Only the theatres with the "X" in the Dolby Atmos column have it, of course.

This is the list of Dolby Atmos theaters according to:
http://www.dolby.com/us/en/consumer/...tml#3-Theatres

Canada

Cineplex® SilverCity Yonge-Eglinton Cinemas (Toronto, ON)

United States

AMC® Aventura 24 (Aventura, FL)

AMC Barrywoods 24 (Kansas City, MO)

AMC Downtown Disney 24 (Lake Buena Vista, FL)

AMC Empire 25 (New York, NY)

AMC Metreon 16 (San Francisco, CA)

AMC Ontario Mills 30 (Ontario, CA)

ArcLight Sherman Oaks (Sherman Oaks, CA)

Brenden Theatres at the Palms (Las Vegas, NV)

Cinemark® Century at Pacific Commons (Fremont, CA)

Cinemark West Plano and XD (Plano, TX)

Cinetopia Vancouver Mall 23 (Vancouver, WA)

Maya Cinemas Pittsburg 16 (Pittsburg, CA)

Santikos Palladium IMAX (San Antonio, TX)

ShowPlace™ ICON at Roosevelt Collection (Chicago, IL)

If you crosscheck that with the HFR theaters, you may find some that have both. However, there's no guarantee that the screen with the Atmos system is the same screen that will be showing HFR 3D. I'd call the theater to double-check.

Thanks for the tip. I was having a hard time finding anything for HFR, didn't think to do a search for it.

Awesome. Dallas for me. I think that IMAX theater is the same one I went to see TDKR. Easy but somewhat longish of a drive for me.

Isn't Plano a little closer? Or is the theater in Dallas nicer?

Re: The Hobbit

Plano is on the opposite side of Dallas for me. If the Dallas one that I'm thinking I went to is the same one that I'm seeing on that list...it's just a regular theater. It's good.

If any theater that I favor really well. It's the Cinemark close to me here. They keep it really clean and I rarely, if ever, have issues there.

Re: The Hobbit

Posted in the star trek thread, thought useful in this thread as well:

First 9 minutes to play in front of Hobbit IMAX:

http://www.darkhorizons.com/news/255...el-with-hobbit

Now the studios are swapping places with Paramount Pictures announcing that they will premiere the opening nine minutes from J.J. Abrams’ "Star Trek Into Darkness" on 500 IMAX 3D screens in front of Warners' "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" starting December 14th.

Like 'Knight', several sequences of the film were shot using IMAX cameras, including this opening piece. While "The Dark Knight" and "The Dark Knight Rises" previewed their opening sequences in IMAX before, this will mark the first time exclusive footage has played in IMAX 3D.

4 48fps cinemas within 15 minutes of my house. Damn I love living near a big city at times like this.

Just to give everyone a heads up... Not all IMAX 3D theaters will be playing it in 48fps. Some will have it at 24fps. Make sure

Re: The Hobbit

For some reason I haven't been following the development of this, like I did with The Lord of the Rings. Hell, I didn't even know it was now three movies until a few weeks ago. Last I had heard, it was 2. It doesn't really seem like the story that needs 3 movies to tell. It's been a long while since I've read The Hobbit, but I don't recall it being as sweeping and epic as LotR. Are they shorter movies than the LotR films?

Anyway, it wasn't one of the movies at the top of my radar for this winter, but I went to see Skyfall tonight, and the trailer they played before it really got me jazzed to see it now. It looks REALLY fun!

Re: The Hobbit

^ FWIW, this story is a bit more light-hearted and than LOTR, and it is not as epic. Seems like they are unnecessarily expanding the story to ensure anything not still owned by Tolkien's estate is on film. I still anticipate it, but don't see it getting LOTR type attention. It's just not a story with the same depth.

They're expanding on the story by taking material from the LOTR appendices that takes place at the same time as The Hobbit, namely The Necromancer of Dol Guldur material.

There is also the possibility the films will be shorter than LOTR, but nothing's been announced regarding run times, aside from confirmation that there will be extended editions on home video.

The production team's been posting video blogs of the film's progress on Facebook. Here's the latest, video blog 9, which was just posted 8 hours ago:

If you're not in the know, The Hobbit has been shot in 3D at 48fps, double the normal framerate of 24fps. This higher framerate has been branded HFR (High Frame Rate) and will be screened in select theaters.
https://www.facebook.com/notes/peter...50222861171558

It also has had its sound mastered in Dolby Atmos, which will be available in select theaters as well.

You can find a list of theaters showing it in HFR 3D and/or Dolby Atmos here:

Re: The Hobbit

Jackson said the first Hobbit movie will be 2 hours 40 minutes. That's the shortest "Middle Earth" movie. I think Fellowship was 2 hours 50 or 55 minutes.

Correct, any True (70mm Film Based) IMAX theater is not capable of 48FPS, and it wouldn't shock me if many of the digital ones aren't capable either.

Hadn't heard that. Found the quote:
http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=35587
“It’s looking like it’s going to be about ten minutes shorter than Fellowship was," explains Jackson. "So it’s going to be officially our shortest Middle-earth yet. I mean, Fellowship was just under three hours and this is about 2 hours 40 minutes at the moment.”
From that quote, it doesn't sound like the running time was finalized, but it does give an idea of what the running time will be (possibly a little shorter or longer, but not by much).

FWIW, both Wikipedia and IMDB list the running time of FOTR theatrical as 178 minutes, which is 2 hours 58 minutes.

The digital LieMax screens are capable of 48fps but it requires an even more expensive upgrade then regular digital screens. Of all the digital imax screens in the DC, Maryland, Virginia area playing The Hobbit only two are listed as HFR 3D on imax.com.

Re: The Hobbit

People need to get off of that whole "The Hobbit wasn't that big of a book" notion. Jackson is not making a direct adaptation of the book. He's making a film that will tie to what already came before it, which is why it's being split into three films. It's also cool that a lot of material from the appendices is being added.

Not buying it. They're really stretching if these are going to be three hours each.

I dunno, man. I hear those appendices added a lot to that world. Never read the books to know either way.

Might need to dust off my books and finally read the appendices.
