Although I didn't dislike this movie, it pretty much follows the "part three" dilemma in a movie series. Everything has been established, said and done, and all this did was reiterate everything multiple times -- inner conflict, relationship problems, balancing a double-life, etc. After everything Peter and MJ went through in the first two movies, why are they always bickering about the same things? You would think they'd understand each other by this point. It reminds me of Karate Kid III when Daniel continually gave the cold shoulder to Mr. Miyagi despite his "father knows best" from the earlier installments.
And repeating a theme from Spidey 2, you have TWO sympathetic villains. At least I was satisfied with the Spidey/Harry Osborn relationship coming to a full circle; I felt this was going to happen early on.
I agree that Venom seemed thrown in as an afterthought. I felt that they could have shown his origin at the end, and the character was not seen again until the next movie (if they decide to do one), but no one likes loose ends/cliffhangers these days.
The movie was a little too long; there was too many little scenes that didn't add to much.

Saw it on Friday and the whole weekend i was amazed on how badly it sucked! It just felt so messy this film. Too much sappiness, too much talk, too much wierdness (Goth Pete was ridiculous, totally felt wierd seeing him like that, everyone at the theater i was in thought we were watching some kinda of spoof at that point).
Also, did Venom stick out his tongue atleast once? If so, i must have missed it. Instead of Spidey finding that black suit, he should have stumbled across a pink one, cuz he was totally gay!

Wow...this thread is pretty depressing. While I'm not reading through the whole thing for the risk of spoilers or anything, is it nearly as bad as X3? B/c that was a steaming pile of poo. I just can't stomach Spidey 3 being that bad...

I think X3 was FAR better than Spider-Man 3 but I am a much bigger fan of X-Men than Spider-Man.
I don't think Spider-Man 3 was bad, but there's some problems with it. Maybe it will seem better on dvd in the living room. Maybe not. One theater viewing was quite enough for me.

This movie suuucked. I came last night, cleaned the house, and while doing it (for two hours) picked apart this movie relentlessly in my brain. IT's awful for most of the reasons people give here. There was not a lot good about it. It was like a jumble of sloppiness. I could hardly keep track of all the different story lines and the acting was awful. I really hope this is the last one if this is the kind of quality they're going to continue to spew out.
ps- Did anybody else feel like they were watching a Power Rangers movie during that whole Giant Sandman end scene??

I liked the movie but it could have been much better. They should have completely cut venom or sandman. If it was up to me I would have had him in the black suit up until the very end and setup venom for 4.
They really didn't do venom right at all. Didn't show the insanity. Didn't show how he always talks about himself as two beings. Only show the ability to change into the spider suit but he can change into any type of clothing and he can change into anyone. They never even showed how venom isn't picked up by the spidy sense.

I agree Venom needed more screen time. Which is why I thought Sandman should have been the third wheel, just an extra villain thug tacked on as a one dimensional character to add some extra tension for some of the battle scenes. Wasting time on his back story took away from what could have been some great Venom footage.
Of course, the entire crew went in thinking this was their last movie, so I can't say I blame them for not wanting to set up Venom for the next movie that they may not even be involved in.

Pretty much sums of what I thought of it. One big problem was Spidey was unmasked wayyyyyy to much, it almost felt like a big F-U to the audience who wanted to see more of him. Even my son felt that was a disappointment that in a lot of the battles he was not wearing his mask, to him then it was not really Spider-man. To me that makes sense, for the character you want to see him in full costume and not see his face.
Well they got the record for the opening it will be really intersting to see how well it does after that. Even with some huge drops it will be almost impossible for it not to make at least 300 mil. No real competition next week either...

If you don't care about the story built up from the first two movies then I can see liking Spider-Man 3. The actual Spider-Man scenes were good so if that's what you came to see then the movie delivered.
It's the Peter Parker and character development scenes where the movie fell flat on its face. Those scenes left a bad taste in my mouth and ruined the mood to the point where I didn't enjoy the action sequences as much as I normally would have.
It wouldn't have been so bad if they crammed a bunch of villains in and just went with a style and fun over substance kind of thing. Instead they tried for substance and failed miserably, which IMO was much worse then not having substance it all.
Edit- They also really failed at the comedy this time as well. The other movies really walked a fine line with regards to the sillier comedy relief. Raindrops keep falling on my head, the SM2 elevator scene, BoneSaw, all of the Bruce cameos, etc. are good example of this kind of humor. Spider-Man 3 hit the right notes with the Bruce cameo and milk and cookies scene, most of the rest was BAD.

It seems this movie sucks in people's mind the way the STAR WARS episodes 1,2,3 sucked to their fan base. A movie like NACHO LIBRE is a suck movie not SPIDER-MAN 3 and GODFATHER 3 ruins the first two movies but it is not a suck movie.

