Times Square is a tourist theme park now, with flashy versions of chain stores, restaurants and multiplexes you can get in any mall in America now. I miss the days when I could (and did) see a Clint Eastwood quadruple feature (the Man with No Name trilogy, plus HANG 'EM HIGH) at a huge Broadway single screen theater, or a Bruce Lee double bill on 42nd Street. I have friends who work in Times Square and have to struggle through crowds of tourists just to get to and from their office, and they're practically begging for crime to come back.

I can understand that. I love films that show old gritty 42nd street NYC. I wish I could have seen what it was like in person. NYC had an identity back then, now as you said it's basically a giant tourist mall.

Like I said, I liked the movie, and I thought it was good. I just don't think it's a Top 100 movie.

Yeah, but that's just Times Square.

Not really. So many areas in Manhattan are overrun by tourists now. I remember when Soho was deserted at night. When clubs started opening there, you'd have to walk through long stretches of quiet, dark, dramatic streets to get to them. Now it's boutiques and restaurants and families with kids at all hours! I remember going to the movies in the Village often. All those theaters are closed now and replaced by tourist-friendly shops and restaurants. And, again, tourists crawling all over the place at all hours. OR fresh-faced young NYU students newly transplanted from all the places those tourists come from.

Top 10 all-time movie for me. Scorsese's masterpiece (one of many). It's cool if you don't like it but I'll pee in your Ovaltine when you're not looking.

God I miss those days.
A Sonny Chiba triple feature for a couple of bucks,
with audience participation (a la MST3K) and the scent of illegal substances in the air.

I agree. I've posted this before where I have bought and recorded TAXI DRIVER many times, but can't understand the big love for the movie.
Out of 4 stars I give it 3.
I would put this movie in the catorgy of THE WARRIORS, MAD MAX top 100 and not GONE WITH THE WIND, WIZARD OF OZ.

Dinkins???
I'm talking about the Lindsay & Koch years.
I prefer the "criminals" over the flip-flop wearing hipsters & tourists.
They gave New York character.

Look at this crap

I can make out Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda and promiscuous sex... my kind place!

Yeah. I grew up in the 80s, so to me, that was the epitome of things great in film: over the top action films, gritty sci-fi, and horror.

After watching some more films from the 70s now I see why that era is regarded so highly. So far Taxi Driver has just topped my list of favorite movies.
I also recently saw Cool Hand Luke. That was excellent as well.

Chinatown surprised me. I can't imagine a leading actor having a big piece of gauze over his face for the entire film. They really strived for realism back then.

Reading those reviews, it's sort of weird because it's like he doesn't seem to "get" either of those movies.

While I think The Usual Suspects is, for the most part, over-praised and doesn't have a lot of replay value, it's still an interesting movie that centers around an unreliable narrator.

Fixed your grammar and spelling.

And, no. I'd rather rent it or wait to catch it on IFC, in case I don't like it.

Umm...that photo's from around 1970, during the Lindsay administration.

THE LOSERS on the Lyric marquee and John Wayne in CHISUM further down (the Selwyn) are the giveaways.
