1st version is to appeal to the lower class.
2nd version is the correct one.

dtcarson, you're right, we have been through this before, so get out of sanctimonious teacher mode and either vote for BAY-buhl, BAB-uhl or shut the hell up. You're welcome to lecture me seven ways 'til Sunday as to which pronunciation is right and which is wrong but one thing I don't need to be lectured on is the I'm-OK-You're-OK style of debate.

Can I lecture you on reading the whole thread?
Page One, post 5.
I wasn't lecturing you on the 'you're ok, I'm ok' style of debate. I was "lecturing" you on having your eyes/ears open to the points you disagree with, rather than just blindly naysaying them.
I'm not going to "lecture you" one way nor seven ways to Sunday, you're not worth my time. You've decided you're right, and everyone else is wrong. But one more: how do you pronounce this? Fuck off.
Oh, and not to be too buried in semantics [which this whole thread is, but I digress]: I believe it should be "my friend and I", not "me and my friend" in the original post.

Hmm i'm not an etymologist in any way but I don't think comparison to other words necessarily proves anything unless they're from the same language.
From wikipedia:
"In Gen. 11:9, the name of Babel is etymologized by association with the Hebrew verb balal, "to confuse or confound": Balal is regarded as a contraction of earlier *balbal. The actual meaning of the name bab-ilu in Akkadian is "gate of the god"."
To me all those babs and bals seem like they'd be pronounced "baaa," as in bad. I think maybe "Bay-bul" is kind of the anglicized pronounciation, like people say "eye-raq" and a thousand other country names and foreign words differently than they are said in their native land. I think a hebrew would have said "baa-bul," and whatever's right and wrong depends more on whether you like saying words how they are said in their homeland, or whether you say them in the anglicized way.

The director himself says Bah Bel. He's obviously NOT lower class.

Okay, let's get down to brass tacks here, Peep and Arpeggi--I am not the only one in this thread arguing that it should be pronounced BAY-buhl, so why the fuck are you guys so hellbent on making me the sole poster child of that side of the debate??? I'll follow Peep's lead; I'm done with this retarded-from-the-outset debate until you guys mature enough to broaden your complaints to include the other posters who aren't backing down from the BAY-buhl position. Only then will this debate return to being about the issue, rather than the person posting. I'll leave with this thought, though: the thread is entitled "How do YOU pronounce Babel?"; I'm not on a holy crusade to prove BAB-uhlites they're wrong, I'm just answering the goddamn question. Pronounce it "DOO-kee" for all I care; I pronounce it BAY-buhl. If that's means I've lost my place on your Christmas gift list, then I guess I'll just have to make do.

You're the only one who refuses to listen to other people's arguments (and using Gable to compare with Babel is totally wrong. Gable comes from the common word gable and is different from a proper name like Babel). And please let's not start with the "how do YOU pronounce it" crap, OP obviously asked for the correct pronounciation, not how each and every one member of DVDtalk pronounces it.
It is BAH-BEL if you know the origins of the word and if you believe the filmmaker knows how pronounce his own movie correctly.
It is Bay Bel if you follow some incorrect "logic" with words that have nothing to do with each other.