Ridiculous. Comparing this movie to Batman and Robin, Catwoman, Superman IV, etc. and Peter to Jar-Jar Binks is such absurd hyperbole. I can't think of one single second of Spider-Man 3 that is nearly as bad as the cinematic abortions that are the above movies. Some of you may not like Spider-Man 3, but if you think it's going to go down in history as one of those "truly awful" movies, well, you're living in a dreamland. I hated X-Men 3 with a passion. I thought it completely betrayed the characters, the fans, and everything Bryan Singer worked for. Do I for one minute think it's comparable to Batman & Robin? No. And Spider-Man 3 is far, far better than X-Men 3 was.

3: The GG2. Terrible outfit design, just terrible. Still, I am willing to forgive that, if not for the fact that we spend half the movie with Harry havin' amenisa, so the friggin' GG2 isn't really a villain in this film. Sure, he is for oh a whopping two or three scenes, but that is it.
4: Cornball one liners and the cheese. I don't need kids goin', "wicked cool!" or "film's extra" in the middle of dramatic scenes. It kills any tension what so ever. And don't even get me started on Emo-Parker. Rami had no idea what the alien would do to Peter and it showed.
5: It's all one big quinky-dink. This whole film was tied together by conidence.
(1) The metor just so happens to crash next to Peter...Go figure.
(2) Marko Flint just so happens to run into a partical machine - that just so happens to be about to start up, as he falls in .
(3) We have a butler that we never seen, to turn Harry around. Out of nowhere, this man confesses about Norman. If he loved Harry so much, why didn't he tell him before he got knocked in the head? Before got he got carried away and ended up lookin' like Two-Face?
(4) It just so happens Gwen Stacy is Peter's lab partner. She is also the daughter of the chief of police, who decides that Flint Marko was in on Uncle Ben's death. She's also the girlfriend of Eddie brock. And if that wasn't enough, she just so happened to be modeling where a crane was goin' to hit and be the only one who Spidey saved........ Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh..........Whatever.
(5) It just so happens that Eddie Brock is in the same church as Peter, when Peter decides this black suit has to go. So, of course he gets it.. Great!
It's this kind of stuff that I don't see how anyone can look past. Then you get into scenes that just totally take the characters OUT OF character and it gets worse and worse.

Couldn't agree more, this guy should be writing reviews professionally.
This movie was a mess, and a huge disappointment. I loved SP2 and throughly enjoyed SP1. Most of the gripes I have, have been mentioned already so I won't go into my bloated review, but what a let down.

1. In SM1, Peter just HAPPENS to be at the exhibit with genetically enhanced (not radioactive. What the fuck?) spiders when one gets loose. Of course it was totally ham-handed that MJ noticed that one was missing. You don't think...oh, it's a crazy thought...that Peter would get bitten by one that escaped, did you? See, it's crap like that which really makes me wonder what the writers were thinking. He was just in the right place at the right time. And obviously anyone bitten by a GMO Spider would die of blood poisoning.
2. In SM2, Doc Ock just HAPPENS to show up to the exact same bank that Peter and Aunt May go to. So of course it creates a great hostage situation, so Doc Ock can kidnap Aunt May and put pressure on both Spider-man and Peter Parker. And doesn't anyone else think it's funny that Doc Ock would rob a bank that gives money to poor people like Aunt May?
And so on and so forth. It's shit like that really pulled me out of the movie.

Again, I agree totally. Venom not using "we" when talking, and how they didn't even use his creepy voice, they just kept switching between Eddie talking and Venom just shrieking. That totally takes precedence over the movie never explaining why Venom has Spider-man's powers, why he doesn't trigger his spider-sense, why the symbiote hates Spider-man, why Venom is stronger than Spider-man, and it totally uses the wrong reasons why Eddie Brock hates Peter Parker; I mean they totally skipped over the Sin-Eater storyline! Also, why Venom didn't just outright kill Mary Jane and Aunt May is still a total mystery. Lazy writers, if you ask me.
Yeah, and I really don't like how they didn't even have Harry high on LSD for most of the movie like he was in the comics. Damn they should have done what they did in the comics and just have Norman come back to life and then cycle through his memory/loss gain and his death/return cycle. Don't forget his in jail/out of jail cycle too. Those were great stories.
I miss great lines from the comics that were never in the movie. Spider-man NEVER ONCE goes "My spider-sense is tingling!!!". That right there is the crime of all crimes.
Also, they didn't even go in depth with the alien costume like they did in the comics, when really, nothing happened and Peter just had Mr. Fantastic help him get rid of it. Damn.
Yeah, the other two Spider-man movies felt much more natural and less coincidental. For example:

I for one agree. In fact, I think the next Spider-man villain should be the Chameleon. And if he's not a communist spy, i'm going to throw a total hissy fit.

Without needlessly writing a 1,000 essay piling on, I will keep it simple and just say I did not enjoy this movie on any level. I am a long time comic reader, but it didn't even bother me from that standpoint, it just wasn't a good movie, regardless. My two sons, who loved the first 2 movies, kept asking me "when can we go home". The only applause came when someone in the audience shouted "does this crappy movie ever end?!"
