True Romance (1993) -- Appreciation Thread

I just rewatched it and can't help thinking what a gem ths is.

The performances (all of them) were just so mesmerizing. Christian Slater so steely in his confrontations (I wonder where that actor in him went?). Patricia Arquette was so off kilter charming and sweet. And, Gary Oldman so masked in his Drexl character. I mean what little he was in was just so good. Then you have Walken & Hopper, absolute legends, were so subtle and affecting.

But the writing in this by the uncomparable Quentin Tarantino was so original. I love action and this had it all, but the romance between Clarence and 'Bama was so genuine and that opening by Arquette on the billboard was so good.

I love this movie and is it me or is the DTS and even DD 5.1 on the DVD one of the louder and richer still to this day?

Sadly, Hollywood will probably never make such a fine film ever again...

TR is a true cult classic.

Great movie indeed. I always tell people it's better than anything Quentin Tarantino has directed himself. Which is kinda funny considering Tony Scott had wanted to direct Reservoir Dogs but QT really wanted that one so he let him direct True Romance instead.

This film is perfection in my opion and **** star material all the way.

Not one line or scene do I feel should be cut or trimmed down abit. The entire film just captivates me from begining to end. It's amazing and I love every bit of it!

"captivating" is a good word to describe this masterpiece, Julie. i just love everything from the music (the songs and Hans Zimmer's haunting score is one of the most glorious ever. it is no wonder i have the CD soundtrack, some songs on my mp3 player and my cell phone.) to the cameos...it all just works!

My favorite Brad Pitt performance.

By the way, what's the best DVD of this, and how good is it?

I agree with that, TR is one of my favorite movies. Great dialogue, performances, and action.
Although most people I think would choose the Walken/Hopper scene as the best one, I prefer Slater confronting Gary Oldman as Drexl. It's hard to choose, since it has so many unbelievably intense and wonderful scenes.

I'll jump on the bandwagon and give my props for True Romance. One of the most noteworthy blind buys I have ever made.

Eh, it sucks.

Not really. It's one of my favorite movies. But someone had to say it.

It was ok. I just didn't feel the romance really. I guess it was too rushed in the beginning and I didn't really understand Clarence's motivation for killing the pimp.

On the 2 disk DVD there is an extended version of the "billboard scene" between them that I felt should have been included that would (I feel) have remedied that 'lack of connection'.

I'm a pretty big Tarantino fan, and this one was just so-so for me. I bought it blind (DC DVD), and watched it once. It just didn't grab me.

One of my favorites, Kevin Corrigan, has a small role as well.

I recommend flicks to my friends all the time... Some come back happy, some come back bullshit at me that I wasted their 90mins... But True Romance always seems to get thumbs up reaction...

Great flick all around...

actually most of the score is a lift from the Terrence Mallick classic "badlands" (probably intentional, same with the opening naration)

No one ever mentions the elevator scene. I love how much the score ratchets up the tension when Clarence growls "don't fucken lie to me."

One of my all-time favorites, I usually watch it every couple of weeks. A fanboys wet-dream!! John Woo, "fuckin' Charlie Bronson".

Script-wise, probably my favorite Tarantino film.

Don't get me wrong, because I think this was a great movie, but there were a lot of scenes that were basically stolen from other movies. He did a great job of taking the best parts of other movies and using them well in this one, but you had an original story with a lot of scenes that QT probably loved in other movies.

I don't like it that much, and I like other QT helmed or controlled movies.

Agree with the majority.
TR is a great film. The 2 disc SE is one of my top 5 favorite DVDs in my collection, A+ across the board.

I would have loved a little more Val Kilmer though.
The only thing I don't like about it:
Spoiler:
is how easily Clarence and Bama avoided the cops when leaving the hotel at the end. I know there was a lot going on but any self respecting police officer would have at least stopped them to question them

A minor quibble however...

My favorite scene: when Brad Pitt was giving the mobsters directions.

I don't think there's one of us here who hasn't had someone give us those same kind of piss poor directions before.
