Deathproof was heavily overrated

Loved the first death scene set piece but that was it

What do you mean, "overrated"? Most hated it.

Yep. I wonder if the hatred for DP has anything to do with not liking strong female characters? It's like, as long as Mike was a Girl killing bastard everyone's happy, but as soon as the girls stand up to him those same people suddenly lose interest in the movie. What's up with that.

I would have found it much more satisfying if Stuntman Mike hadn't turned into such a wuss and the girls still managed to kick his ass.

Kinda like if you're against Israel's policies you're an anti-semite? No, I just found the 2nd half lacking. Of course, I must just not be "getting" the Grindhouse thing. :grumble:

Didn't hate the film, it just wasn't as good as I expected.

see I took it more for the girls had his number completely from the start and it reduced him to being a wuss. He's never faced being outclassed before until now...he just got a big dose of reality. I don't think it took anything away from the girls...

atlantamoi 09-24-07 04:26 PM

Just saw Death Proof and found the whole thing very interesting. Both my wife and I were laughing like crazy when Stuntman was being bitch punched over and over. One of the funniest scenes I've ever seen.

I think it has to do with not liking female characters who are self absorbed and annoying and who converse unlike real humans.

james2025a 09-25-07 01:21 PM

I got Death Proof the other day as a bland purchase and boy does that movie suck ass. Granted Kurt Russell is excellent.....but he is not in it enough. Too much shitty dialogue, shitty acting by all (other than Kurt), and the plot going absolutley nowhere. I have enjoyed most Tarantino movies (Jackie Brown was just so so, Four Rooms was plain crapolla), but this movie had no action and was a bit too full of itself to take the viewer anywhere. Also the sooner Tarantino realizes that he cannot act and keeps himself behind the camera the better. And as for Zoe Bell...well she might be a good stunt woman but please dear god keep her ugly mug off the screen in the future QT.

Exactly. There are many numbers of movies i love with string female leads (Aliens, La Femme Nikita anyone), but the problem with this movie is the female characters were just horrible. They talked bollocks, didn't do anything interesting and i was just waiting for them to be killed off. In the end i wanted Stuntman Mike to kill the 3 women so i didn't have to listen to anymore of there crap.

Original Desmond 09-25-07 02:15 PM

The problem with Deathproof is that it trying to be all 70s exploitation/sexploitation but didn't get nasty enough!

I would have loved to have seen some lesbian dildo rape, some politcally incorrect N word jokes, just stuff they used to get away with in the 70s in terms of bad taste and making you feel dirty watching it

We could all use more rape and racism! I'm kidding, I know what you mean, and I agree, but it's not just that an R-rating is way more strict now than it was in the 70s. Back then, an exploitation film could get a decent release without a rating. Now adays, there's no way you can get a wide release of a film that has those elements.

Suffering through the ceaseless prattle of the annoying chicks in this flick nearly turned me gay. Was this an homage to 70’s grindhouse…or simply a case of Tarantino spinning "Sex and the City"/"Desperate Housewives" a few rungs down the socio-economic ladder.

 ??? What? Either I'm getting too old or just not lame enough to understand where that came from or what the hell it even meant.

Rival11 09-29-07 10:50 AM

I mainly wanted to post and let you all know that if you're interested, the uncut version of Eli Roth's Faux Thanksgiving trailer is up on Rotten Tomatoes for viewing.

Now, I haven't seen the flick in full yet but If I had to bet, I'd say that was the best faux trailer out of the bunch.

Rendle 09-29-07 11:16 AM

Werewolf Women of the SS was my favorite, probably followed by Machete which might actually turn into a real movie.

astrochimp 10-01-07 05:18 PM

Ive finally seen both Death Proof and Planet Terror and now im actually happy they are separate dvd releases.Loved Planet Terror and hated Death Proof.

Original Desmond 10-02-07 05:41 AM

Planet Terror is exponentially better than Death Proof !

It rocked

Machete did look cool

DJLinus 10-22-07 11:47 AM

After blind buying and watching the DVDs for Planet Terror and Death Proof, I'm kicking myself even more for not seeing Grindhouse in the theater (with an audience, all of the trailers, and whatnot). Oh, well...

Same here, I F'd up - Just saw Planet Terror over the weekend and it's easily Rod's best flick. I mainly didn't go to theater because I'm not the biggest RR fan and I thought I wouldn't like PT - but yep, I f'd up and really should have gone.

As far as one being better than the other - I still like Death Proof more but Planet Terror is right up there.

From what I hear too......It won't be long before we get the full packaged deal for Grindhouse. "I know, I'll believe it when I see it" comes to mind but there has been a lot of talk about releasing it soon.............from what I hear ;)

The sooner the better. Once more people get to see Werewolf Women of the SS, the chances of re-releasing the Ilsa trilogy on DVD will be closer. -pray-

Figured I'd use this thread since I got good news about the original theatrical cut.

Picked up my Dish guide for March and found out some showtimes for the movies:

Grindhouse Presents: Planet Terror (Premier) Starz HD March 1st; 6:00pm
Grindhouse Presents: Death Proof (Premier) Starz HD March 8th; 6:00pm

And (Drumroll)

Grindhouse (3 hours, 11 minutes) March 30th; Starz HD

Julie Walker 02-15-08 06:57 PM

That's good to know, even though I don't have those movie channels now. But it bodes well for a future dvd release. And that is what i'm waiting for. :)

das Monkey 02-15-08 06:59 PM

Very cool. It won't be the same as in the theater, but it will still be fun to see it the right way again. Thanks for the info.

One of the few reasons I would want a cable box and why I would add Starz to my cable for the month. That's so badass.
