Woo. Impressive take for the Simpsons. All but ensures a $60+ million opening weekend.

Maybe we'll get more movies out of it, too.

Looking at the other films, Transformers, Ratatouille, and Die Hard 4 are all holding very well.

Is a $70 million weekend pretty much guaranteed for the Simpsons?

Huge fan but even I didn't expect it to open this big. Maybe more movies could be on the way.

^^^ Well in a way I hope that ends up happening.

Does anyone else think the repeat episodes of The Simpsons on sunday will see higher ratings?

Great news for the Simpsons. Assuming the show runs thru season 20, a movie to end it all a few yrs after (4+ yrs from now) would be perfect imo.

Now we'll see if season 19 suffers at all from the movie production, hopefully not.

Pretty amazing, according to boxofficeguru other than the two Shrek sequels it's the biggest animation opening EVER:

"The PG-13 comedy enjoyed the third largest debut ever for an animated film trailing only Shrek the Third and Shrek 2 which bowed to $121.6M and $108M, respectively."

Amazing.

Woohoo, I'm very happy about that opening weekend total.

I still don't quite understand why so many people, even those in the film industry, doubted that The Simpsons Movie would open in a big way. Yes, I've heard all of the reasons given for thinking like that, but it still never made much sense to me. To me it was a total no-brainer that this would be a major hit.

" Excellent. Simpsons Movie Draws in $168M Worldwide
Source: Box Office Mojo
July 29, 2007

20th Century Fox's The Simpsons Movie exceeded expectations, earning an estimated $71.85 million from 3,922 theaters domestically to dominate the weekend box office. The animated-comedy, which cost about $75 million to make, marks the big screen debut of the characters from the long running series. The series' 19th season will premiere in the fall. The studio had expected the movie to open in the $40 million range. Internationally, The Simpsons Movie earned $96 million from 71 markets."

I think $168 million in 3 days pretty much guarantees at least one sequel.

Doesn't really work that way. The Simpsons is a top performer in the coveted 18-49 demo TV execs love and though ratings are lower than in the past, it's pretty much the only thing holding sunday night together for FOX (family guy also does well). The fact that they can also do movies with old show-writers who aren't working on the current season also is a plus. I don't think the simpsons is going anywhere anytime soon in terms of new episodes. It's the talent that does the voices who would be quicker to leave than FOX.

If anything, I imagine another movie being put in the works quickly.
