I saw Shrek 3 yesterday with my daughter. Was dissapointed and movie is definitely inferior to the first 2.The Eddie Murphy/Donkey character who was so funny in the first 2 was totally unfunny in this one.Even my daughter commented that the other 2 were better. The eye-popping cutting edge animation of the prequels was'nt carried over to this one either.Oh well we have Pirates 3 coming soon.

Saw it. Pretty much what everyone else is saying. This one just seemed to trade its jabs at pop culture for slapstick, prat fall, and toilet humor. It had its moments, but overall, quite forgettable. Also, if they do a Puss and Donkey buddy pic, it needs to be done as straight to video (even though I will admit this one had a lot of that kind of vibe about it).

The only parts of the movie that got any response from me at all were:
- King Harold "croaking" (that was dang funny)
- Snow White and the Forest Animals vs. The Tree Guards
- Sleeping Beauty passing out all the time
- The Queen disoriented and humming "Favorite Things" after taking out the second wall with her head
- Larry King as the voice of Doris
Didn't love it... didn't hate it. 2 out of 4 stars for me.

I found the first inspired and the second a little more cursory and by-the-numbers but very funny. This one was awful. A near pointless sequel that does nothing to advance the character's story besides a group of babies at the end.
Has there ever been a less appropriate use of a well-known song than playing "Live And Let Die" at an otherwise emotional funeral scene? Terrible decision, there.

I was going to bypass this but me and my g/f wanted to see something, and it seemed like the only good thing to see (I've seen almost everything out).
I liked the first, hated 2, and thought this one was better than 2 but just average at best. Some good jokes, I mean I did laugh more than a few times, but the baby angle was like an after thought to a more average revenge tale.
Pinociho and ginger bread man rule.
Average, I had no eally expectations b/c I'm not a big fan. I thought the "Merlin the Wizard" character sucked the life out of the middle.
Grade: C

I saw this tonight and I don't get why there seems to be so much hate for the movie. It made me laugh out loud a number of times, it was cute, and they really cut back on the number of cultural references which I think made it a better type of flick.
I really enjoyed the first two, but I didn't find too much more meat on the bone than what we see in this third one. I just want a few cute, laugh out loud moments, and a few twists on classic fairy tale characters, and for me all three deliver just that. Only with this third one, they didn't go as overboard on the cultural references as I feel they did with the first two. Looking back on all three of them, I think that this third one just might age better than the first two, simply because of the fact that they cut back on so many cultural references. Here are a few of the moments I laughed at in this one:

the animator's should do a short film on the twoon a side note, I saw the HBO first look special before seeing the film, and I felt it ruined the movie for me, too much was given away.

I wasn't a big fan of this one either. The returning characters were all sort of played out, and the new characters didn't add anything to make up for it. The story was a huge problem for me.
The first Shrek had "fairy tale turned on its head" thing going for it, and the second was at least a clever take on the 'romantic comedy' concept. But this one was just a mess of ideas that didn't tie together. Shrek's baby woes, the search for a new king, and Prince Charming's scheme all felt so disconnected from one another.
It's funny because I feel like this trilogy has played out in much the same way Mike Myer's other trilogy - Austin Powers - did. The first one was a comic surprise I didn't expect to like, the second one lacked a bit of the charm of the first but still managed to bring the funny, and the third felt flat with a huge drop off in charm and humor.

Liked the first 2 very much and just revisited them this past weekend.
This one was just crap. A few OK laughs, but I didn't care about anything that was happening to the characters. Just a total borefest.

They're a majority of animated films to come out in the past two years -- and all are better than Shrek the Third.
And Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and Curious George are two of the most underrated animated films of the past decade.

Dreadfull.
To elaborate I really liked the first two. I saw them again this past weekend before going to see 3 and for me they get a bit better with age. The first one especially holds up very well as an antifairy tale and as a very sweet love story. The laughs are surprising and still get you laughing while the characters are a real hoot.
The second one still has a very coherant plot as well as a very nice tale tied into the overall movie. At its heart it is a tale about finding where you belong and getting along with those that might not like you to begin with. Sure there were a lot of pop culture references but not nearly as many as I thought and they are all hilarious.
Basically both 1 and 2 were a tale with quite a bit of soul to it. Evey adult could relate to the situations that the main characters were going through and you did care about what happens to them. The comedy was fresh and unique as well. And the music selection for the first two was absolutely phenomenal and really lent itself well to the different scenes.
Now we get to three. No coherent plot. There were some genuinly funny moments but without a coherant plot or any kind of character development it just becomes run on scenes with gags. You care nothing for the characters. Even established characters aren't nearly as funny as they were before. The introduction of absolutely useless characters. The whole merlin/arthur/lancelot/high school plot should never have made it past the planning phase. It really slowed the movie down and took screen time away from characters we wanted to see. The plot of charming wanting to provide the villains with a happy ending was a good subplot but really should have been the main plot.
The whole snow white birds attacking trees bit was actually quite disturbing. As was the whole queen headbutting the wall in. Totally out of character and pointless lazy writing.
Basically it lacked everything the first two had; charm, wit, and heart.
A horrible dissapointment.
This is turning out to be a whole summer of disapointments. Now I'm really worried about Pirates.

Wow. I thought Meet the Robinsons was excruciating.

I'm not sure if Eric Idle was just joking around, but in an interview with the Toronto radio station Mix FM (with excerpts posted here ) he states that the use of the Monty Python jokes by the makers of Shrek the Third were done without their permission:
Eric: So many people love the coconut gag from Monty Python it's of course a radio joke and its been stolen patently by Shrek 3 I'm happy to say So we'll be able to sue their asses!
MIX: Go on
Eric: No, I mean it's like there it is in the first 30 seconds you go wait a minute, John [Cleese] and I are in this film and you steal our joke? Um, I don't know how the others are going to take to this I hope they (Dreamworks) cleared it with them and they also steal from Spamalot, you know
MIX: Don't you think they did that to pay homage to you?
Eric: Do you think if I stole your wallet that'd be homage to your money? you see they neglected to tell us so the first I saw it was in the premiere and I was SHOCKED my whole family went WHAT! How dare you! So I walked out calmed down and walked back in but I was shocked and I think if you steal peoples jokes, I don't think that's homage, I think that's theft.

Idle sure would look foolish if he's ever parodied or paid homage to something without paying royalties. Like say, I don't know -- I'll just pull something out of my hat completely at random -- say, the Beatles.

I finally saw this last night and enjoyed it. Not nearly as good as the first two, but it entertained me for an hour and a half. I can understand some of the complaints, but they weren't enough to sour me on the movie. The small theater was filled with some teenagers and families, and it got a decent amount of laughs throughout. It should have used another 15 minutes though to flesh out some things. I agree a lot with Brent L's opinion of it above.
I'm confused about the no coherent plot argument above though. I thought it was perfectly clear what was happening
I did miss the amount of action in the 2nd movie, as the return to the castle in this movie was fairly weak.
Gingerbread man's life flashing before his eyes was awesome.
As for the comparison to other animated movies... Open Season was one of the worst animated movies i've ever seen, and I didn't even finish watching it.
