According to some people here, it won't be huge on Tuesday because it's missing the words "American Way."

Come on, people, to get offended over this is about as absurd as those two black women who got mad at the airline stewardess for singing "eenie meeny miney moe" with different lyrics. It is a complete and utter non-issue.

By the way, I can't believe no one has mentioned how hilarious it was when
Spoiler:
Lois discovered Lex aboard his boat with the toothbrush stuck in his mouth. Utterly hilarious.

Dr. DVD 06-30-06 07:56 PM

It might pop a decent number Monday night, as a lot of businesses will be closed Tuesday.

I saw an interesting piece on CNN this morning where they talked about the success of a movie all being about timing. I agree with this in a major way, and while it is good summer fare, I think that it might have fared better had it been released at Christmas like the 1978 original. Just my .02 though.

Supermallet 06-30-06 11:31 PM

It doesn't have the same cheery tone as the original did. I don't think it would have done as well at Christmas. IMO, of course.

I think they took political correctness WAY too far by omitting "the American way", although Superman is technically an alien, thus he shouldn't be relegated to saving just the U.S.

Hmm..maybe in the next one, instead of using rocks and water to threaten Metropolis, Luthor should swipe Superman's green card and threaten to have him deported!

Supermallet 07-01-06 12:08 AM

You're making a mountain out of a molehill. This is so utterly meaningless. Is there nothing more important going on that you have to latch on to this? It's two words and the way they said it, the line runs better, because it's not a word for word recitation of his mantra.

Of all things to be offended over, this really shouldn't be one of them.

I agree.

While I did notice the omission in the movie it didn't bother me one bit. I didn't pay $10 to hear one line of dialouge no matter how classic it was/is.

...I'm seeing it again Sunday(7/2) :D

I agree with this. The line absolutely SOUNDS better the way it is in the movie. I think if Perry White had said it differently, it would have had a different meaning, here it's just part of his "Superman to do list" of article ideas. I'm stunned that it would bother people so much.

Your response shows that it isn't "utterly meaningless."

My wife and I both rolled our eyes at it. It's not that I take offense to the script necessarily, but considering the Hollywood hatred of America, it's annoying. Left or Right, an intellectually honest viewer will realize they (whoever the they was) wanted to avoid the patriotic fanfare.

Huh? Alls I said was that it was silly for being omitted. The purist in me would have like to have heard it intact, but I don't mind either way. Probably sell more tickets that way, lol.

It never bothered me until that interview with the writers explaining why they omitted it. When I first heard Perry saying "all that stuff" in the trailer, I thought they were just poking fun at the line, kinda like the "it's a bird, it's a plane, no it's.....you wanted to see me" scene.

Now that I know it's due to political correctness and appeasing America-haters overseas, it's no longer funny to me. It's borderline offensive.

phraseturner 07-01-06 11:20 AM

Considering the production and marketing costs of this film, it will only be able to turn a profit if it does very well overseas. Domestic box office alone will not be nearly enough. So, annoying as few progressive non-American movie-goers as possible makes good business sense, if Warner's wants them to buy tickets...

stingermck 07-01-06 11:40 AM

The boards at Box Office Mojo are showing only $16 Mil for Friday, $48 mil so far. Devil wears Prada was right behind it on Friday, just under $10 mil.

Shame, I really liked the movie. Now no matter what it will be considered a flop without some record breaking weekend, and if POTC opens big next week.

I enjoyed the movie, but I'm old enough to have grown up with the original films.

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but can Smallville be to blame? You have to assume that for some, (possibly younger fans) the show is their Superman. And to have a sequel to such an old movie, and not the current incarnation, may have alienated some fans?

Terrell 07-01-06 01:00 PM

I don't think Smallville is the cause. The fact is Superman has never been a huge phenomenon at the box office, including the first one. Very good, but nothing that would make you go wow. Why I'll never know. The character is as popular as any superhero, and the most well-known along with Spider-Man and Batman. So who can explain it. Maybe Superman is the least interesting character because he basically has no flaws and is practically invulnerable. It's hard to make an audience relate to a character like that.

It's a bottom line business decision. If the film were percieved to have elements of Rah Rah Americanism in it, it would hurt BO outside of this country. sad but true. Its a shame the rest of the world can't love us as much as some of us love ourselves, but that's the way it breaks.

But then none of this should bother you if your a capatilist- after all a buck's a buck.

Terrell 07-01-06 01:09 PM

It's a lame decision. That line wasn't going to have a meaningful impact on this film's box office. People that wanted to see the film worldwide wouldn't let one line stop them. If American hatred were that prevalent, nobody overseas would even bother to see an American made film, nor would any American products and restauraunts do any business. That's a copout. This is an American film about an iconic American character. The line should have stayed. It's a classic line of dialogue for this character.

No, my response shows people are being idiots in making a big deal about this, and I'm trying to stop the lunacy. :p

I did not leave the theater thinking "That film just didn't have enough America."

I happened to catch a minute of Fox news last night. They had some fat country singer on, wearing camo and a Jesus hat. He was talking about how patriotism in this country is being torn apart by liberals and the Supreme Court and the interviewer was basically sucking this guy's cock, asking why so many country music stars are so patriotic and all this other bullshit. If that's patriotism in this day and age, then I am GLAD that Superman left out that line.

Mr. Cinema 07-01-06 01:30 PM

Uh, the guy's suit is made up of mostly Red and Blue. What more do you people want? :)

dpz301 07-01-06 01:32 PM

not here to argue about the red, white and blue, but i saw Superman today and it was great. loved it from start to end. can't wait for the dvd!!

But dude, that's modern(post '40's and '50's) Hollywood. It's typical AND it really is a non-issue.

Good points. I also think it has to do with Superman being well, Superman. He's not the normal powerless human that Batman is. I think it's generally easier to identify with Batman than it is with Superman.

What dpz301 said. I loved the movie, and plan on seeing it again asap. Welcome back to the big screen Superman.

Gizmo 07-01-06 06:27 PM

I don't want to read though the thread (Avoiding spoiler), but the girlfriend wants to know if they played the trailer for Eragon?

Mr. Cinema 07-01-06 06:36 PM

My theater didn't. They showed Spidey 3, My Super Ex-Girlfriend, Lady in the Water, and an animated movie that looks just like Antz, except it has a kid who's been shrunk down to their size. No idea what that one is.

MBoyd 07-01-06 09:18 PM

Yeah whats up with the ANTZ rip off. I guess Dreamworks licensed the design? Or we'll hear about a lawsuit soon.

No Earagon trailer the 2x I watched it either.

I was 1.25 million off for Friday . . . I revise my estimates to around 20 million for Saturday. :)
