Yeah, I got that impression too - but really deep in the closet, as in even lying to himself.
The way he kept calling the firemen "faggots", or how he couldn't "perform" in bed (which, by the by, is one way of saying the baby the psychiatrist is pregnant with is Leo's), or his nervous comment to Baldwin how his dick works "overtime", etc.

A quick question:
Early in the film, Damon is out on the beat with his partner, interviewing an older woman about her son. Then, Costello's car drives by and he says, "Wave hi to your mother!" and someone who looks like Leo waves. She then sees the car and stops talking to Damon.
Who was in the car? Was it her son? I thought her son had been killed after he robbed the microprocessors. This never made much sense to me.

Anyway no big deal. Didn't ruin the movie or anything. Just wanted to get some other thoughts on this.

Well, remember the last time he met with Dignam they were about to fist fight. Costigan (DiCaprio) later met Captain Queenan and sort of patched things up but he never really talked with Dignam again and he made it clear that the psychiatrist was the only person he really trusted.

Alright, first - I loved it (seen it a while ago just never bothered to post) but this film does not hold up well to multiple viewings.
It's pretty one dimensional charcter and story wise and while that's prob the point, I just have a hard time watching this film multiple times.
Some of the acting is pretty laugable at times and too over the top (Baldwin's first speech in the room while showing the pictures - one too many jokes when each picture popped up....overkill).
But it hasn't swayed me from my initial reaction upon seeing it - definitely a great film and the best of 2006.

It gets better on repeat viewings. I agree with RichC2, you pick up the subtleties in the performances, the dialogue, the narrative, and things you thought were stupid the first time seem to work better.

I'll give it yet another try soon. Myabe I'm being too damn picky I don't know. Something just bothers me about it when I keep trying to play it through and through. I did pick up on a lot of things I didn't catch the first time through as well.
One thing I do love though is how isolated Decap's character feels - you really feel it and that's some damn good acting.

Anyone watch this lately? People write it off as being forgettable and bland Scorsese. I think it’s as good as the cop genre gets.
Like Scorsese’s other fast paced movies, it throws information at you non stop and there is never a dull moment. All the actors are on top of their game. And that fast paced Scorsese style is like putting on a good album.

I loved it the first time I saw it but it doesn’t hold up quite as well on repeat viewings. It’s still a very good movie and one of my favorites from Scorsese.

I watched it again a few years ago. Only weak link sadly is Nicholson. He’s not right for the part and he overacts. Scorsese’s best gangster bad guys are scary and funny. Nicholson isn’t funny. And he’s only slightly scary.

I hate that this movie is now attached to the likes of Boondock Saints fans.

Has anyone ever connected Scorsese’s fast cutting to push more information at you fast ... and modern YouTube style editing? Scorsese can push an eventful scene into a few seconds.
Is is there an origin to that style? Some of you guys are far more versed in film than me.

I’ve been thinking about this yesterday and today.
Firstly, knowing Scorsese he’d credit Powel and Pressburger. Having the camera’s position and movement be dictated by the emotion rather than the action. He’d done that in his early work: Who’s That Knocking, Mean Streets, and Taxi Driver.
Then you have MTV. The music video style, where the music dictates the editing and length of scenes. Scorsese has made music videos. At that time in history, many people immediately became critical of the fast cutting of music videos. But Scorsese embraced it. Keeping it short, he also correctly predicted that audiences were perceptive enough to receive images fast and make sense of them because it worked for music videos.
This is from wikipedia:
The director wanted to take the gangster film and deal with it episode by episode, but start in the middle and move backwards and forwards. Scorsese would compact scenes and realized that if they were kept short, "the impact after about an hour and a half would be terrific".
"To begin Goodfellas like a gunshot and have it get faster from there, almost like a two-and-a-half-hour trailer. I think it's the only way you can really sense the exhilaration of the lifestyle, and to get a sense of why a lot of people are attracted to it."
