I agree. I didn't think there was anything special about Infernal Affairs.

Re: The Departed Infernal Affairs Poll
I give the edge to IA, the villain in it is creepier, and overall it is more fresh, philosophical, subtle.
TD is more character driven and has the scorsese style going... but overall relies on too many cuss words and posing. we are supposed to think mark wahlberg's character is a cool badass? He should have been fired the first day.
Then there is that really stupid hollywood love triangle that the studios make all Leo movies have. They have sex to Comfortably Numb... wtf?
speaking of Leo, he is also really whiny the whole time. I didn't buy that gangsters would take him in.. in real life they would have shot him.
no way, it is more apples and oranges, scorsese made something "hyper masculine" and toug... for a movie by the best living director and editor, with 5 international stars and the hottest script in town, I still prefer IA..which is more poetic / subtle like I said.
for a crime drama with double moles, Marty took the easy way out and popped it out effortlessly, but took all the soul out of it. still, it won the oscar. that's what it finally took. "my first movie with a plot" he said.

Re: The Departed Infernal Affairs Poll
It's a close call, but I like IA a bit more than the Departed. I wasn't a big fan of Jack's scenery chewing, but that's just me. I also preferred IA's bleaker ending.
Anyway, I have always had this question after watching IA3 and maybe someone can answer it for me:

He was a convicted felon who served time. Of his apparently numerous court cases one was on a murder rap, and he was a violent thug, thief, and drug dealer/abuser IRL before his career.
I guess people just think 'Marky Mark' about him I guess...

He gouged the eye out of some poor Vietnamese immigrant during his sociopathic youth. Wonder if he's righted that particular wrong over the course of his wildly successful career...

Actually he attacked a couple of immigrants with a club shouting racial epithets while beating them, and bashed one guy's head in so bad it blinded him.
I saw him discuss it in an interview, that he had wondered if he could track the guy down and share his wealth a little. He had not done so as of that point but was 'looking in to it'. I wonder if he tried to do so at all.

Overall, I think IA was better, but The Departed was a lot of fun, too.
I didn't like IA2 or IA3 so much, though.
