Overrated - Forrest Gump

Underrated - Pulp Fiction

I say this because Gump beat Pulp for best picture. Such a crime.

Overrated - Dances with Wolves

Underrated - Goodfellas

Same reason.

I'd rather say:

Overrated: Forrest Gump
Underrated: the Shawshank Redemption

for your very reason.

Instead, everyone seems to be thrilled with Transformers, a movie I thought was a poorly written and edited, incoherently directed bit of ego-massage as Bay acted as if he was "dumbing down" his already dumb schtick to please the masses. Chop 30 minutes, zoom out during the fights, and remove the annoying, Jar Jar Binks-level chittering robot comic relief and you might have something. And, sorry to say it, lose Megan Fox for a different hottie with at least some remote shred of personality or you might as well just use her Maxim cover as a stand-in.
I agree with every goddamn word!

My picks:

Overrated:
(as much as I like them) the films of Martin Scorsese.

Underrated:
The films of John Huston.

Uh, there seems to be a gap in logic regarding your choices. Unless of course, you mean Tarantino directed films.

Ugh. Don't remind me. Duvall turns in such a horrible performance that she almost single handedly turns a near masterpiece into almost unwatchable every time she's one screen.

The scene where she's running through the halls with that giant knife turns what should be a frightening sequence into a candidate for the most unintentionally funny scene ever.

It's no wonder Kubrick had such a difficult time with her during filming.

Ok, I was equating Independence Day as being highly rated since it was a blockbuster hit. Not necessarily the same thing.

I think it is a very good film, featuring Marilyn Monroe's finest dramatic performance. The Misfits enjoys a rather lofty reputation, due in no small part to the morbid mystique surrounding the final appearances of Monroe and Clark Gable, as well as the film being one of Montgomery Clift's final starring roles. What I find grating and forced about the film is the attempt by Arthur Miller to turn the Monroe character into some kind of idealized, almost mythological saint - there is no end of flowery, laudatory dialogue from Gable and Wallach heaped upon her, and it grows tiresome after a while. Most of the films I labeled as overrated I still hold a positive opinion of.

How can a film that is considered the best film ever and IS the best film ever be overrated?

Instead of "playing along" you should have looked up "overrated" in the dictionary.
