Just got back from watching it and I thought it was pretty good.

Spoiler:
I didn't know what to make of him having a son now. I don't remember him and lois ever getting that personal in the old movies? But I was find with that and have wanted to always see their relatioinship grow. But as usual it ends on a weird note. I find I have a son...I think I'll go fly off into the sunset now???????????????????????? Ok...and what about the fiance???Does he get the boot now? Too many question left unaswered.

Wonder if we'll see a sequel? Has anyone hard anything?

dadaluholla 07-02-06 06:24 PM

There were maybe 2 or 3 people clapping as I was rushing out of the theater. I don't know if that was because they really enjoyed the film, or they were just glad it was over and they could finally leave.

I just have questions about the boy being Supes' son. I'm guessing he is from Superman 2 when Lois and Clark slept together. Unless the astronomers discovered Krypton & Clark had a ship ready, how would he not find out Lois was pregnat? Did the memory loss kiss happen and does Lois think the kid is from someone else? Also I wonder if she knows full well that the kid is Superman's and she is having the kid act sick to hide the fact? Other than those, I think this is the best Superman movie ever. While 1 & 2 were good, they haven't aged that well and this new one bests them both.

Just got back from seeing the film and this was something that I couldn't
figure out. How does Lois know that the kid is Superman's, but not know
Superman is Clark? It'd have to be both or none wouldn't it? She whispers
that the kid is his when he's in the hospital bed (though you don't hear
her actual words, she looks towards the kid before leaning in close to
whisper in his ear, then the 1st place he goes afterwards is to the kid's
bedside and mentions father/son comments to him while he's sleeping,
ie; he's being a proud father), so she knows it's his. The only explanation
would be that she did the deed with him as Superman and I don't really
think that's how that would have played out. ...Maybe a few years into
the marriage... "Honey, how's about you put on your suit tonite for me" ;)

And maybe it's just me, but I had a hard time believing that kid was under 5
(Superman being away for only 5 years).

As someone else mentioned, I think they're going for a Kryptonite makes him stronger thing with the son. His asthma stopped when the Kryptonite was
put in from of him.

Saw it opening night, loved it. The jet scene is amazing.

I saw it twice and a lot of people clapped at the end both times. Clearly the crowds I was with enjoyed it.

There was shot of them in bed in Superman II. IIRC, she wrote the "I spent the night" article in Superman I but they didn't get "physically serious" until II.

Supermallet 07-02-06 09:41 PM

This movie has been on my mind since I saw it Tuesday night. I downloaded the trailers available on the Xbox 360 and have been rewatching I and II endlessly. I cannot wait to see this again.

No kidding. I went with a friend today for the 2nd time and I swear it was even better. This time around I got to see all the "inside stuff" and Homages I missed the 1st time. I didn't think she would like it but she applauded at the end and talked about how much she liked it in the car.

Rival11 07-02-06 10:14 PM

I haven't been to the theater in years and it took Supes to get me off my ass and go.

I couldn't have been happier......how about them opening credits? Brought a tear to my eye :)

I thought the pace of the flick was perfect and I'm glad it wasn't too heavy on the action (although there is a lot).

I can't figure out for the life of me why everyone hates Bosworth and Spacey so much (well, Spacey not so much but people aren't pleased). OK, true I like Margo's performance a lot better but Bosworth wasn't horrendous at all and definitely NOT a miscast. Spacey was excellent, I for one acutally saw a lot of "Hackman" in him and he owned the role.

One thing I will agree on, while I think Routh is a great Superman, he IS Clark Kent.

I also personally love the
Spoiler:
reveal that the kid is Supes son, they can go in so many directions with it

Oh and the plane scene was unreal, I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

So all in all, I'm very happy I finally went back to the theater and spent about $10.00 for the movie and $7.50 on a medium drink and a box of candy.

Supermallet 07-02-06 10:19 PM

I thought Routh's Clark Kent was woefully deficient. Then again, it could have been the script, because they gave Clark nothiing to do.

I also don't understand why Kate Bosworth is not getting enough credit for her performance. Lois Lane has never really been the best defined character either in comics nor in the movies, but I thought Kate created her own version of it well. She was neither overly brash like Margot Kidder, nor so undefined as played by Teri Hatcher. It's a subtle performance, and I believed in it.

LivingINClip 07-02-06 10:32 PM

I think it's a case of people projecting their thoughts on the movie to the audience they saw it with. Anywhoo, just saw it again today and I'm still luvin' it
Give me a break. To say I am "projecting" my thoughts is absurd. I was there opening night and I know what I heard and saw. For the most part, the opening night crowd was not excited. Maybe you could contribute that to the fact that most of those people was obviously diehard comic fans (see, all of them had some kind of Superman clothes on). But there was still a backlash. Not to mention, look on the internet and most people are still pissed off about the kid.

If anything, I would say that you are biased towards the film and have been since the get-go. There is nothing wrong with that, but your username gives away your diehard love for the character and may blind you to the fact that movie has some big issues.

With all that said, I enjoyed it for what it was, a remake of the Donner film. It's still miles ahead of ANYTHING Marvel has offered us, but not near as good as Batman Begins.

vegasbaby 07-02-06 11:20 PM

I was so looking forward to this movie, and I cant believe I'm going to say this, but, in my 1 word review, I say ...

