with one religious nutter stepping up and the majority of the rest of the people falling in behind him/her.

I saw this movie hours ago and I am still bummed out by the whole thing. It was a good movie to be sure and all the actors were great, but yeah, not the feel good movie of the year by any stretch. Damn. Just... damn.

I was impressed with the approach Darabont took with King's novella. I never thought much of the story -- and pondered why Darabont chose to adapt it.
After seeing the movie though, it was very well-constructed. I was very impressed with how this played out on the big screen.
Solid B.

Did anyone else find it obvious that the actress who played the religious freak based her performance on Gollum? She even did the voice. And the scene where she was talking to herself in the bathroom, I thought, was very reminiscent of the scenes in LoTR when Gollum was talking to himself.

I loved this movie. I saw it with a pretty packed theater and everyone was really into it. I thought Darabont did a great job with the script. Characters were well written and, fo rthe most part, acted how they should have. We didn't have a lot of the stereotypical people that populate a horror flick. These were normal, smart people that find themselves in a tight situation and they react. My only real complaint might be the use of CG which seemed a little dated. I would rather have had practical FX work where possible, but this is a minor complaint since the only real CG issue that was obvious were the tentacles. I loved the ending. I thought it should have just went black after he got out of the car and was standing in the mist, but that too is a minor complaint. 9/10 from me. Darabont is 3 for 3 with King films.

The wife and I saw this as a "double feature"
with Enchanted last night. Never really read any Stephen King but I've seen Shawshank and Green Mile. I thought this was great. I was loving the movie and it was the first time in a long while where I actually didn't know what was going to happen and I was urging on the characters--quietly, mind you--to just "get the hell out!". Cheered when Marcia Gay Harden's character bit it. And I too, would have preferred if they ended it after the shot of the Huge Monster. The ending kinda ruined it for me. But I'm still recommending it to people I know.

Didn't expect much and found it to be refreshing. A good, solid horror film. I kept thinking "Man, I wish this was in Black and white". Funny, thing is, in a recent Rue Morgue interview, Daramount said he really wanted to film it in B&W and might have a option on the DVD.
Yes, the FX were weak but it was pretty sound through, even at its 2hr and 7min running time.
Grade: B

I would love to see more films like this.
No, not horror.
No, not Stephen King Adaptations.
What I would like to see more of, is low bugget quick films done by A-list writers, directors and actors.
As a B-movie horror film, I kept thinking that it really could not have been done better. It really elevated the film.
The Mist will make money because of it's budget. I would love to see more movies made with a similar low bufget, qucik schedule, but high quality approach. I think we would see some AWESOME movies.

Kennyx, it was established in this film that the son didn't want to be eaten by the monsters, and his father would not let that happen. They got to a point where that seemed like the only option. It was either get eaten or commit suicide.
It makes sense to me and didn't feel out of character, which will happen to people depending on how extreme the situation is anyway. It's called going crazy. I imagine non-stop driving in a dense fog, with the world as you know it dying, could make anyone rethink everything. Of course, a major theme of the film is to keep hope, which was lost by the end, and so losing hope means something "worse" must happen to reinforce that theme.
