25. Diehard 2
Swap this with Die Hard with a Vengeance like mentioned here and we have a deal.
23. The Road Warrior
Too far down, one of the few sequels i can say with sure-fire confidence that improves on the original in every way, the only other sequel that does the same on this list is Empire.
21. Return Of The Jedi
For being the weakest of the OT, this still has every reason to be on here. Props for its addition.
14. Evil Dead II
If this is here, Army of Darkness should to. Equal if not better than II. Ash's AoD portrayal is so honed.
10. Bride of Frankenstein
It was ok, but i still like the original more. Dr. Frankenstein is mellowed out here.
8. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
About as scary as a donut. Goofy, hokey, tired. Joke villains, annoying sidekick, bland locales. I miss the badass Indy from the 1st two.
6. Terminator 2: Judgement Day
I've preferred the 1st one over this effects-vehicle.
3. Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Fellowship is the only LOTR movie i liked, dark helpless tone, more character-driven, the great Sean Bean. The sequels did nothing for me and became a game of World of Warcraft.

Is Drunken Master II (aka Legend of Drunken Master) considered a sequel, or just another movie featuring the same lead character? If the former, I'd throw it somewhere on the list.

And I don't think that the Lord of the Rings films should have been included but other than that I mostly agree with this list.

I also find Back to the Future 2 to be as good as the first one. It has just as deep a storyline, if not more as the original, and it's not hard to follow at all.
The only problem with it, is that you definitely have to have seen the original to know what is going on. It can't stand on its own.

Props for including Before Sunset, the type of movie that's often overlooked in these sorts of lists. It's the rare sequel that not only stands on its own but actually enhances the original.

slightly off topic: whenever I hear a critic complain a movie is too hard to follow, I rarely ever find the movie to be that way. Those types of criticisms towards a movie usually confuse me and wonder if they have the mental capacity to follow a movie for any length of time

I think "Empire" is the best sequel ever.

It's definitely a tie with "The Godfather Part II" (IMO) as the best sequel ever. Saw this on Showtime and it was advertised as 5.1 surround sound, but I thought the sound was terrible. The picture is great though. Brings back great memories when I first saw this at a sold out showing at midnight, the weekend it opened.
Brack, what other movies would you say are great sequels?

Yeah, I'd have to see The Godfather Part II again before I can consider it. I don't think it's as tight a movie as the original (I didn't think the flashbacks meshed as well as intended, and slowed the movie down, or maybe I'm just missing something), but good nonetheless.
I think that list is pretty good (for once). I personally love Toy Story 2, Spider-Man 2, Terminator 2, Superman II, Star Trek II-IV, Indiana Jones sequels, Mad Max sequels, Aliens, Lethal Weapon 2, The Bourne Sequels, and Before Sunset.

I give Empire the nod over Godfather II, only because it is the only sequel I have in my collection that is as good or better then the original. Godfather I is better then Godfather II, IMO, as I love the DeNiro parts, and I wish the whole damn movie was a flashback, as I find the Pacino parts good, but not great. Empire just rocks from start to finish and takes everything great about the Original Star Wars, and just one-ups it.

The one that strongly deserves to be there, IMHO, is The Color of Money.
