Newsarama hates it.

So that makes a total of 2 very negative reviews by my count.

Patman 06-19-06 03:55 PM

Well, that Newsarama "review" is written by someone who appears to be smitten with "Smallville", so take it with a grain of salt.

Kal-El 06-19-06 04:08 PM

94% at RT right now out of 18 reviews.

yeah and this line gets me

I could understand it when Richard Donner screwed up, he's not a comic guy. BUT SINGER IS A COMIC GUY! He knows better. We've all seen X-Men, where is the guy who understood the comics and presented the characters in a powerful, albeit altered, story?
Singer never read comics and has called himself "not a comic book guy"

Anyone want to take bets on how long after it opens we'll have a thread entitled "DVDTalk Review of Superman Returns" in which we wonder why Brian Ornd...er...the reviewer hated the product? ;)

You also hear it in snippets during the movie.

I had goosebumps (and a big smile) during the opening credits.

GeorgeP 06-19-06 07:41 PM

Speaking of this, does anyone know yet whether the credits are patterned after those awesome 'swooping' effects from the 1978 original?

How do the credits look? Totally different style...or (please?) an homage? :)

As I mentioned, I got goosebumps because they are a definate homage. Of course, the planets and stars that you 'swoop' by are updated and more detailed.

They really start the movie off on the right foot.

There was a press screening in the theater I work in. I snuck in during my break and saw the opening credits...and let me just say that IT WAS FUCKING AWESOME!!!!!!!

Kal-El 06-21-06 01:34 AM

Damn lucky bastards. Oh well. Only a week left. To those on the West Coast, Brandon's on Letterman tonight.

Another question: do they just start right in with the march or do they do something similar to the original with the curtains and b/w prologue? The ST I "sampled" sounds like it just goes straight from the WB logo to the main theme.

Howard Stern saw it last night and he said it was everything he wanted in a Superman movie. Everything was top notch and the action was great.

he gave it 4 1/2 stars. the half because he is tired of lex luthor in the movies

I never got to hear Stern's actual review of the movie, only his backstory of what happened during it and how he missed out on enjoying the first half hour because he felt guilty over how he had treated one of his employees who had sat in his seat.

I have to agree with Stern about Luthor. While I am sure Spacey does a fine job, I would like to see someone other than Luthor be the main villain. They have such a great rogue's gallery to choose from: Metallo, Gorilla Grod (I think he's Green Lantern though), Brainiac, I would even be game for a return of General Zod if he were played by the right actor (Ralph Finnes would kick ass).

raven56706 06-21-06 09:50 AM

Finnes as Zod

raven56706 06-21-06 09:50 AM

how about the guy or beast that killed superman

Ah.. Doomsday. Interesting to see how'd they pull that one off.

Mr. Cinema 06-21-06 10:21 AM

Wow, Fiennes would be freaking awesome as Zod. Good call. I wouldn't mind seeing Braniac either. Bizarro will likely show up in sequel 3 or 4. :)

raven56706 06-21-06 10:28 AM

yeah doomsday... have him kill superman in the end and leave it for a to be continued ending

Damed 06-21-06 10:29 AM

I would LOVE a Bizarro Movie!

While I find him amusing, most moviegoers would liken him to Jar Jar Binks and he would be hated immensely, or so I believe.

Damed 06-21-06 10:44 AM

I must be in the minority then. I always got a kick out of Bizarro.

Deftones 06-21-06 11:15 AM

Brainiac would be easy to do. But, that might now work since Supes never really defeated him alone, IIRC. ;)

God, I know. He's all over the place these days. In Star Wars, in Lord of the Rings, I think I even heard he was in Pirates of the Caribbean 2!

...Oh wait, NO HE WASN'T. What the hell is Stern talking about? Lex Luthor hasn't been in a live action Superman film in decades.

GuessWho 06-21-06 02:38 PM

Didn't you feel bad for Vince Vaughn when Jennifer Aniston started dating Lex Luthor in The Break-up?
