I liked the original, and the talent involved in this one is pretty impressive so I'm looking forward to it.

NPR's Fresh Air had a good interview with Peter Fonda on August 16th (Peter Fonda plays the bounty hunter hunting down the outlaw played by Russel Crow).

Sounds like it will be a good show.

Sneak Preview this weekend (Sunday)
Early Reviews:
"James Mangold’s movies include Cop Land (1997), Girl, Interrupted (1999), and Walk the Line (2005), and this is by far his most sustained and evocative work."
New Yorker David Denby
A- "Combining a taut classic tale, intriguing characters, precise mis-en-scene, and superlative acting by Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, this is Mangold's most accomplished work to date, a remake that for a change is as good as Delmer Daves' original."
EmanuelLevy.Com Emanuel Levy
"Reinforced by a strong central premise, James Mangold's remake walks a fine line in retaining many of the original's qualities while smartly shaking things up a bit."
Variety Todd McCarthy
"James Mangold's expanded take on 3:10 to Yuma makes for a largely compelling ride on the strength of a powerful cast led by Russell Crowe and Christian Bale."
Hollywood Reporter Michael Rechtshaffen

Which version (1957 or 2007) would you all think should be watched first?
I'll be seeing a sneak preview of the new version soon.
But I also have checked out of the library the 1957 version to compare.

Bale and Crowe..
IMO if the movie is poor it will not be because of the acting. IMO Bale and Crowe are in the very top of the acting talent pool currently working. The Machinist starring Bale was a pretty simple story but Bale's acting and physical commitment to that movie was just stunning to me.

rating a solid 100% with 8 reviews in at RT. not...too...bad. i really love these updated westerns of late. "The Proposition", "Seraphim Falls", even "Dead Birds" was ok. i'm on board for 2 great actors in what looks to be a very solid movie.

Just got back from the sneak preview. Whie the movie has its faults, there was a lot to like and I think I will like this more and more as time goes by: it needs to sink in a bit.
My main problem was:
Everyone (Christian Bale, Crowe, Peter Fonda) put in some great performances.

Just got back from the sneak preview. Had a really good time with it, definitely one of the better movies I've seen this year. I'm not familiar with the original (or the Elmore Leonard story for that matter), so I can't really compare. But it's definitely a solid western. Not revisionist, or spahgetti, just a good old fashioned story with well-defined characters and some modern action flourishes.
I was a bit skeptical going in, since I haven't really been overwhelmed by any of Mangold's previous films (Walk the Line was OK, I guess, but Identity is a piece of shit). But I was quickly won over.
Bale and Crowe are both solid and a lot of the supporting performances are great as well. (Good to see Alan Tudyk.)

I get what you're saying. I don't think I wanted to get beaten over the head with it but I felt like once it started, it was easy to see why it snowballed. After all, there's the whole moment where Crowe
I'm just trying to think of why he started in the first place, and I can't recall a single point in the film, subtle or direct, that got that message across.
A minor quibble, overall.

A Very solid film. A Great start to the fall movie season. If anything, the script was amazing. Great arcs, great themes, and fully developed characters. Acting was superb all around.
Not much new one can do with the western genre, but with the above statements, Mangold crafted a damn fine film. Just a few little things that I won't spoil (don't know how to use or create a spoiler tag) that keeps it from a homer run, but its a triple for sure.
Grade: B+
