Even though The Departed lost, I still think it's the frontrunner. Luckily, the Hollywood Foreign Press have nothing to do with the Academy Awards.

GG annoys the hell out of me. What are half these movies that won?

I hope the right people take home wins at the Oscars.

And what's with Jennifer Hudson not thanking American Idol? No one would have any idea who she was if it wasn't for that show.

The GG like their image of being "not the Oscars", honouring the underdogs and doing things that Oscars would never do, like naming Babel film of the year (a shoddy piece of "misery porn" with no undestandable or decipherable message) and giving best director to Sorsese for yet another run-of-the-mill glorification of organized criminal activity (about the Irish, this time - just what the world needs), which the Oscars have never done (so far). I agree with Mirren's win for The Queen, though, which was pretty much a no-brainer, unless the prize required the winner to walk on water to get to the stage... And Sacha Baron Cohen's acceptance speech would not have been even possible at the Oscars. Meryl Streep for The Devil Wears Prada? She was fun to watch, as usual, and predictible, but the real breakthrough talent in that film was Emily Blunt. But it could have been much worse: they could have given something to Judi Dench just for showing up in a frock and matching shoes.

Yes, and since it's the Oscars, Dreamgirls will probably win best picture.

You know, I think the less said about that the better. From her IMDb bio:

Born Jennifer Kate Hudson on September 12, 1981, in Chicago, Illinois, she earned minor attention as one of the twelve finalists (she came in an underwhelming sixth runner-up) on the third season of the amazingly popular FOX reality/talent-search TV series in 2004. Prior to this Hudson grew up singing in gospel choirs. Her relative inexperience included acting in community theater productions, singing on cruise lines and touring for Disney in "Hercules: The Musical". Her naturally raw, soulful vocals had no formal musical training to speak of. Admittedly, the songs that tested her on the FOX talent show were frequently ill-advised but evidence of her greatness certainly peaked through. She, along with the other two African-American powerhouse singers Fantasia Barrino and La Toya London were the shows's own version of the Dreamgirls and were expected to be the final three when Jennifer was unceremoniously whittled out of the competition. Perhaps her plus size, lack of viewer popularity and her overly gospel style were out of sync with the "American Idol" image.
She got a raw deal from that show.

Sad, but true. It's one thing if "Babel" won over "The Departed". But "Dreamgirls" winning would be criminal.

And baracine, about Meryl Streep getting a nomination. She was "The Devil Wear's Prada". Sure, Emily Blunt was amazing. But this was Meryl's movie through and through. One of her best performances ever.

You're right, but lately it's become trendy for former contestants to dismiss the show. Even Taylor Hicks is distancing himself, and it's been less than a year since he won!

That IMDB bio is a laugh riot. Clearly written by her publicity department or a big fan. Who cares that she didn't win at this point? She got the exposure she needed, and has leveraged it into a career.

Yes, but she had done that particular performance many times before.

I agree with baracine here. Fuck American Idol. I know "the people" do the voting. But she was voted off that show way too soon.

Conventional Wisdom says: American Idol is the kind of show that would eliminate Aretha Franklin in the first round. (I think their prime directive is: No Fat Chicks.)

That particular performance? No. The closest were "She-Devil" and "Death Becomes Her". Neither of which she got a nomination for.

Then I prefer to think this prize was a delayed reaction to Death Becomes Her. (It's about time.)

Yes. Hudson was eliminated from American Idol due to racism. That explains why Aryan goddess Fantasia won that season.

Fantasia was wire-thin, so there was less of her on the stage at one time. And she didn't sing gospel. Besides, the whole South-East phone grid was down beyond repair by that time.

From Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Idol_(Season_3) ):

Controversy
Both Jennifer Hudson and LaToya London, part of the final twelve, were eliminated, despite their popularity. After London was eliminated, (Hudson was first) many believe that they were kicked off because of racism, despite the fact that a black woman beat a white woman in the final.

Exactly. She shouldn't have thanked "the people". She should've thanked the show, itself.

I just saw a small bit of the show, but what I did see was Eddie Murphy winning the best supporting actor award for Dreamgirls.

Did I hear him right in that he wasn't paid for the role? Or was that a joke?

Wire-thin? We talking about the same Fantasia? Sure, she's not plus size like Frenchie, but girlfriend is packing some junk in her trunk

Eddie Murphy may be really good in Dreamgirls but he didn't even want to do that movie.

Any one see him on Inside the Actor's Studio?

I think it was Katzenberg who had to convince him to do it because Murphy didn't want to do a movie where he didn't get paid a lot of money. He's demeanor was a real turn off. He seemed ALL about the money.

God forbid Eddie that you do something that is artistic and not for the money like The Haunted Mansion and Daddy Day Care.

Your picture was taken at the BET 2006 Awards (with Kanye West).

As she appeared on American Idol in 2002:
