I saw the Departed first and I thought it blew the original out of the water. Characters were developed better, plot points were fleshed out, the performances were far batter, there was more humour and better dialogue and it was overall more entertaining. The funny thing about Infernal Affairs is that no matter how much the directors of that film try to dismiss The Departed as "that american remake", Infernal Affairs feels much more "Hollywood" in its presentation.

Saw IA first and enjoyed IA more, it had better emotional impact. However, The Departed has the advantage in terms of dialogue and humor.

I saw IA first, but liked Departed better. The tension and paranoia was so much more palpable. Maybe if I saw the whole IA trilogy I'd feel different, but the characters in IA were difficult to empathize with.

Saw Infernal Affairs first and it was instantly in my top 5. Didn't like Departed as much (the end ruined it).

Re: The Departed Infernal Affairs Poll

I saw The Departed first, really liked DiCaprio's performance, but didn't like the overly obvious symbolism of the ending.

Heard alot about Infernal Affairs and was expecting it to be better. Although I liked it, I felt The Departed was much, much better.

Spoiler:
Like others have said, I think the performances in The Departed were much more developed. I felt for the character of Bill Costigan like when he's scared of being chopped up into little pieces and fed to the poor, his mental breakdown, etc.

The Departed was better for:

-Costigan and his boss's relationship. More father/son than IA.
-More emotion from DiCaprio whereas Tony Leung was a little too straight faced most of the time, especially in the roof top scene
-Nicholson seemed more unpredictable and intimidating than his counterpart in IA
-both roof top scenes in The Departed were more intense.

Infernal Affairs however had some better things going for it:

-Andy Lau's character was more relatable and not the typical bad guy, unlike Damon's character.
-The elevator death was better here.
-The gangsters death when he *maybe* suspects Leung is an undercover, was very different from The Departed, and shows a criminal who hesitates at the total commitment needed in his chosen profession.

Overall, IA was a great movie, but it was a little too subtely played, even for me, compared to the superior Departed. Both are gonna be added to my collection though.

Saw IA first, then watched The Departed. Didn't like it.

IA is easily one of my favorite films.

Re: The Departed Infernal Affairs Poll

I like them equally (I saw The Departed first). IA turned me into an Anthony Wong fan too. He really needs better roles, though.

The Departed feels more epic in scope while IA seems more intimate in the way it's shot.

For me, it's 2 sides of the same coin. I liked one more than the other for several reasons, many Brayzie pointed out. Don't see one being all out better than the other.

Like them both, but I didn't really like Nicholson's performance here; it just took me out of the flow a bit most times he appeared. So I give the edge to IA.

THE DEPARTED had Leonardo "furrowed brow" Di Caprio in it. Automatic deal-killer. Even if it had the best script in the world, it would have still been dead in the water for me as long as Di Caprio was in it.

Re: The Departed Infernal Affairs Poll

"The Departed' is the product of the greatest living director and "Infernal Affairs" is an above-average Michael Mann wannabe at best. Scorsese took an interesting premise and executed it in a much better way.

Chinese audiences are bound to get sick of seeing cheap Hollywood knockoffs so when somebody comes close to a Hollywood-level production they get all the breaks in the world. I'm sure its very exciting to see a local production on that scale when thats what you're used to but its not terribly exciting for an American. Then there's the pretentious "if it's subtitled its better" mentality in English-speaking countries.

By removing much of the story's dramatic subtlety? By reducing the moral ambiguity of the two main protagonists to the psychological complexity of your average Spy-vs.-Spy comic?

Well, gimme clear-cut "GOOD GUYS AND BAD GUYS" any day over complex and far more interesting moral "gray areas". At least you didn't resort to using the word "pretent--
