I don't know if you can tell by my moniker, but I will have to say the original "Dawn of the Dead".
It had all the elements of what makes horror movies so much fun. The social commentary about mindless consumerism alone should have garnered it an Oscar nod. But, I digress. It was so much fun and not too bad effects for a film that was made in 1978.

Dead Alive is my #1 favorite, can't get enough of that one
from there i would have to go to the romero collection, the order varies from one week to the next but most of the time Day of the Dead is at the top of those.

I have to say that after reading all the candidates for best zombie movie, there is no way I can just pick one and say it's my favorite. I have enjoyed so many of these flicks, that asking me to pick a favorite is like asking a parent to pick one of their offspring as their favorite (zombie) child.
I have seen literally dozens of zombie flicks, and I'm not sure that I have ever seen one that wasn't at least entertaining. Even the crappy early 1980's Italian Bruno Mattei/Umberto Lenzi atrocities are pretty darned good fun, if you're in the proper frame of mind.

The acting in the remake totally blows the original out the water...Tony Todd was great in the movie. I love how Savini made the girl start out scared then turn into zombie-asskicker. We have to give credit where it's due Tom really did a great job on the remake and many people prefer it over the original.

I agree that the acting was much better in the remake (I luv Tony Todd, but Duane Jones will always and forever be Ben to me) but the remake lacks the bleak paranoia of the original.
NOTLD '90 has much more of a partytime feel of DAWN '78, which isn't a bad thing. I just perfer my horror when it's horrorfying.

I'm probably the only person who can say I actually liked Nightmare City and Hell of the Living Dead, but the Original Dawn of the Dead is the best film ever.
