I've spent 5 years trying to get the IMDB to recommend 'Beautiful Girls' to fans of 'Nobodys Fool' and vice versa, without success. I write to them every year and they ignore me each time. It's very discouraging.

Both movies are remarkable, and under appreciated so I still keep trying to get them a little recognition for some reason... A forum thread on the NF board titles 'Are there any similar movies?' mentions BG many times.

Some abbreviations become de facto acronyms because they have become words in themselves (like "DVD"), but I don't think IMDB has reached that level.

From Dictionary.com:

ac·ro·nym ( P ) Pronunciation Key (kr-nm)
n.
A word formed from the initial letters of a name, such as WAC for Women's Army Corps, or by combining initial letters or parts of a series of words, such as radar for radio detecting and ranging.

Technically, it doesn't have to form a real word. See the first example in the definition. Back to english class for you!

Hmm....'word' to me implies 'pronounceable' like WAC or RADAR or SCUBA. "laser" wasn't a word until the acronym was created.
I would consider DVD and IMDB and PDQ and things like that abbreviations; you're abbreviating the long-form of the term, and you're spelling out the abbreviation, not 'saying' it like a word. Like BBQ for 'barbeque', that's an abbreviation, not an acronym. Those things aren't "words" they're "collections of letters said separately".
If it were IMDaBa, that could be an acronym, and somewhat fun to say.

Then again, based on this definition "A sound or a combination of sounds, or its representation in writing or printing, that symbolizes and communicates a meaning and may consist of a single morpheme or of a combination of morphemes", "DVD" and "IMDB" would be a word, as far as I can tell, and thus could be acronyms based on that definition. At least, if a letter can be a 'morpheme'.

I figured some people might take the initiative to look it up, but I guess not:

in·i·tial·ism
n.

An abbreviation consisting of the first letter or letters of words in a phrase (for example, IRS for Internal Revenue Service), syllables or components of a word (TNT for trinitrotoluene), or a combination of words and syllables (ESP for extrasensory perception) and pronounced by spelling out the letters one by one rather than as a solid word.

tonyc3742 05-26-06 11:06 AM

There you go! It's an initialism.
I didn't look it up, because I don't recall ever having heard that word before.

I don't believe in isms.

GuessWho 05-26-06 02:50 PM

oops! i meant....

-Ism's in my opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an -ism, he should believe in himself. I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in The Beatles, I just believe in me." Good point there. After all, he was the walrus. I could be the walrus and I'd still have to bum rides off of people.

tonyc3742 05-26-06 03:02 PM

Some people believe in astrology
Others believe in human technology
Some people believe in all those -ologies
But I believe in swordfish

Where did I say it had to form a real (as in English) word? It just has to make a word that is pronounced rather than the initialism.

Oh, this thread is real - just like global warming and bird flu.

But nobody has clarified this:

Does the Internet Movie Data Base just cover movies, or are films and motion pictures also included?

The OP has become my new favorite member. You have got to go back and read some of his other trollish posts. They are hilarious.

Here's a classic in a DDD sale thread on 6 pages of movies that are on sale:

"Could someone post a list of the movies that are on sale? I'm at work and don't have time to browse through all the pages."

Or in a WWE dvd sale thread, he asks if the other members realize that wrestling is fake. God, I find it annoying and yet, funny in a "sling blade kind of way".

I have an 8 yo who is the same way. He sees something on TV for the first time and it's as if it never existed until he just saw it. Just like my 8 yo, you have to be firm with them about doing things on their own or you'll be waiting on them hand and foot. So for you moms and dads out there, think of our new member as 8 and how to handle his comments and requests will all make sense.

Ron
