There was some thought that maybe Superman would show up in a Shazam movie as a mentor. Could make for an interesting fight down the line as teacher goes against student. Sadly, thanks to BvS, Warner probably will run away from such a story.

‘Shazam!’ Adds ‘Annabelle 2’ Cinematographer and Production Designer
omegaunderground.com/2017/10/19/shazam-adds-annabelle-2-cinematographer-production-designer/
Could change the title to: Shazam (2019, D: David F. Sandberg)
New Line Cinema and director David F. Sandberg will begin filming their Shazam! movie (aka Franklin) confirmed to begin shooting on February 5th in Toronto, and we’ve learned some major crew hirings for the DC Comics film ahead of casting announcements.
The studio has hired two Annabelle: Creation alum who previously worked with Sandberg on the successful horror film. They include horror veterans cinematographer Maxime Alexandre (The Nun, High Tension) and production designer Jennifer Spence (Paranormal Activity 2-4, The Nun, Insidious 1-3, Lights Out, The Lords of Salem).
We’ve previously revealed a string of audition tapes for the roles of Billy Batson, Shazam!, and Freddy Freeman/Shazam Jr.
There is enough evidence that the film’s setting will be the real-world city of Philadelphia (where Billy resides in the comics) and the film’s villains could be The Seven Deadly Sins.
Batman and Superman also are established heroes in this cinematic universe via the Freddy audition tape.
Shazam! shoots February-May of next year and its release date has been slated for April 5th, 2019.

They haven't cast him yet. Wouldn't surprise me if he's a relative unknown.

So I don’t know Shazam. I think my dad liked him. Who would you pick to play him? Wait, I thought Rock was Shazam? or is he bad guy? What’s Black Adam?

Rock is playing Black Adam but isn't in this movie. There were rumors of him getting his own movie or even being the villain in a Superman film.

DC's 'Shazam!' to Star Zachary Levi (Exclusive)
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hea...c-hero-1049616
Zachary Levi is going to be Earth's mightiest mortal.
The actor will star in the DC comic book adaptation Shazam!, which follows a boy named Billy Batson, who can transform into an adult superhero by uttering the magic word "Shazam!" The name is an acronym of the ancient world gods and historical figures Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury, from which the big Batson derives his heroic attributes when in adult form.

And he has that child-like persona that works for the character.

So was Paul Rudd for Ant-Man but that seemed to work out.
Edit: Also, as some have pointed out online, Chris Pratt. Prior to Guardians, he was on Everwood and Parks and Recreation.

According to John Campea, he apparently has for the past few months (guess he's seen in person and does look buff). He wasn't entirely sure it was for this part, but it wouldn't be surprising if he has been cast for a while and it just got out now.

BTW, I'm calling for the casting of Tom Hanks as Wizard Shazam who has grown old and needs a successor and chooses Billy Batson.

Captain Marvel and Shazam are one and the same (for DC anyway).
Here's the history I found on Wikipedia:
Funny enough, Marvel's Captain Marvel comes out one month before DC's Shazam.
Here's the history I found on Wikipedia:
DC Comics revival: Shazam!
When superhero comics became popular again in the mid-1960s in what is now called the "Silver Age of Comic Books", Fawcett was unable to revive Captain Marvel, having agreed to never publish the character again as part of their 1953 settlement. Looking for new properties to introduce to the DC Comics line, DC publisher Carmine Infantino decided to bring the Captain Marvel property back into print, and in 1972 he licensed the characters from Fawcett.[27] Because Marvel Comics had by this time established Captain Marvel as a comic book trademark for their own character, created and first published in 1967, DC published their book under the name Shazam! Infantino attempted to give the Shazam! book the subtitle The Original Captain Marvel, but a cease and desist letter from Marvel Comics forced them to change the subtitle to The World's Mightiest Mortal, starting with Shazam! #15 (December 1974).[27] As all subsequent toys and other merchandise featuring the character have also been required to use the "Shazam!" label with little to no mention of the name "Captain Marvel", the title became so linked to Captain Marvel that many people took to identifying the character as "Shazam" instead of "Captain Marvel".
