Without a doubt 1492: Conquest Of Paradise. People say it's Ridley Scott's worst directorial effort and film, French actor Gerard Depardieu was miscast as Christopher Columbus and his accent is laughable, the film itself suffers from historical inaccuracies many people have criticized the film for that, it's slow paced, Armand Assante who plays a part in the film should have played Christopher Columbus. The film was a box office flop, blah blah.

I could go on and on. Really, I can't think of any other film that has been this heavily scrutinized by people and critics, when as a matter of fact it's a very powerful and moving film, with gorgeous cinematography and one of the best scores ever in cinema by Vangelis.

There is lots of remarkable points to the film that people fail to see for some reason. Lots of scenes in the film are done to perfection and with the soundtrack it works like a poem with music.

What a shame lots more people failed to see this at the theater. This is one of those films that you have to see in the theater.

But the criticism this film draws is heavily unfair to the filmakers and the cast.

I agree. I walked out of the theatre going, WTF!? and I was given the DVD, went ahead and watched it again and then w/ commentary and saw a film I didnt before. It was more enjoyable the 2nd and 3rd time. I think I went in expecting something it wasnt so I was pissed off a it. I definitely enjoy it more now and yet people tell me Im nuts for having it.

INDEPENDENCE DAY.

LOVE this film. I've seen it literally hundreds of times, and I love it as much now, as I did when I first saw it on July 5, 1996.

The hate I have read about this film knows no end, but I love it too much to care.

'Cradle Will Rock', which I like a whole bunch even though I acknowledge it's a bit of a mess at times...

and 'The Terminal', which I really don't understand the hatred of.

I think a lot of Bill Murray movies are under-rated, The man who knew too little, Groundhog's Day, What about Bob? A lot of his movies I can watch time and time again. I know he has a large fan base as well, but I think there are a lot of people who don't understand the comedy out there.

1. It shows zero understanding of what New Yorkers are like. In this regard it is more laughable than loathsome. It's some weird fantasy of New York as some small town where everyone helps each other and loves each other. With this level of realism, it might as well be set on Mars in the future.

2. It is completely and utterly insulting and xenophobic in its portrayal of foreigners. We've moved on from the scary communist archetype of the Cold War to the noble buffoon archetype. What progress. No one, from any country, with enough resourcefulness to get on a plane and actually make it to another country, will not understand that if guys in uniforms pull you aside and sit you down in an airport, they are trying to convey something important to you, and you should either try to understand if you can or find some other way to communicate. The fact that he just keeps speaking in gibberish and thinks that they're giving him a pep talk is just ridiculous. The only assumption that makes this work is that people in other countries are unsophisticated idiots. Can you imagine an American movie showing an American acting that way in a foreign country?

3. The character's motivation makes no sense. Aww, those adorable, foreign simpletons and their irrepressible sentimentalism.

If the title of this thread was "Movies you hate, and everyone else hates too", then Manos would be a perfect example.

The sad thing is that I have actually seen this movie twice, The uncut non-MST3K version, and the shorter MST3K version. Thank god I was drinking heavily during both viewings.

I am a bit of a Bill Murray movie aficianado myself, but I wouldn't call Groudhog Day and What About Bob? movies that everyone else hates with him, no way. Those are huge Murray movies now. But definitly The Man Who Knew Too Little, a little under-rated Murray gem. What about Quick Change as well, there ya go.

Oh, heh, no worries. Friends or family always have been the most harshest/coldest critics you will ever come across.

I wouldn't put any of those in the "everybody else hates" category.

NIGHT OF THE ZOMBIES (aka HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD)

Most people can't get past to the similarities/rip-offs of DAWN OF THE DEAD. But IMO it is a fun film with plenty of genuine scares.

Popeye, starring Robin Williams. Maybe I only like it because I saw it in theaters as a kid, but I still think it is one of the few cartoon-based live-action movies that successfully makes you feel as though you are watching a cartoon come to life.

Me to, I bought the LE disc set of the film, I love the film, but I understand peoples beef with it, but all movies are guilty of sacrificing reality for storytelling.

I am also a big fan of The Terminal and bought the 3-disc set. I don't care if it isn't reality. I suppose you dislike Sci-Fi movies as well because that isn't 'reality' The events are BASED on a true story, but life can suck or be boring so they add fiction to make it fun.

Movies I liked that others seemed to hate:

Waterworld
Eyes Wide Shut
Punch-Drunk Love
Kicking and Screaming (the Noah Baumbach film, NOT the Will Ferrell one. I only say that because no one seems to have even heard of it and it's one of my favorite films of all time.)
