I wonder if "The Unexpected Journey" is supposed to have a double meaning for fans of the book, like the second one is the unexpected journey for us. There and Back Again suggests the book will finish with the first movie. For all of the Del Toro fanboys, I think it's for the best he didn't direct. I read a lengthy article about him in the New Yorker and some of the designs and concepts he had would have seemed a bit out of sync with the version of Middle Earth Jackson made. I also think he is a great filmmaker and love his work, but I don't think he was right for this job.
PJ looks quite healthy in those photos. I wish I could get the motivation to lose weight like he did. |

Hmmm, I don't know if I like that. It's going to look too smooth, like video, and lack that magic quality. And, I'm skeptical of how seamlessly it can be converted to 24fps for "legacy" theaters and BD. They can't just drop every other frame; they'll have to process it somehow, like the reverse of that motion feature that 120hz displays have. I hope they can do it properly, because these movies will be expected to sit next to the traditionally filmed LOTR trilogy.
But maybe I'm overreacting and need to see it first. |

the FPS would be no issue if he decides to do it w/ a digital cam. Not sure how that processing works w/ film...from personal experience in working w/ film at high framerates and the necessity to take to down to the standard...it was a bitch. Granted..I'm just a kid in college but damnit...I hope to never do it again.

But maybe I'm overreacting and need to see it first. Going from 24fps to something bigger for tvs requires interpolation to stretch X things out into Y spaces. Going down is much easier. I, too, hope the new format doesn't drastically change the experience, but I can't see it as a bad thing any more than when we still shot movies on 35mm when we only had VHS to enjoy them at home. |

Why couldn't they drop every other frame? That's exactly what a 24fps camera does compared to a 48fps. The only way it might matter is after all the effects are done but even then it's basically the same thing.
I have no doubt it will look very impressive and lifelike. The traditionalist in me just wonders if I really want that from the movies. |

Yeah he's been thin for a little while now. When he first got thin I thought he looked sick...like a cancer patient or something. Maybe it was just because I was used to seeing him fat, but he just looked weird. He looks really good now.
On another, somewhat related topic, I finally caught The Devil's Backbone by del Toro a couple days ago. I still fail to see why the guy gets so much praise and why people would actually rather have him direct the Hobbit rather than Jackson. Don't get me wrong...it was good, but nothing even close to spectacular. I've now seen all of del Toro's movies except for Cronos. Pan's Labyrinth is great. Devil's Backbone is good. Mimic, Blade 2 and both Hellboy's are downright rotten. Explain to me how this guy is much different than M. Night Shamalamadingdong. I know it's different strokes for different folks but I took the advice of people here and checked out both The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth and I agree that Pan's Labyrinth is a great movie, but I would NEVER rush out to see a del Toro movie and, as a fan of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, I'm thrilled that Jackson is directing and not del Toro. Back on topic although it sounded cool to have del Toro direct the Hobbit, it does make more sense to have Jackson return to helm this project |

I read the books just before the films (I had read The Hobbit previous and seem to remember seeing the cartoon when I was young), but I spent a good deal of my teenage years obsessed with all things Lord of the Rings. |
