Superman Returns for me. They are both good movies with 1 miscast female role (Holmes/Bosworth), but only one has Superman so... it wins. I saw Batman Returns once, liked it, and moved on. Superman Returns has me planning repeat trips all weekend because I enjoyed it to the point of giddy. Apparently, it just made me care more.

Batman Begins because Batman is my favorite comic book character of all time. And Begins is just about the way I would have made a Batman movie. It easily transcended the superhero genre. I took my parents to see it and when my mother liked it, I knew it was something that wasn't just for comic book fans. The methodology of the film makes you accept Batman beyond a typical suspension of disbelief. Christian Bale's performance sucks you in and the world is so well drawn.
Superman Returns was really, really good but never rose above comic book movie. Routh, while a good actor, didn't carry the film in the same way that Christian Bale carried Batman. I admire what Superman did, but I am utterly amazed at what Batman did. |
While I loved Superman Returns and hope there is a sequel, I have to go with Batman Begins, by a substantial margin. It just engaged me more than Superman. But hey, Batman is a lot more interesting than Superman, so it makes sense.
Now, if we get a Batman and Superman movie together, we might have our definitive superhero movie! |
Heck, I still think someone should make a Dark Knight Returns film. That would feature both of them, although I don't think Superman fans would be all that happy.
|
Batman Begins is a more cohesive film, though that's not saying much for either one. Batman Begins also has much better villains and a more motivated, interesting plot.
|
My vote is for Superman Returns, but my vote is biased since Superman is my favorite superhero.
|
This isn't the most complex review but these were my inital reactions to both films.
Batman Begins-"Wow" Superman Returns-"Meh" |

I haven't seen Superman Returns yet, but I'm going to very soon. I have a feeling it's going to be a little disappointing. |

Batman Begins

I thoroughly enjoyed Batman Begins and thought they hit every not perfectly except for a small misfire with Katie Holmes. Christian Bale belonged in that bat suit, perfect casting choice.
Superman Returns? Meh, I was utterly dissapointed. The plot was weak, the climax was anything but, and way too much Lois / Relationship stuff. I left the movie theater P/Oed. |
Voted for Batman Begins. I thought it was a masterpiece compared to the other comic movies. Although I agree Spider-Man 2 and X2 were good. Haven't seen Superman Returns yet but will do tomorrow but I know it's not going to beat Batman Begins.

There are way too many Superman threads... Where are the mods?

I liked Superman Returns, but overall it was a very underwhelming movie. Entertaining but nothing special. Plus the Lex Luthor plot was extremely absurd (can you even build or grow anything on Krypton crystal-created land?). I'd rank it well behind Batman Begins, Spider-Man 2 and X2.

Why does everything have to be either or? Fuckin' polls...
I loved both movies. |

Did SR knock your socks off? |
I like them both, but I chose Superman Returns. The biggest issue I had with Batman Begins was Christian Bale playing the title character. His Batman was...I don't know....ugh.

Haven't seen Superman yet, but I would probably still vote for Batman Begins as it was the best of the franchise and I just like Batman better than Superman. :)

With hero bias..............Batman Begins
Without bias.................Batman Begins |
just came back from seeing Superman returns..... and
BATMAN BEGINS WINS EASY...... |
Batman is by far the more interesting character, and I really liked the way Batman Begins approached the backstory with realism (and Michael Caine is f'ing awesome as Alfred). However, I'll go against the grain and say that I enjoyed Superman Returns more. For all the things I like about Batman Begins, the background with the League of Shadows is poorly executed, and I found the pacing of the film to be off. Also, because it's played so seriously, when Batman does something a little too superhero-ish, it's jarring (his escape from Witch Mountain was especially silly). Superman Returns, however, is a silly film at its core, so it's easier to forgive those cheesy moments. I think in the end, though, it's easier to identify with the citizens of Metropolis and hope that Supe saves the day. With Gotham, no amount of speechifying from Katie Holmes made me particularly care about any of them.
They're both good films with very different approaches, and while I know Begins is technically the better film, I enjoyed Returns more. das |
