Taxi Driver is overrated

I watched this for the second time ever the other day, hoping I would catch whatever i missed the first time. Sorry, but I just don't get the massive praise this film gets. The acting and directing are great no doubt, but when the movie is over I just felt indifferent to the whole thing. People say this is Scorsese's best film, but I stick with my choice of Goodfellas and Casino.

Well its also not my personal favourite from De Niro/Scorsese....but i do see why it a classic. Well written story by Schrader, great music by Bernard Herman, good character acting by Keitel and Foster, superb improvisation from De Niro, one of the best cameos ever in a film by Scorsese himself, and overall a film that makes you feel like you are in the seedy side of the 70's. I can see why a lot of people won't appreciate the film because at times it can slow down, but overall i think it is a great film looking at the concepts of underage prostitution, political assassination and the difficulty that Vietnam vets had in re-entering a society that had abandoned them. I still think that Goodfellas and King of Comedy are the best things that this team has ever made though.

I think Scorsese's best film is Mean Streets, but I would still argue that you are wrong.

FWIW, I think GoodFellas is overrated.

Yeah I sat through Goodfellas wondering where all the hype came from. Then again, I don't like new wave mobsters anyway.

As for Taxi Driver, I think the movie rings clearer with anti-social types. It's really good tale of isolation and the mania that pursues it.

Love Taxi Driver and Goodfellas, but I think Raging Bull is the overrated one.

I don't care for it either. Saw it once, thought it was just mediocre and no desire to see it again.

I would say Taxi Driver is not only Scorsese's best film but De Niro's best performance as well. Raging Bull is another great film. Goodfellas and Casino are decent but I'd rate them as the worst De Niro/Scorsese pairings.

Is it really necessary to bump every Taxi Driver thread with the same response?

To me TAXI DRIVER is like othere 70's movies DIRTY HARRY, DEATH WISH, WALKING TALL and BILLY JACK in that the hero takes justice into his own hands. But I never see the other movies get the praise as TAXI DRIVER. And AFI had one of their TOP 100 or whatever they called it BEST MOVIE VILLIANS and Travis Bickle was on that list.
So I consider him a hero AFI considers him a villian.
And even though I like TAXI DRIVER the praise is way overreated.

Someone I used to know who is an "aspiring filmmaker" probably wouldn't like Taxi Driver either. He's more of a Taxi (Jimmy Fallon and Queen Latifah) fan, and I'm not joking.

And you know what, I didn't care for a great amount of films that aren't my taste. Do I make threads for each one? Nah. I just shrug it off as something that just wasn't for me and move on to the films I like.

I have no doubt that someone who is naming themself after an adam sandler film and has disliked any serious attempt at acting he has done to not care for taxi driver. It doesn't seem like your taste of film to begin with.

I personally think that the word "Overrated" is overrated and should not be used in cases like this.

The films message is made surprisngly clear and the story itself was amazing. Not to mention the way it was presented how all along he was just as dirty and scummy as the thing he hated.

I think the fact that Taxi Driver is praised as one of the top movies ever made gives a guy who doesn't like the film the right to make a thread like this. I love Taxi Driver, but I don't mind hearing (and want to hear) from people who don't. If for nothing else, to see why they don't like it. It's often more interesting than having a conversation with someone who shares my views and likes it.

Not to get off topic, but the way this guy feels about Taxi Driver is the way I feel about Batman Begins. It's a movie loved by most that I think is complete garbage. And I'm a mild fan of the Batman character, so it's not like I just don't like the subject matter. I've never made a thread about it though, yet.

Anyway, I like this thread.

Do you like this thread more than the other two threads about this very same subject matter in movie talk?

Yea there should obviously only be one thread, but I like the subject matter all the same.
