won't be in this movie. He'll be in the second one (2013). If there are flashbacks, he'll no doubt be handled the way the same way they did with Gollum in FOTR

Agreed.

Spoiler:
Since Smaug is the end of the journey, he probably won't appear until the at least final half of the second movie. Unless, as some have suspected, the first movie will adapt the novel and the second movie will be some kind of "bridge" between the Hobbit and the LOTR trilogy, but I don't think they're going to do that.

I hope the Dwarves sings the "Chip the glasses and crack the plates!" song

Well, they definitely have the scene in there and the 1-1.5 second shot of it looked pretty rhythmic!

ANyhoo, I didn't really dig the trailer per sé (it didn't flow at all) but I did like the visuals and the song the Dwarves were singing.

I can also not see the trailer in Snake's original post, but I can see it in your quote of his post.

A nice surprise tonight! I like the continuity kept from the trilogy and the look of the dwarves. I can't believe that I still have to wait another year...

Looks exactly like LoTR, which is a good thing.

With that said, I'll see it, but I've always thought of The Hobbit as a dumbed-down LoTR

Brings back so many good memories. I can't believe FOTR came out 10 years ago. Sigh...

 The trailer looks great. It's good to see that Jackson has kept the humor and the singing from the book.

I'm not sure people unfamiliar with the book will get excited by the trailer though; it's not clear what the story is, and there's not much action.

So now a children's book is a dumbed-down adult's book.

The Hobbit was written first, as an actual children's book. LOTR came several years later as a loose sequel meant for an adult audience.

Re: The Hobbit

and?

It's still a "dumber" version of LoTR. I've never liked it that much, I never got why it's so beloved. The trilogy are all much better books.

At least when The Hobbit sidetracks, it's short.

Hate to be the wet blanket but the trailer didn't do much for me. It just looked like "more of the same", which I suppose it is, but I wasn't particularly impressed.

I do hope the tone stays whimsical and childlike between both movies though. The over-bloated ponderousness of the latter two LOTR movies brought the whole trilogy down.

You're not alone. Part of the reason I've been against a two-movie approach is because The Hobbit is so simple and straighforward that it would make for one very entertaining adventure flick. It barely even needs to be two hours long. Bloating it to two films is a bad idea.

But it's too late to worry about that. Hopefully these two films will at least be as entertaining as FOTR and nowhere near as bloated as ROTK.

Perhaps the first film will be the movie and the second film will be nothing but multiple endings? ;)

Kidding aside it's a great feeling that we will be visiting Middle Earth again.

Maybe Thats what most people want, more of the same.

I can only speak for myself, but I'd rather see something new and different. Doesn't mean they have to RADICALLY diverge from the LOTR "look and feel", but the trailer -- rather disappointingly and even somewhat mundane -- hit every beat with which people can feel familiarized and comfortable: Bag End, Hobbiton, the Ring, Gollum, "Prreeecccciiiooouusss", sweeping panoramic shots of proud warriors marching up a mountain, Elves, etc. It's all fine and dandy, but I lament for what Guillermo del Toro would have brought to the table: the same world, but a new vision.

"More of the same" is, much more often than not, a curse rather than a blessing.

Exactly. People can talk about making it different and having that Del Toro guy do whatever he does, but The Lord of the Rings is one of the most successful franchises of all time and is almost universally liked by movie-goers. It would be complete idiocy to do anything different. Jackson just making a 4th and 5th Lord of the Rings movie is perfect.

Never read any of the LOTR or Hobbit books. What is the story for this one, Bilbo going after the ring?

He stumbles upon the ring while on an adventure w/ Gandalf and some dwarves.
