The Departed - review thread

Re: The Departed - review thread
I haven't seen THE DEPARTED since its theatrical release. I didn't like it, but I don't remember why. Maybe just my antipathy towards DiCaprio, whom I've hated in every Scorsese movie. (But I thought he was great in DJANGO UNCHAINED.) In any event, I've been meaning to watch it again (I have it on disc as part of a Warner Bros. Best Picture Oscar collection), but I first want to re-watch the Hong Kong original, INFERNAL AFFAIRS and then watch its two sequels for the first time and then THE DEPARTED.

Anyone watch this lately? People write it off as being forgettable and bland Scorsese. I think it’s as good as the cop genre gets.
Like Scorsese’s other fast paced movies, it throws information at you non stop and there is never a dull moment. All the actors are on top of their game. And that fast paced Scorsese style is like putting on a good album.

^ I think it's with The Departed winning all of those Oscars. I remember folks at that time felt that The Departed was not necessarily top-tier Scorsese and that he should have already won many times over. That it was more of, well, let's give Marty his Oscar then.

We watched The Departed for the first time a couple of years ago. It didn't hold my interest like the best Scorsese movies do. I think that part of the reason the movie didn't work for me is that the heavy-handed parallelism that works well in genre movies from Hong Kong feels contrived when the director shifts the movie to a more realistic tone.
ETA: I looked it up on IMDB. It's Scorsese's second highest rated movie, between Goodfellas and Taxi Driver.

This movie is not as good as the Chinese original, which is disappointing considering the talent involved. A bad script with Marty phoning it in and a lot of overacting.

One thing that makes The Departed different than many Scorsese movies is that it has a lot of plot. Typically his films are more character pieces where we watch his characters go through circumstances. This film is heavily plotted.

It's the Marky Mark effect.

I really liked Infernal Affairs, but i HATED the Departed. Just everything about it felt wrong. Nicholson should have been exceptional, but he just didnt work. Ray Winstone as the tough guy makes me laugh as he is just a fat guy these days, and he looked really rough here. Di Caprio and Damon were nothing memorable, and the Boston accent in the movie grew more and more annoying by the second. It just felt like an exercise in futility and did nothing to improve upon the original, and from Scorsese thats not good. It didnt feel like one of his films at all.

I saw The Departed first and thought it was great. I was never a fan of DiCaprio until this movie. It's probably one of my favorite Scorsese films. Jack Nicholson had a Boston accent for like 5 minutes and then lost it. The only thing I hated was the shot with the rat.
I liked Infernal Affairs but I was comparing to The Departed the whole time. The American remake felt more tense. But yeah, the original was very good.
