What happened to the Golden Globes discussion thread? -ptth-

I was very relieved The Departed only won for Best Director. I would have stopped watching the show for good if had won for Best Screenplay. -rolleyes- The only thing worse would have been Johnny Depp winning for his role in the terrible Dead Man's Chest.

Anyhow, only a week away from Oscar nominations. :)

I'm glad Babel won, it should have taken in Original Screenplay as well. I loved it as much as 21 Grams and Amores Perros and hated watching those films get the snub in their year.

The Departed winning for Best Picture would have been as uncreative as that film was. Give Scorcese the statue for Director, he's earned it, but not for The Departed.

The Golden Globes and the Academy Awards will one day regret the fact they didn't recognize The Fountain as much as they should have. Bastards.

Well, I finally caught up and saw Babel last night. I thought it was very good, but by no means great and definitely not Best Picture material. Whoever said it was this year's Crash is totally right. I can think of at least 5 other movies more deserving (Pan's Labyrinth, Children of Men, The Departed and United 93 to name a few). I really hope the Oscars differ greatly from the globes this year since the Globes were truly uninspired.

I forgot the ultimate outrage. The GGs probably thought it was a cute idea but I think giving the best-foreign-language film award to an American film is idiotic (Clint Eastwood's Letters from Iwo Jima), even if it shows the Japanese point of view in WWII. I'm sure they saw it as just another occasion to invite Clint Eastwood to their party.

To be fair, Letters from Iwo Jima was an America-Japanese co-production.

Going back to unfair, they had Mel Gibson's Disney movie, Apocalypto, nominated in the same category.

The IMDb lists it as a US film. The operative word here is "foreign language film", not "foreigh film". Same goes for Apocalypto, since Ancient Mayan is considered a "foreign language", as Aramaic was in The Passion of the Christ (not nominated for anything, thank God).

It was an ok show. No real surprises, cept for "Babel".
i loved that Martin Scorcese and Alec Baldwin got dues. they both had great years and even Baldwin's turn in "The Departed" was memorable, but damn if he isn't great on "30 Rock" .
Also, Sasha Baron Cohen's speech was one of the funniest things i've heard in a long time, probably equating to Steve Carell's last year.

Who cares! We're talking about Hollywood here, a place filled with the most pampered, self-indulgent people on the planet. Point to any actor and they likely would have balked as well. The important thing is he admitted he was wrong and he gave a hell of a performance.

Jennifer Hudson was fantastic as well, but most of her role was what she is, a singer. So Eddie gets the nod from me as the showstopper in that film.

I find it annoying how every year at these award shows, hollywood keeps kissing Jack Nicholson's ass! The camera is always on Jack. Everyone on stage keeps saying "I can't believe I'm looking at Jack!" "There's Jack!" "It's Jack!" Nicholson is a great actor, but come on...It's this constant ass kissing that let's a manic narcissistic guy like Nicholson think he has the right to bash a guy's windsheild in with a golf club!
