Blade Runner: Final Cut (LA/NYC: October 5th)

It's been announced nearly everywhere on the web in regards to the deluxe DVD/HiDef editions streeting in December - but for Warner's to only release this in two cities New York City and LA smacks of utter elitism. I have yet to read which theatres are showcasing the new cut and if it's 35mm or DLP (I'd assume it's the latter). But come on, I am already planning on trekking up to NYC to see the only East Coast theatrical engagement, but I wish Warner's was little more aggressive and giving more city and the film's fans the priviledge of seeing this new cut in the best and most ideal way - on a large screen... oh well. (shrugs)

It isn't uncommon for a movie to start there, but if those are the only places its playing, period, thats lame.

It's confirmed that it will only be there? I figured when it was advertised on TV that it meant it would be everywhere, otherwise that was big waste of money.

as I pointed out before I assume Warner Bros. will distribute this in DLP and not the more costly production and distribution of 35mm prints (I'm sure that striking only two 35mm prints for LA and NYC is considered a priviledge) - if that's really the case WB is really being stingy and assholish - DLP is common place in alot of cities, reglulating this to only two markets is extremely unfair if you ask me. Warner Bros. would have better luck in booking the largest theatres in the major cities that have DLP units. Or if it is indeed 35mm: rolling out it week by week, city to city :

New York City - Ziegfeld
Los Angeles - Arclight Dome
Seattle - Cinerama

DC's key theatre, the Uptown, unfortunately doesn't have a DLP system, nor does Baltimore's Senator Theatre.

I don't know what Chicago's premier theatre is - ?? The Music Box?

what other theatres/cities I am missing here

I thought part of the film process was to actual make a profit and as much exposure to the masses as possible. Apparently Warner Bros. thinks otherwise and feels indebted to have it's fans experience the film in their own homes.

I wonder how long it will play. I'll be in LA October 18-21 and would love to catch this.

I still don't get what you are saying Giles, did you see a statement that this will only be in those two cities?

Maybe you should think about moving to a real city if yours keeps getting ignored.

Only cities that matter are LA and New York. Other cities only wish they could matter.

Other cities have better things to show than another version of a twenty-five year old movie.

I may catch this on DVD when it hits the $1 rack.

What about San Francisco? Always the redheaded stepchild of metropolitan cities...if they play Blade Runner there, I might venture out to the city and catch it.

Well, probably not. But it's nice to know that it's there.

Any word on whether the universe outside of the US might get a theatre run? Or will it be left for eager film club hosts to screen the DVD once it is available?

The Uptown hasnt been DC's "key" theater for awhile now. The sound quality is crap and the picture quality needs help.

I would much prefer if Blade Runner played at the Georgetown theater or the AFI Silver.

I seem to remember when Scott's DC of Alien came out a few years back it started only in NYC and LA for a few weeks then for one or two more weeks seeped into some more cities. I saw it personally at a regular Century theater in Portland back then.

You forgot to mention the Uptown's crap seats. When the theater was renovated back in the late 80's/early 90's, they added those incredibly uncomfortable chairs. Taking out at least 10 or so rows. Leaving you absolutely no leg room. I tried going there a few times after that because the screen is so massive, but just couldn't take those seats anymore. Everyone likes to cross their legs a few times while sitting at a movie. Now if someone tries, you can't help but knock the hell out of the person in front of you. Which is my number one movie theater pet peeve, seat kicking. So, buh-bye Uptown.

Another great DC area theater? The new AMC at Tysons. They have DLP there.

the one auditorium that has DLP at Tyson's is a rather small one. They need to intall a system in the larger Auditorium #3

Still a nice size theater though. Great stadium seats and killer sound. These are my new favorite theaters. I see everything there now.

given the pathetic screen/auditorium that Regal upgraded to DLP playback at their Rockville cineplex, Tyson's is definately roomy, plush and ideal

I saw this is 70mm in both 1991 and 1992 at the Cineplex Odeon in Houston and then sometime either in 1995 or 1996 in Dallas at Northpark. I will happily pay my $8 again to see it on the big screen if it comes to the area.

Have they ever officially announced which LA theater Blade Runner will play on Oct 5th?
Also, have they ever revealed whether it will later play in any other cities?
Finally, is there a good web site for this sort of Blade Runner updates?
Thanks!