BORING!

Can't anyone make a good movie anymore?

I had no problem with Routh (I actually think he's going to be a great Superman, eventually). Bosworth and Spacey were fine. They werent the issue either.

I just think the movie was incredibly slowly paced ...

I also thought the scene leading up to and including the 'hospital' (wont give away specifics) were almost laughable.

Supe 1 & 2 were MUCH more entertaining!

Supermallet 07-03-06 01:03 AM

I just got the soundtrack, and I definitely prefer Ottman's orchestration of the Superman theme over Williams'. It's got more punch.

Lucky you. I've been to most of the retailers around here and nobody seems to have it out yet for some reason.

To expound more on my 2nd viewing, I was aware that my initial elation may have been just the hype but nope. Everything I liked about it on Tuesday night still held true. Even liked the Bosworth performance even more. And as for being "blind" because of my love for the character, I don't really care even if it were true. I like what I like and nothing anybody says is going to change that.

Seeing it on IMAX 3D probably on Tuesday.

Supermallet 07-03-06 01:38 AM

Amazon has the soundtrack for $13.99. If you buy "Look, Up In The Sky!" with it on DVD, you get free shipping.

Dash 07-03-06 01:57 AM

I saw the movie and Liked it quite alot more than I thought I would. Though thats because I was going into the movie with prettly low expectations. I have never really been a huge superman fan. The fact that he is pretty much invincible kinda makes him too perfect for me. From what I can gather Kryptonite is involved in most plots which seems repetitive. (correct me if im wrong). Like I said, I was never a huge fan, but for me the movie was qutie entertaining. I would have liked to see a little more character development and some more Clark Kent so ill give the movie a B/B+. Saying all this, I will probably get the dvd and will look foward to the next installment.

ravan 07-03-06 03:36 AM

Loved it!

Heads up - Look, up in the sky is showing on A&E 7/4 and on history channel on 7/8 I think.. Tivo all set here..

Spoiler:
In Superman II Lois and Clark/Superman slept together. In the Lester cut, it's after he gave up his powers (but still possessed Kryptonian DNA) but in the Donner cut it happened before. I'm not sure which version Singer has in mind when he references that event, but either one works I guess.

Superman left Earth on the remote chance that he'd find a connection to his origins, his Kryptonian heritage, a place where he belonged. He found nothing there but blasted rock. The irony is that he had what he was looking for back on Earth, he just didn't know it. He knows Jason is his son. Jason continues the line of Jor-El. Superman knows he is the man he is because of his Earthly upbringing, so he chose to let Jason be raised by Lois and Richard. But Superman will be watching and he'll be there if Jason ever needs answers to questions Lois and Richard can't provide.

Superman thought he was alone in the universe, but now there is someone like him, someone he can relate to and teach and care for. Superman thought Krypton and all its heritage would die with him, but now he know it'll live on in Jason. Superman now has a legacy. And he's going to do his best to make sure he doesn't jeopardize it by alienating Jason from Earthly society. It'll be hard for Superman and it'll be hard for Jason. Superman is essentially a god among mortals, but he wasn't raised as such, which is why he's now a champion of the people. He genuinely cares for people. He sees the good in the world even when others can't. He wants Jason to learn to appreciate the finer things in life before acknowledging his true heritage. Superman wants what every father wants: his son to grow up just like him.

Richard is very much in the picture still. Lois did not break up with him. She cares for Superman, but she can't ever be with him. He belongs to the world. Richard is there for Lois and her son. But Superman will always be there when he's needed.

Well said. I didn't care about the "Lois Lane" character or Bosworth when I heard about the casting. Like I said, I'm more of a Lana fan even in terms of the comic and Cartoon Series. But I'll tell ya, flat ass Kate has grown on me big time.

I was never a huge Kidder fan either.

I saw this over the weekend and liked it quite a bit overall, though I'm not sure how much replay value it would have. That said, I had a huge problem with the 'twist'. I've only read the last 4 pages of the thread so forgive me if it was mentioned earlier than that, but...

Spoiler:
The movie makes a huge point of how devastated Lois was when Superman left and indicates it took her a whole lot of time and effort to get over him. So how in the holy hell does she get pregnant by Superman and then sleep with Richard soon enough after that for him to think he's the father of the kid? For Richard to believe that, they must've slept together within a month of her getting pregnant. It just seemed ridiculously contrived to have everyone think he was the father.

Granted...this is a stretch but...
Spoiler:
I don't think we have to believe that just because Richard calls him "son" he believes him to be his Biological son. Many men hook up with Single moms and hit it off with their kids. I don't think it's ever said that Richard is his bio father. Also, based on Lois' reaction to the kid's sudden abilities I would guess that Lois honestly didn't know it was Kal's kid. But then again over the weekend I spoke with a guy who believes Lois was giving the kid Kryptonite laced Asthma medication to suppress his powers to hide his heritage so anything is possible.

I guess that could be the case, but at a minimum...
Spoiler:
I wouldn't expect her to be going out and sleeping around for at least a couple months after Supes had left. So she either had to realize it was his kid or, if she didn't remember having sex with him, think she'd somehow pulled off an intercourseless conception. I didn't mind them throwing a kid in the mix on principle, but I really felt like they botched the execution. Oh yeah, and the Kryptonite-laced asthma medication theory is priceless. :D
