Literally just remembered that True Romance was what got me addicted to Tarantino. I was 13 getting a haircut and one of the guys there (he's NOT gay by the way 
) who had also told me to see The Lost Boys and Aliens and all sorts of rad movies told me I HAD to see this. Never saw any of his other stuff. So this was about 7 years ago, I rented it. Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction followed soon after, and I was officially a Tarantino disciple.
Then I told another friend to disregard his mom and watch Pulp Fiction. I spread the virus.

In one of the commentary tracks, Brad Pitt mentions he was offered the role of Clarence, but didn't agree with the character. I think he didn't like the fact that his dad got killed as a result of Clarence or something along those lines. Of course, he seemed to kind of regret not taking the role.

Im a huge Tarantino fan but i have be honest and say this film is my least favourite of his. I dont think he was able to put his stamp on the movie as he would have liked to due to the fact that he did not direct the movie himself. He said on one of the commentaries that if he had of made the film himself, he would have moved certain scenes around and would definatly have used an alternate ending.
Im not saying it isnt a good film, i am just saying IMO it would have been even better if Tarantino had total control over everything. I know certain people may not agree but for me QT has never made a bad film yet.

I have to disagree with sigil. Tony Scott did a great job. Reservoir Dogs looks like a student film made by someone with a great future. I believe that Tarantino had to reshoot a bunch of it because it looked so amateurish. True Romance looks like a film made by a professional.
I also think the happy ending is better than the sad ending would have been. Everyone goes through a stage when they proclaim that the world is shit and everyone should just die. Student films are full of death and despair. Most people grow out of that attitude. The story resonates better if Clarance and Alabama go through hell and come out the other side, and then settle down to a simple life.

I guess in the original script it was structured like Tarantino's other flicks, not counting From Dusk 'Til Dawn & Jackie Brown....written as a book with all the sequences of events being out of order. Sounded kind of interesting in the commentary...the example he cited would have been Clarence showing up at his dad's trailer BEFORE we see him take out Drexl, not being completely sure if he was a "good guy" or not. I do agree with the ending they used

I agree that Tony Scott did a good job of the film, but i still think with Tarantino's rawness and passion for movies it may have been a better film. I thought Reservoir dogs considering the ridiculously low budget looked a much more expensive movie than it actually was. I think it was made for around $60,000 in the end with a bit of help financially from Harvey Keitel as producer. But i understand what you are saying about Tony Scott's directing experience and knowledge benefitting True Romance. I guess we will never know now will we!

Here's the funny thing...
I knew who Sonny Chiba was, but never had much interest in his movies (they looked too cheesy - and many of them are, but I digress) - then I watched True Romance.... and developed a mild curiosity about his movies.
15 years later I get a Samurai movie set with Sonny Chiba in each movie (supporting roles all), and I finally get it - he's COOL! He's a BAD ASS! So I recently bought The Sonny Chiba Collection from BCI - and it's GREAT! There are only 3 legit Chiba movies in the set, but it's a great set anyway!
Now I'm hooked - and it's all because Clarence was a Sonny Chiba fan. Well, sort of...

I was 16 when the movie was released. I took these 2 chicks to see it, they had a crush on Slater, and I just wanted to see a bad ass movie. We all walked out satisfied.
