Re: Total Recall
Verhoeven pretty much confirmed on the commentary that it's all a dream. That's why he had the last shot fade to white instead of black, signifying Quaid being lobotomized back at Rekall. All his words.

Re: Total Recall
Didn't he also confirmed that the scripted but never produced sequel was based on Philip K. Dick's Minority Report and would feature Quaid's further adventures on Mars? If he was truly labotomized, Verhoven's intent to make a sequel with the same lead character makes little to no sense.

Re: Total Recall
I think it does because it's retrocon of what the intent was. If they knew that a sequel was possible, they wouldn't have entertained the idea of him being lobotomized.
I do wish we had gotten that sequel, sounded like a neat idea.

"Get your ass to Mars"
"If I'm not me, who da hell am I?"
"Consider dis a dah-vorce"

IMO it shows its a dream at the end but Hauser's memory was erased to create "Doug Quaid"

Re: Total Recall
EXCLUSIVE: Colin Farrell Is Frontrunner for 'Total Recall' Lead
October 21 by Borys Kit & Jay A. Fernandez
Total Recall is narrowing in on finding the star that will step into the shoes first worn by Arnold Schwarzennegar in the 1990 movie.
Colin Farrell is at the top of the list, which also includes Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender.
No offers have been made for anyone to star in the movie, which is looking at a late March start with Len Wiseman behind the camera and Neal Moritz and his Original Film banner producing.
The studio is contemporizing its adaptation of the original 1990 movie, which was based on a Philip K. Dick story, "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale." It followed a man haunted by a recurring dream of journeying to Mars who buys a literal dream vacation from a company called Rekall Inc., which sells implanted memories. The man comes to believe he is a secret agent and ends up on a Martian colony, where he fights to overthrow a despotic ruler controlling the production of air.
One big question is how the new movie, with a script by Kurt Wimmer, will tackle one of Dick's favorite topics, reality vs. delusion, with audiences never knowing whether or not the movie was a dream. Christopher Nolan just reinvigorated the concept with the detailed dreamscapes he built into Inception.
But a bigger question is whether the actors the studio is keen on are available?
Farrell just might be, although the Irish actor will likely star alongside Eric Bana in Sheldon Turner's crime drama By Virtue Fall, which will shoot in January. He would be finished in time to jump right into Recall.
By Virtue Fall, which Turner wrote, centers on a federal agent framed by his mentor. After a stint in prison, he seeks revenge on his former partner, who has flourished in his new life.
The dealmaking took months, with Farrell dancing in and out of the picture and rumours swirling that Jeremy Renner would step in. In the meantime, Hurt Locker backer Voltage Pictures dropped out as financier. The pic, being produced by Turner and Jennifer Klein, is in the process of picking up new money, and is heading toward a shoot in the new year.
If Farrell does head to Mars, it will be his second shot at a high-profile Hollywood career. Since appearing in studio movies such as Daredevil, S.W.A.T., Miami Vice and Alexander, the actor has lately been sticking to lower budgeted homegrown fare. But he recently wrapped DreamWorks' 3D remake of Fright Night, in which he plays the villainous vampire, as well as New Line's Horrible Bosses, in which he plays one of the jeffes in question. Those roles can be seen as priming him up for a nice return to heroic form, with a tentpole like Recall jumping it to the next level.
Hardy, meanwhile, has found his dance card filling up ever since appearing in Nolan’s Inception. The English actor is currently in Vancouver shooting This Means War, the McG-directed movie which stars Chris Pine and Reese Witherspoon. In addition, his 2011 is already packed. He is said to be reteaming with Nolan for the filmmaker’s third Batman movie, which shoots in the spring and summer. In the fall, Hardy will star in Fury Road, the most recent Mad Max movie.
Fassbender, another rising star thanks to his turn in Inglorious Basterds, is in pre-production on Shame, an indie being directed by Steve McQueen, and is also shooting X-Men: First Class in England. While he has several projects vying for his attention, rumors are swirling that he may take part in Peter Jackson’s two-movie adaptation of The Hobbit. If that is to occur, depending on scheduling, Hobbit could take him out of the equation for Total Recall, even if the two movies don’t shoot in New Zealand (the location of the filming is still up in the air as New Line and Jackson deal with a labor dispute).

I love the part where he uses the Hologram Quaid to trick the bad guys a few times, then he jumps out in front of them.
"HAHAHAHA! You think this is the real Quaid?"
*Bad Guys lower their guns*
"IT IS!"
*Quaid shoots them*

It's interesting how some movies look completely of their time, but others look slick enough to fit in with other movies, years later. Total Recall look totally 1990.

Dr. Lull: [after Quaid goes crazy at Rekall] Listen to me, he's been going on and on about Mars. He's really been there.
Bob McClane: Use your head, you dumb bitch! He's just acting out the secret agent portion of his Ego Trip.
Dr. Lull: I'm afraid that's not possible.
Bob McClane: Why not?
Dr. Lull: Because we haven't implanted it yet!
not liking this remake news. they should just leave well enough alone.

Arnie: Anywhere just go! Go!

Arnie: Sheeeeeeeet! Sheeeeeeeeet!

Arnie: [Quaid rips the Johnnycab out and starts to drive himself] Aaahhh!

Re: Total Recall
unfortunately like Robocop the more extreme gore got clipped for it's R-rating, I'd love to see the full unrated cut notably for the escalator scene which got the most truncated - sadly I don't think the excised scenes exist anymore, it hit the cutting room floor and got thrown out with the trash.

For Total Recall... When I was younger, I liked to think the whole thing is real. The idea that it was all fake just wasn't acceptable to me. Now, I believe that Ahnuld went to recall and everything shown was there to trick his mind into believing the adventure. Otherwise, he'd have a lucid awareness that he's sitting at Recall. It was just part of the program.

The Japanese are soooo weird. Yet...I love some of the shit they have.

This moment and the drug factory scene are my favorite Robocop moments. The aftermath of his fight is sooo sad to me. As a little kid...I remember crying and yelling about why they were shooting at Robocop. Fuck...I was 3 years old when I first saw Robocop. Nothing in terms of gore or violence has shaken me (at least too much) because this film topped them all for the most part. I think maybe Fight Club (when Ed Norton beats the crap out of Angel Face) and Irreversible (when they beat the crap out of that guy w/ the extinguisher...*shudder*) have disturbed me a bit...they're really well made...and not at all far fetched as to the effects of the violence upon those characters. That bit of real...that's when it's disturbing.

Re: Total Recall
It was 1989, August I think..maybe September. My cousins were playing w/ me we went to see the TV and Robocop was on. Also...let me add. My cousins were girls, who at no point in their history from that moment or even before have shown an interest in films like that....well the movie was on. It was during the chase were Murphy and Alice are chasing Clarence and his men...and THEN the whole hand scene. It didn't scare me...I honestly didn't know wtf I was watching. I didn't even know hands could be seperated from the body at that age...little did I know what...well...Predators can slice off arms as well a couple years later. We kept watching. I liked Robocop, he's a good guy..and a robot...and a cop. Loved seeing him fight ED209, cried seeing Robo get shot up...cuz..well...he's the good guy. Why are the cops shooting the good guy?! And all the way to the end...I was fine.
To this day my cousins honestly don't know why we watched that...or even let me watch it. Either way...I've loved the movie since.
