While the small changes in character to make them a boxing family was interesting, this Arrested Development adaptation isn't as funny as it could be, and they made Jason Bateman's character really boring, unmotivated and passive.

Bale will most definitely get a nomination and will most certainly win. But I hope Leo gets a nomination too at the very least. She was really good too. But Bale.....amazing performance. It was downright scary how much he dove into this performance.

I was definitely wrong. Bale seems nuttier than a fruit cake at times but he's an amazing actor. He did an awesome job in this movie and definitely deserves a nomination at the very least.
Overall I really liked the movie too. Although I love Amy Adams, her tough girl act got a little old but maybe that's just what the real person was like.

I watched this yesterday. It was better than I expected. I thought Christian Bale and Melissa Leo gave very good performances.

Arrested Development was a TV show about a "normal" man trying to keep his family's business, and family, together, despite their eccentricities and conflicting personalities. Jason Bateman played the main character, and his attempts to keep things going while his messed-up family keep getting in the way are the source of much of the show's humor.

Pretty good movie. Simple and pretty predictable but great performances all-around. Wahlberg is getting overlooked here, it seems. If anyone gets a chance to see the HBO crack documentary mentioned in the film it is definitely worth a look. I believe it can be found in its entirety on YouTube.

He was trying to be funny, but it didn't come off well.
I'm pretty sure that Arrested Development wasn't the first tv show or movie that had one "normal" guy dealing with a dysfunctional family, so I don't see any reason why The Fighter should be compared to Arrested Development.

Saw this tonight. I liked it a lot. Bale was excellent and I fell in love with Amy Adams and her potty mouth, lol.

I don't like to schmooze over actors, but Bale elevates this movie from average to very good. I didn't think the acting by Wahlberg was very good. The story didn't really draw me in like it should have, but Bale's performance is really the heart of the movie.

Finally watched this today, and enjoyed the heck out of it. Bale definitely elevates the movie from being a run of the mill sports movie to something a little bit more. He's always fantastic, and I hope he wins an Oscar for his role. I didn't care that much about Leo; I think it's because i've seen enough angry women with a Boston accent roles over the last few years that they're just annoying to me. I gotta say though, her and all the sisters sure was a site to behold with the hair, clothes, and attitude.

Agreed. Bale and Amy Adams definitely elevated the material. Hell even Jack McGee (does he ever play a non-Boston or NYC native?) was good. Wahlberg looked the part, and the fight scenes were well done, but after watching it, I thought "Wait...what did he actually DO?" It seemed like everybody was acting "around" him. Maybe acting circles around him...

Well, he was the token Irish-American in Crash. He ran the gun shop in LA.
This role was such a gift to him! He's always been good, but he's always been given such small roles. Here he got to play a meaty role, and gave the best laugh in the film (when he sees the catfight).
I see on his IMDb page that he was an NYC firefighter, too - certainly makes sense that he's on Rescue Me, then. Funny that Micky's dad and coach are played by a former firefighter and cop.

I saw the movie 2 weeks ago and the pack of sisters still give me nightmares, what a frightning image.

There was more humor than I expected and that turned out to be a good thing. ("MTV Girl" could certainly apply today thanks to Jersey Shore)
And it was nice to finally clear up the confusion I always had with "Micky" and "Mickey".

So, I'm watching this and about to turn it off. It's just flat out an ugly movie. The montages every 5 minutes don't help either. Yes, Bale is great but everyone aside from Ward is unlikeable... and I don't mean that as a compliment. It's just an ugly picture. Does it get better?
